This is pretty self explanatory. I created the design of text in Illustrator.

April 23 1990 Chicago, national ACT-UP Demonstration - A "die in" in front of the Chicago AMA (American Medical Association) to protest the rising number of deaths from AIDS and demand publicly funded health care. Protestors would "die" and another would draw a chalk outline around their body, as happens in police crime scenes. Sign in the background reads "The Government has Blood on its hands" One AIDS Death Every Half Hour".

Lulu Belliveau protesting lack of health care facilities for women with AIDS in the Chicago Cook County Hospital. Prior to this demonstration, the hospital had no provision for treating women with AIDS. A number of women from several ACT UP chapters occupied the street in front of the Cook County building in Chicago, constructing a temporary "AIDS Ward" for women with mattresses, surrounded by "walls" made of sheets held by other protestors. The successful protest resulted in a policy change for the hospital. ACT UP member Debbie Gould is visible on L wearing glasses speaking to another protestor.

Staff and volunteers help PT Foundation, one of Malaysia's oldest AIDS NGO, to spread the message to the community, including youth at risk of HIV infection.

PT Foundation is working with UNICEF Malaysia and the government to collect data relating to young key HIV-affected populations in Malaysia, including injecting drug users, MSMs, transexuals and sex workers. These efforts will help map out these vulnerable youth communities and inform prevention and protection programs."

April 23 1990 Chicago, national ACT-UP Demonstration

An unidentified woman who had been sitting on a mattress in the street is arrested by a Chicago police officer after refusing to move during a protest regarding the lack of health care facilities for women with AIDS in the Chicago Cook County Hospital. ACT UP often used non violent civil disobedience (and the resulting arrests) to generate press attention to their cause.

The Chicago police, afraid and uneducated about how AIDS is transmitted, normally wore gloves while arresting anyone involved in an ACT UP protestor.

Corizon healthcare providers participated in the “Beyond the Walls: Prison Healthcare and Reentry Summit,” held recently at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The event brought together communities of professionals to focus on the crisis of HIV within the criminal justice system and the work being done to “improve conditions inside the prison walls and in the communities to which prisoners are returning.”

Members of Corizon Health staff in Philadelphia presented at the summit, including Regional Vice President Vandelyn Phillips, Regional Infection Control Director Sharon Bunting, Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Debra D’Aquilante and Director of Nursing Monica DeVito. In the presentation, “Planning for Successful Transition in the Community: PREA Implications for the LGBTQ Community,” the “dark side” of the victimization of the LGBTQ population behind bars was brought to light, using Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards of identifying those at greatest risk for victimization and defining measures to protect those people from harm while incarcerated.

The summit was held on June 15. June is nationally recognized as AIDS Education Month (AEM). We are grateful to our dedicated providers for participating in the “Beyond the Walls” summit and working to spread awareness and information about HIV/AIDS, a disease that affects over one million people in the United States.

“Your Life, Your Canvas”. That’s the theme for the event. Join us as we say it with art and music this World AIDS Day! We are all responsible for painting the canvas of our lives. What we choose to put on that canvas is entirely up to us, and the choices we make contribute to a constantly evolving picture. At this event, you can assert your individual choices and enjoy one another’s company.

With an exciting line-up of performances by popular local bands, graffiti art, rap and games, you can expect a blast of a time with us. Not it's not just about fun and games, but we will gather for a cause this World AIDS Day; to raise awareness about the disease, reduce stigma associated with it and arm ourselves with information to make informed choices.

The event will kick off with a graffiti art showcase on a massive white canvas by renowned graffiti artist Killer Gerbil together with Jack & Rai and local bloggers. You too can add your touch to the canvas and contribute to the evolving picture.

Throughout the evening, you can expect great music with live performances by popular local bands such as Electrico, Jack & Rai and Fire Fight (pictured below). Sleeq, the Hip Hop and R&B duo will be performing at the event as well!

A special music video of Jack & Rai’s “Pixelated”, a song dedicated to World AIDS Day 2009, will ‘premiere’ at "Your Life. Your Canvas". The popular pop-rock duo will also perform a special version of “Pixelated”!

April 23 1990 Chicago, national ACT-UP Demonstration

During a "die in" by ACT UP protestors, a small group dressed as doctors staged a small "play" about the blood money being taken by what the protestors described as AIDS profiteers - large drug companies and insurance companies who refused to pay for certain AIDS treatments, or cut off the policies of people who were diagnosed as HIV positive or with AIDS.

The study discovered that those who reported continuously using condoms stopped 70% of HIV infections. But those who reported only “occasionally” using condoms, protect themselves just only 8% of HIV infections. This data shows that condoms are useful against HIV transmission under laboratory conditions.
