One section of the wonderful AIDS Memorial sculpture downtown

St. Vincent's Triangle, West 12th Street, New York City [HDR]; origin of previous b&w "angles" picture.

This work marked a pivotal moment in the group’s practice: their engagement with the HIV/AIDS crisis at a time when the illness was a taboo subject and highly stigmatized. The painting appropriates American Pop and artist Robert Indiana’s LOVE motif (1964), substituting L-O-V-E with A-I-D-S. Produced for a fundraiser at Koury Wingate Gallery in New York, it was a the first of many AIDS works to follow.

AIDS oh AIDS,

The mention of your name, scares me out the darkness.

You crept in and swept our continent.

From North to South and from East to West

Thousands and thousands you've killed,

Spoiled the beauty of our continent curse no meaning to life

Yet you are no sacrifice.

AIDS do you have Mercy?

AIDS, oh AIDS,

You are a deadly monster,

you've taken our fathers, mothers,

brothers and sisters, homes left full of grace,

why?

Just because of Mr. Slim.

Others call me Mr. Kill me quick,

Scientists have gone to the moon,

made nuclear weapons,

yet you are no sacrifice.

AIDS, do you have mercy?

Dear brothers and sisters,

Friends and relatives,

Sons and daughters

And my loving parents,

Lend me your ears

And get this message right,

With your broken heart I am asking you,

Please take care of the youth,

Stop bad habits, be faithful to each other.

This monster never sleeps, there is no cure

For AIDS, oh AIDS, do you have mercy?

This installation deliberately engulfs us: its high-contrast graphics seem to move before our eyes, producing a dizzying field of colours. Steering away from their classic palette of red, blue and green, General Idea experimented with alternate colour combinations in these three paintings. The canvasses are installed over the group’s AIDS Wallpaper – a work whose repetitive pattern references the replication of the HIV virus.

Thank you so much to everyone who sent a block...and to many of you who sent multiple blocks!

The AIDS Memorial in Barbara Hall Park is a tribute to people from our local community who have died of an AIDS-related illness. The Memorial counters the silence, denial, isolation and rejection that are often connected with AIDS. This is a place to grieve those who are gone, to celebrate their lives and courage, and to take pride in our response to AIDS.

E, a quanto pare, l’informazione scarseggia.

Both these kids have AIDS. The little one can't walk because he's so weak. His elder brother carries him. When I met this family, their father was at end stage, receiving palliative care. He has to be lifted by his wife, who is also sick. They are desperately poor and cannot afford medicine, instead relying on outreach programs. They're all going to die, condemned by a vicious disease.

Yet another conceptual try.

Evidently, the red towel explains the symbolic red ribbon of the Aids awareness ribbon. With a dimly lit face, it represents a stranger , what lies within will never show and one should never practice promiscuity.

Be faithful to your spouse, keep yourself safe, keep others likewise. Practice safe sex and prevent the spread of Aids/HIV.
