Some details from the event hall in my hometown, "Freiheitshalle" (Hall of Freedom). The building is clad in amber-colored panels and has a blue roof that can be illuminated at night.

I passed saw her approaching on the sidewalk on Queen Street East in an up and coming Toronto neighborhood known as Leslieville. Not surprisingly, her blue hair peeking out from beneath a beret-type hat and her trendy sunglasses caught my eye. When I stopped her to introduce myself she proved to be approachable and interested in the project so she agreed to my request. Meet Amber.
The sun was rather harsh and the best way to reduce background distractions and soften the light was in the narrow passageway between two residences right next to us. We both noted the strong backlight but I thought I would give it a try anyway. Despite my lens hood, I had to shade my camera further from the glare by extending my left hand up and away from my body until its shadow fell over the camera. It was a bit awkward but it seemed to work. After a few frames, we stepped back onto the sidewalk and began our chat. While talking to Amber, I got the idea to try one more less risky portrait using the steps of the house as the background.
Amber was quite friendly and open. She is 35 and grew up in Barrie, a city ninety minutes north of Toronto. I caught her doing a few errands before work. When she saw her photos without the sunglasses she was concerned that her eyes would appear puffy because of her seasonal allergies. I commiserated because I experience allergies myself but I thought she looked great in the photos.
Amber is a hairdresser by occupation but she also does goldsmithing. When she mentioned hairdresser I nodded and said “Ok, that explains your great hair treatment.” She laughed. I’m hoping she will send me her Facebook link to see some of her jewelry work. Her greatest challenge in life has been twofold: Finding direction and health. She seems to have done well at finding direction, having two occupations which express her artistic side. I told her that many of the people I meet describe the twisting path of their lives and the sequence of accidental events that led them to where they are right now. She laughed and said “I think I know all of those people!” Regarding health, I didn’t want to probe too much but said I hoped she’d gotten on top of her health issues. “These things are usually a life-long issue but I’m ok” was her smiling reply.
Her message to the world is a quote she likes: “If you’re going to walk on thin ice, you might as well be dancing.” I said I liked that and asked if she herself is dancing. She said “Always” with a friendly laugh.
It was time for both of us to move on so we exchanged contact information and Amber wished me luck with my project. Thank you Amber for taking a few minutes to meet a stranger with a camera and take part in my photography project, The Human Family.

Follow-up: I received a very nice email from Amber thanking me for the photos and asking permission to use them on her Facebook which, of course, I happily granted. I have noticed that artists are the ones most likely to think in terms of permission and crediting which is always very considerate.

A woman with a “Don’t tell me to smile” poster holds a serious expression at the end of the march at the Amber Rose Slutwalk in Downtown Los Angeles, California, on Oct. 1, 2017. The Slutwalk, which celebrated women’s sexuality and feminism while condemning rape culture, started with a rally at Hill and First streets and ended with a festival in Pershing Square.
