Call them flyover states, the sticks, rural, back of beyond, whatever you wish, but places like this are the heartbeat of America. In Wisconsin.
Sports fans in some cities get an extra show during night games: kestrels perching on light standards or foul poles, tracking moths and other insects in the powerful stadium light beams and catching these snacks on the wing. Some of their hunting flights have even made it onto TV sports coverage.
With some of the coldest air in years flooding into the northern United States this week, I've raided my 2015 archives for another remembrance of Spring warmth and beauty. It will surely be a while yet before the first robins and Spring blossoms appear where I live, so until then, images like this one will have to do, I guess. :-)

Flickr friends, after Wednesday, I'll be taking a brief break from Flickr to focus on some tasks that need attention. See you when I return.
I knew this bird for 3 years and it was amazing, I feel tremendously blessed to watch him eat, play and grow in the backyard. This year he didn't return and I miss him so much I want to think that he is happy in other place but I'II never forgive him always in my heart.

American Goldfinch numbers have been increasing recently in my yard but they have ate most of the sunflower seeds so they may go somewhere else. Next year I need to grow more sunflowers. A couple of chickadees were checking for seeds yesterday but not sure they found any. Now that the birds ate all of the seeds from my plants I will feed them a few sunflower seeds occasionally. Yakima County, Washington.

I walked by Beaverton Creek today, and found this tree being hit by both the cedar waxwings and the American robins. Had several opportunities in the colorful surroundings.
Although this photo was taken in August, very few of these American Goldfinches remain. The ones I've seen have rather dull plumage as they are set to migrate soon.

The Sword-billed Hummingbird is a charismatic species from Andean South America. It is found from Venezuela and Colombia in the north to Bolivia in the south. The species belongs to a monotypic genus, Ensifera, and is quite different from all other hummingbirds; metallic green and bronzed overall, with a black bill that is slightly upcurved and longer than the body length. This is the only bird species with a bill length that exceeds the body length. When seen perched, the species usually holds its bill quite upright, presumably because of balance issues stemming from this long and relatively heavy structure.

American Wigeon on the duckweed. They were so shy this early morning, but I did get a squeak or two in sunlight finally.
American Tree Sparrow (Spizelloides arborea) is a hardy northern sparrow with plump body, small bill and long, thin tail. Note rusty cap and rusty (not black) eyeline, gray head and unstreaked grayish breast with dark smudge in center. Small flocks hop on ground, foraging for seeds, giving a soft, musical twitter.

The American robin is a migratory songbird of the true thrush genus and Turdidae, the wider thrush family. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the Old World flycatcher family.
