This boy was eating alone because the other children in his Bangkok AIDS orphans' group had no appetite. For dozens of other children, steaming bowels of rice and chicken went cold. A byproduct of the virus. While I shot the boy here never acknowledged me. He'd glance at me, then return to eating. The following is a true story from my interactions with the Catholic priest who runs this orphanage/hospice/preschool:

Excerpted from Chapter 5:

Catholics typically bury their dead, Buddhists cremate. That's how the slum priest who ran the orphanage/AIDS hospice knew what he told me next. Something he assumed I already knew and something I felt sorry for him already knowing.

"Kids' bones burn up to almost nothing. With a kid there just isn't much left over after cremation. Their bones aren't real dense, they're not fully developed …"

He rubbed his forefinger and thumb together like he was feeling very fine granules.

"…There's just not a lot of ash. Not much to scatter."

They try to anyhow, just flecks to the wind outside the Buddhist temple down by the slum bridge, into the dung brown canal that flows into the river that flows into the ocean. Idea being that all water pure and polluted flows toward the sea, metaphor for life and death and the oneness of all. Rich, poor, saint, sinner, Buddhist, Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Jew, agnostic, you, me. One big body of water.

The owner of these hearing aids was in Birmingham city centre on the night of the pub bombings in 1974, which were attributed to the IRA. One of the bombs exploded in The Tavern in the Town, near where she was sitting.

I get by with a little help from my friends. Huh! Oh, let me put them back in.

My recently acquired hearing aids, about a month now. The only problem with them is that now I hear things I didn't want to before.

Only David Nelson and his creative team could make a casual-chic affaire go glam without a tie. The eleventh annual No Tie Dinner & Dessert Party for AIDS Services of Dallas, presented by Purple Foundation, went Bond-chic at The Frontiers of Flight Museum on April 9 with the theme You Only Live Twice to celebrate the non-profit’s long history of providing a second chance at life for its residents. The event raised over $150,000 and is still collecting donations. No Tie Chair David Nelson and Honorary Chairs Angel and Marie Reyes greeted the 1,500 guests who indulged in lavish cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies, chocolates and pies from some of the city’s finest eateries, such as Apples and Onions, Dallas Affaires Cake Co, Daisy Cakes, Uncle Willie’s Pies, and Frosted Art Bakery & Studio, among many others, and the signature Reyka Double Bond cocktail proved popular at the bars. Upon arrival, one might have caught a glimpse of the stunning Deanna Cahill poised on top of a cupcake platform dressed in her Bond-girl finest of all black leather. She and husband Rob Cahill and Alika Ray produced a surprise dance performance by the Dallas Cowboy R&B dance team set to Madonna’s Die Another Day. Another surprise was the announcement of Carol Hatton as the recipient of the Sheila Dolezal Humanitarian Award for her volunteerism and community support and the newly-retired Dennis Kershner as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for his long-term support as ASD Chairman of the Board for seven years and No Tie Chair for ten years. Attendees included: ASD President/CEO Don Maison, ASD Chairman of the Board Don Neubauer, Purple Foundation’s Blake Baker, Chris Huffstutler, Sara Fangmeyer and Dylan Orrell, Sterling Deason O’Donnell, Patricia Deason, Tricia Sims, Merlene Phillips, and Tony Fielding, among others. The mission of AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD) is to create and strengthen healthy communities through the delivery of quality, affordable, service-enriched housing for individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS who are economically disadvantaged and to coordinate a broad range of direct services and programs. ASD’s mission includes advocacy, education, and the development of affordable housing options and community development opportunities, both for its residents living with HIV/AIDS, and for economically disadvantaged people. 1981 - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS, is first identified in Los Angeles, in the US.

In this picture, a colored transmission electron micrograph image captures the HIV virus budding from the surface of a T-lymphocyte white blood cell. The virus particles attack T-lymphocytes, stealing their genetic machinery, thereby forcing them to produce more copies of the virus. The new virus particles then erupt from the cell to infect other T-lymphocytes. As these are a vital part of the immune system, the disease severely weakens immunity, making victims susceptible to seemingly harmless infections.
