"American Prayer" is not one of U2's better-known songs, but after reading the lyrics and grasping what the song is about, it seemed inspiring.
Bono wrote this song as a call to America's churches to do something (ironically, something besides just praying) about the global AIDS crisis. This is the version as performed by Bono, The Edge, Dave Stewart, and Beyonce Knowles
Alright, yeah, wow
This is a tune Beyonce and us have been working on
It's funny how religious people are sometimes the most judgemental
And anyway, this is a song we wrote it's called American Prayer
It could be anything, Irish Prayer, could be African Prayer
It's just a message to the churches that we really need you
To open your door and give sanctuary and break the stigmatization
That goes with being HIV positive
If God loves you, what's the problem?
And this is the time to finish what we started
And this is no time to dream
This is the room
We can turn off the dark tonight
Maybe then we might see
I wanna know the healing of American Prayer
I wanna know the meaning of American Prayer
I want to believe in American Prayer
But I can hear children screaming American Prayer
This is the ground
That keeps our feet from getting wet
And this is the sky over our head
Remember that, what you see depends on where you stand
And how you jump will tell you where you're gonna land
I wanna know the healing of American Prayer
I wanna know the meaning of American Prayer
I want to believe in American Prayer
But I can hear children screaming American Prayer
Hold on, let's not get tired / Hold on, no no no
Don't kick at the darkness
Make the lights brighter
An African Prayer
This is our African Prayer
I wanna know the healing of an African Prayer
I wanna know the meaning of an African Prayer
I want to believe in an African Prayer
But I can hear children screaming African Prayer
As an aside, thanks to d.rex for giving us this assignment. It really moved me. I will certainly be taking this cause to my church.
Composition: The flag quilt and cross were chosen for obvious reasons; the carousel horse represents the millions of children who have lost their lives or had their families shattered by AIDS; the angel represents hope and is placed outside the auxiliary lighting to represent the hope for healing and compassion which is present but unseen.
Fluorescent lights in a basement; no flash used. A hand-held flashlight was used for auxiliary lighting. Post-processing was limited to a crop, Grey World color balance to correct the orange glow created by compact fluorescent bulbs, and a Curves adjustment to darken shadow areas and bring forward some of the highlights.
What I like about the picture: The glow on the cross and the intensity of light on the horse.
What I don't like: Not much, but if you look hard you can see my wife's shoes, which I didn't see when I was arranging the flag quilt.

This American Robin (or "Rouge Gorge" in French) has a nest in the tree on our front lawn.
A couple of weeks ago, I was doing Spring inspection of our lawn and noticed a tiny light blue Robin's egg on the ground so I think it was a fatality of this nest.
Yesterday, I was sitting outside with my camera waiting for birds to come to the tree and suddenly 3 Grackles showed up. The Grackles made a lot of loud noise and were trying to get at this nest in the tree. The pair of nesting Robins rallied and chased away the Grackles successfully.
Today I went looking for the nest, spotted it, and managed to get this shot of one of the adult pair incubating the remaining eggs.
This nest is not very far from the Starling nest in the eaves of my neighbour's house. The Starlings sometime visit this tree, but I've noticed that the Starlings always seem to be chasing away other Starlings who try to get into their own nest.

The American Tobacco Campus is located beside the Durham Bulls Triple-A baseball park, adjacent to the new 2,800-seat performing arts center, and bordered by the highly traveled NC-147. The campus features an on-site YMCA, public green space, biking trails, and five restaurants. American Tobacco is home to some of the most prominent businesses in the region, including the nationally recognized public broadcasting station, WUNC Radio. American Tobacco is a registered historic site with roots in the American Tobacco Factory established in the 1800s.
I spent some time last week fishing and camping in Central Oregon. There were hundreds of these giant birds on the lake in their breeding plumage. The wing span can get to 10 feet and they can reach over 70 inches in length. This shot was taken from my friends boat in the early morning light. It was great to watch them fly just a few inches above the water surface. Really amazing birds. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_white_pelican
American Queen is said to be the largest river steamboat ever built. The ship was built in 1995 and is a six-deck recreation of a classic Mississippi riverboat, built by McDermott Shipyard for the Delta Queen Steamboat Company. Although the American Queen's stern paddlewheel is indeed powered by a steam plant, her secondary propulsion, in case of an emergency and for maneuverability around tight areas where the paddle wheel can not navigate, comes from a set of diesel-electric propellers known as Z-drives on either side of the sternwheel. She has 222 state rooms for a capacity of 436 guests and a crew of 160. She is 418 feet (127 m) long and 89 feet (27 m) wide. (Wikipedia)

The American Robin looks like a big sparrow, about twice the size of a common sparrow. It is a migratory bird, and is currently paying a visit to the San Francisco Bay area. There are lot of them around, and they are quite musical.

Ruth's Career as a Flight Attendant – Happy Highlights –
The time has come for me to say a certain good-bye. I have decided to accept a Voluntary Early Out Program (VEOP) of the world's largest airline – saving another flight attendant from being cut involuntarily due to the corona virus pandemic – since our Company doesn't need 80% of us now. Upon leaving September 27, 2021, once exited, I turn into a retiree with full retirement benefits. So I worked my last trip March 1-4, 2020, not knowing – the Lord knew – it'd be my last, and very good.
My first flight to Germany, when I was a child, took 2 days, on a Constellation propeller aircraft in 1960 transporting military families like ours, hugging coastlines and stopping every so often along the way to refuel. Four years later, ending my father's tour of duty, I flew back to America on a jet airliner.
In working flights from the early 90's into 2020 I encountered unexpected joys, exceptionally difficult people, and potentially deadly situations; however, on 1 flight a passenger came to the jetbridge boarding door I was working on his hands... because he had no legs; he had to walk into the restroom on his hands, then ate his meals with those same hands. I said to myself that I wouldn't complain about anything ever again.
Never did any flight I was working on cancel; however, during one month of 4 transatlantic Frankfurt trips, the flight from the day before on 3 of my 4 return flights cancelled: we carried their relaxed, rested return (deadheading) crew, who had an extra full day in Germany to enjoy doing whatever they wanted to do, back over the ocean, working the totally filled flights while they sat, ate, and slept in passenger seats, 100% full airplane each time! I wished I also could have had an extra day, too, at least once!
In a quarter century I flew Germany about 1,000 times as Speaker (making the airplane announcements in German), usually once, sometimes twice, occasionally 3 times in a week, even worked – assigned as a reserve – 10 transatlantic flights in 15 days, 5 trips back-to-back non-stop; plus worked other international destinations, also 5 years domestic, mostly 3-day but a few 1-, 2-, or 4-day, and 1 prized 5-day trip. I will have accumulated 29½ yrs. seniority from my 20May1992 hire, acquiring lifetime memories, enjoying amazing friendships. This scenic journey down memory lane highlights my working trips of which I have pictures: 1 in 1994; 2 in 2001; 2 in 2010; after buying a smart phone, 252 the next day 11AUG2012 through 04MAR2020. Enjoy this mere 1% of a total of ~70,000 photos and occasional notes on working trips as a crewmember!
I had a real hard time getting a good shot of a male Redstart on my trip. For birds with a black face, you really need the sun to light them up properly to show their face. I ended up getting this shot here in St. Catharines today!

Mack is a 21 year old rescue horse. When he came to me I was told he was a Trakehner and I searched long and hard for a brand of any kind. I couldn't find anything. Fast forward 6 months later, now with some meat on his ribs and a nice coat look what I found!! Mack will have a forever home with us and I think he is fantastic!!

The American goldfinch (Spinus tristis), also known as the eastern goldfinch, is a small North American bird in the finch family. It is migratory, ranging from mid-Alberta to North Carolina during the breeding season, and from just south of the Canadian border to Mexico during the winter.
The only finch in its subfamily to undergo a complete molt, the American goldfinch displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter, while the female is a dull yellow-brown shade which brightens only slightly during the summer. The male displays brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate.

OWS - March Against Spectra Manhattan, NY 12-06-05
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved construction of the NJ-NY Expansion Project, also known as the Spectra Pipeline. The Spectra Pipeline's radon-laced, fracked gas could shorten the lifespan of up to of 30,000 New Yorkers due to lung cancer. There is also risk the pipeline—which would run near parks, a chemical plant, under the Hudson, and emerge near the West Village High Line—could blow-up, just as a pipeline with similar specs exploded in San Bruno, California in 2010.
The Hudson River Park Trust is granting an easement to Spectra Energy for their pipeline to cross state lines and receive sanctuary in the West Village. In order to accommodate Spectra, the Trust will have to change the Hudson River Park Act. More on that here.
Oh yeah, HRPT also wants to amend the act to allow for condo development along the Hudson. As Picture the Homeless has pointed out, there are more vacant homes in NYC than there are homeless. Instead of building more condos for the wealthy and destroying what little green space we have in New York, we need to ensure families have a roofs over their heads and revitalized New York's ecosystems.
OWS Environmental Solidarity will be ratcheting up the fight against the Spectra Pipeline this summer. Thursday's rally kicks off our campaign. On Tuesday we'll be paying FERC a visit:
