AMC 2013 Working the L'Esperance Trail

A garbage-filled AMC Gremlin lies dumped on a St. Pete street. A poorly-regarded car during its early/mid-1970s production run, Gremlins have belatedly gained a measure of classic status. Does restoration beckon?

I'd been seeing this little car every morning on my way to work recently, but being 6 in the morning and me driving at about 30mph kind of made it hard for me to snap a picture. Luckily, yesterday I found where it was going everyday - quite by accident.

The internet tells me the Pacer X was originally designed to have a Wankel rotary engine in it, but between the gas crisis and the proposed engine's bad NO emissions AMC had to scrap that idea and shove their standard inline-6 under the hood. One site mentioned something about a 5.0l v8 was an option, but I'm 1) not sure if that was in the Pacer X and 2) not sure how one would get a v8 in there as it looks like the 3.8/4.2 i6 would be a tight fit.

Since AMC had all but folded by the time I was born, the cars are a bit of an oddity to me that I simply don't know much about. I suppose for those born around '98, Saturns will be much the same way.

About the 401st:

The 401st Army field Support Brigade provides Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines, the tools and resources necessary to complete the mission. If they shoot, drive it, fly it, wear it, eat it or communicate with it, the 401st helps provide it. The brigade assists coalition partners with many of their logistical and sustainment needs. The brigade also handles the responsible disposition of equipment in Afghanistan to support evolving missions. We are the single link between Warfighters in the field, and working through Army Sustainment Command, we leverage Army Materiel Command’s worldwide Materiel Enterprise to develop, deliver, and sustain materiel to ensure a dominant joint force for the U.S. and our Allies.

A friend of my mom had an AMC Gremlin in the 70s and got a hold of this button somehow.

As far as little compacts go, the Gremlin and Pacer are among my favorites.
