Addressed to: Mrs. Adie / Millington Road / Cambridge / England

Message on postcard reads: Dear Gran (Granville), Please forgive a P.C. (postcard) it is late & I'm dog tired. If Mother hasn't committed herself to the bedstand please ask her not to, (but) if she has, don't please tell her but I have 6 or 8 of the same from the Hotel. Besides which I suppose she would get an iron one & freight is $3.60 a ????. Will you tell her that I shall have to miss them this week. How I am going to get through at all, goodness knows. All goes well, I hope with you to. With best love - I have been writing her at 6 Claremont. Has she got the letters, I wonder! Bob.

- the mother - Clementina (nee Hellaby) Adia - she was born in Brudenell Place, Hoxton on - 17 Jan 1837 to Richard Hellaby and Mary Clementina Paqualin. Clementina Hellaby married Patrick Adie and had 8 children. She passed away on - 5 Nov 1930 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.

- the father - PATRICK ADIE was the youngest son of the late Alexander James Adie, F.R.S.E., optician of Edinburgh, and brother of the late Engineer of the Edinburgh and Glasgow and other railways. He was born in 1821, and was educated at the High School of Edinburgh. On leaving he went to the workshops of Milne and Son, gas engineers, in that city, where he gained his first mechanical experience. The next four years were spent in his father’s workshop in Edinburgh, with the exception of six months, which he passed in Sir Thomas Macdougall Brisbane’s observatory, near Kelso, where he gained valuable information, and made the acquaintance of the late Mr. John Welsh, subsequently Superintendent of the Kew Observatory. About 1847 he came to London, and a few years afterwards set up in business as an optician and surveying-instrument maker, which business he continued till the time of his death. He designed and supplied many of the instruments used by the engineers engaged in the great trigonometrical survey of India, and also in the construction of many railways, both in this country and abroad. He gained medals at the Exhibitions of 1851 (London), 1855 (Paris), 1862 (London), &C., for excellence of these instruments. For meteorological instruments his reputation was fully sustained, many certificates being received from Kew Observatory, showing that they were without error. That Mr. Adie possessed great inventive power is shown by the fact that he took out no less than twelve patents, many of which are well known, and have proved very successful. One of these patents he was engaged in perfecting at the time of his death. It consists in the employment of corrugated steel belting, in lieu of leather, which he believed would effect a large saving both in power and cost. In this opinion he was supported by some eminent Members of the Institution, to whom he was well known, and who frequently sought the advice which his great experience enabled him to give. During the last ten years of his life he had suffered from bronchitis and heart disease. He died suddenly on the 18th of May, 1886.

Just where a cloud above the mountain rears

An edge all flame, the broadening sun appears;

A long blue bar its aegis orb divides,

And breaks the spreading of its golden tides;

And now that orb has touched the purple steep

Whose softened image penetrates the deep.

Leaving Cape Town our trip took us through the most glorious rape fields and, seduced by their colour, I climbed into them over the puddles of recent rain and revelled in their generosity. Drunk as a bee glutted with pollen I hurried back to the car in triumph. When I downloaded these images at home I learnt a salutary lesson - if you don't compose your picture with some sort of graphic element of focal point all you get is a swathe of meaningless yellow and there will be no honey. This is not the most yellow of them but it is almost okay.

From Franzensring to Universitätsring

The Ephrussi family name is relatively unknown in Vienna.

The Palais Ephrussi, so the building at the ring road, however, many Viennese is familiar, was there but housed the administration of Casinos Austria from 1969 to 2009 housed. The company inscription 'decorates' still the facade.

Today, the property is home of a law firm, led by the President of the Bar Association Gerhard Benn-Ibler.

Students across the university is probably more known McDonald, who has rented the ground floor of the adjacent house.

At that time the palace was at Franzensring. It began at the Parliament and reached to the university. In 1934 one part of it was renamed in Dr. Karl Lueger-Ring. This remained so until 2012. Now it's called University Ring.

The other part even had a more eventfull naming:

1934 Dr. Ignaz Seipel-Ring

1940 Josef Bürckel-Ring

1945 Dr. Ignaz Seipel-Ring

1949 Parliament-Ring

1956 Dr. Karl Renner Ring

Palais Ephrussi, opposite the University

Progenitor Ephrussi - Sephardic Greek from Russia

Ephrussi sounds strange and a bit exotic. One does not really know how to write the word, if you have not seen it before. Hardly anyone suspects that the ancestor of the dynasty, Charles Joachim (1792 - 1864), from Odessa in Russia was - and yet less that this was a Sephardic Greek.

He built a business empire, beginning with grain exports from Ukraine, then investing in the construction of infrastructure: bridges, railways, port facilities. And this, of course, also included the establishment of a bank - with offices in Paris and Vienna.

Son Ignaz has built the palace

Son Ignaz (1829 - 1899) took over in 1860 the financial transactions in Vienna, his brother Leonid (1826 - 1878) went to Paris and became 'Leon'

As the progenitor Charles died, he was laid to rest in the family vault Ephrussi at the Central Cemetery, not far from the gate 1

(There were later also Ignaz and his wife Emilie, born Porges 1836-1900, buried.)

Ephrussi family vault at the Central Cemetery, Gate 1

Son Ignaz was now head of the Viennese house and reputable in society. He was knighted by the emperor, bestowed him in 1871 with the Order of the Iron Crown, Third Class - although Ignaz throughout his life remained Russian citizen.

Economically he experienced a further upswing, founded more stores, also in London. It is said that the Ephrussi were the second richest banking family after the Rothschilds.

Therefore Ignaz could afford it to take on one of the most successful Ringstrasse architects, Theophil Hansen, 1869 for the construction of his palace. This one had a year earlier started with the construction of the Palais Epstein.

Apart from that Hansen had by his Athens stays good contacts with the Greek society of Vienna and came so to orders such as the Palais Sina am Hohen Markt or the Greek Orthodox Church at the meat market (Fleischmarkt).

Hansen Memorial, Parliament (detail)

Netsuke figurines come in the family

Around the time of the Palais building acquired Ignaz' extremely art-loving cousin Charles (1849 - 1905), who could afford to live as a bohemian and did not have to work, a collection of small carved Japanese figures, netsuke. Those were used in the attachment of kimono belts and were made of ivory, jade or horn.

As heritage (Note: according to other sources, as a gift ) within the family this exotic extravaganza came to Vienna's Palais, where Ignaz resided with family.

Son Victor is arrested by Nazis

In the family Ephrussi it came again to an alteration of generations: Viktor (1860-1945) took over the house. He was with Emilie, called 'Emmy', a born Schey, married.

The marriage was not happy, allegedly, in a manner of speaking the bride was in love with another man. Nevertheless, rapidly three children were born, almost 20 years later, another son - the father was at this time, however, almost certainly Emmys lover (but it was not talked about it).

The family survived reasonably sound an safe to the end of the monarchy, the first World War and the interwar period. But in 1938 came the Nazis, arrested the nearly 80-year-old Viktor in his palace and looted his valuables .

Viktor von Ephrussi

Against the Gestapo violence there were no means, only stratagems: Viktor's maid Anna scurried over and over again among the henchmen.

She succeeded every time to hide some of the small netsuke figurines under her apron, which she then hid in her room.

And she did not say a word to any of them. Not even the stately family.

Viktor was arrested, interrogated in the Hotel Metropol at Morzinplatz and forced to renounce all of his possessions in order to obtain an exit permit.

For his wife Emmy finally all of this became too much. She swallowed an increased dose of heart medications and died.

The Hotel Metropol as an interrogation center

The hare with amber eyes

Viktor was able to flee to England, where he died shortly before the end of the war. His daughter Elizabeth married into the Dutch family de Waal.

She returned in 1945 after the war to Vienna. In the meantime offices of the U. S. Army had moved Into the palais. Vienna should now remain occupied for ten years. Some of the old furnitures were still there. And Anna, the maid.

She handed out Elizabeth the netsuke figures which she could hide then. 264 by the number. A courageous woman. And no one knows her last name. Nobody has asked her for it.

Elizabeth's grandson Edmund has written the story of six generations in the book 'The Hare with the Amber Eyes'. A bestseller: sold 200 000 times.

The Bestseller

Netsuke Figures (Bid: Asian shop Bräunerstraße)

The war-damaged palace was in 1950 returned to the family. Meanwhile impoverished, it had to sell it for only $ 30 000. Were deferred only a few tapestries and books. For the compulsory expropriation of the bank a compensation of $ 5,000 was paid out - with the commitment that they would make no further claims .

As the palace changed hands in 2009, a sum of about 30 million euros has been rumored.

A small but fine Heinrichshof

The Palais Ephrussi extends on the ring road side over nine window axes, on the Schottengasse eight window axes.

The building is a scaled down version of the Heinrichshof which Hansen 1861-63 had built for the brick Baron Heinrich Drasche opposite the Court Opera (destroyed in 1945).

Heinrichshof, 1863

Palais Ephrussi on the left, then the Förstersche group

Theophil Hansen renounced of an accentuation of the center in favor of monumental tower-like corner projections giving the impression that the building stands free. The corner risalit was a characteristic of the baroque palace architecture (example: Schloss Belvedere). It was Hansen's innovative idea to incorporate this motif into the housing. In the business office at the corner of Schottengasse moved in the large, as well furnished by Hansen Café Hembsch.

University (left), Förstersche group (middle), Café Landtmann (right)

Hansen worked very closely with the architects of the adjacent building groups, which also had familial backgrounds: He was with Sophie, sister of Emil Foerster (1838 -1909) married. The brother took over the design on the ring road side, Carl Tietz on the back side at the Palais Lieben. In the literature, this complex of buildings of aesthetic and formal unity went down in history as the 'Förstersche group'.

Unfortunately, the part of the building complex (No. 10, to Mölkerbastei) was severely damaged by bombing in World War II and replaced by a new building.

Left Palais Lieben (8 window axes), right Palais Ephrussi (8 window axes)

One is inclined to attribute the Palais Ephrussi the entire complex. But on the side Schottengasse it includes only the first eight window axes.

If you look closely you can clearly see this on the basis of the color difference of the facade and the gilded, or not gilded balcony lattices.

Ephrussis' immediate neighbors were at the corner Schottengasse/Mölkerbastei the Lieben family, on the ring road side the Iron Baron Mayr-Melnhof (No. 12), No. 10 owned Theresa Blum (destroyed in 1945).

Corner Mölkerbastei/Schottengasse

Piano nobile in inconspicuous 1st floor

Italian flair with plenty of balconies

University Ring (above), Schottengasse (right)

The palace is through ledges horizontally divided into three zones ( base, 'piano nobile', Attica), nevertheless dominates the vertical order: pilasters embrace the second and third floor and the optical impression is further extended by the Terrakottakaryatiden (Terracotta caryatides) that carry the woodwork.

The entire attic floor lies something set back and is circumscribed by a gilded tendrils grid (the thus created balcony room provides surely a nice residential feeling, moreover, perhaps with a view to the Vienna Woods.)

The color scheme of the facade is particularly eye-catching and gives an Italian flair: red brick color with yellow stucco.

Hansen accentuates with the Palais Ephrussi in the first floor the main entrance and the sides with columns, wearing balconies. The shape of the balusters will be taken up later in the opposite University.

The lower floors were rusticated in the neo-Renaissance style, the appear massive and simple.

On the first floor, above the balcony, were the apartment of the landlord and the representative rooms - and not, as one might suspect, a floor above.

Floor plan main floor

Ignaz Ritter von Ephrussi expressly wished from the architect to his main floor a separate staircase, which must not beeing used by any other house party. For the tenants were to build three floors with a convenient main and kitchen stair. On the ground floor a stable for four horses was provided. There are two basement levels.

For the interior design none other than Christian Griepenkerl was taken that equipped the main floor with painting cycles.

Later this one will Adolf Hitler refuse admission to the Academy of Arts because of "insufficient sample drawings".

The ceiling paintings in the Palais show Greek Zeus adventures and Jewish themes (images from the Book of Esther). In other respects, too, it was made sure that nothing was lacking: precious wood floors, expensive fireplaces, elegant marble - and a lot of gold. Inside and outside.

In sunlight, the balcony lattices shine far into the distance. No other Ringstraßenpalais (ring road palais) afforded this beauty .

Location - history from Schottentor

View before 1900 with still intact Gehtor (walking gate) of the Schottentor (gate).

Tor - Tower - Residential House

In the Middle Ages the Babenberg Jasomirgott took Irish-Scottish monks to Vienna. They founded on the ancient Roman road (traffic artery) leading to the west a convent and a school. The name Schottenviertel became customary.

The Schottentor was a part of the fortification. Mentioned it is for the first time in 1276, from 1291 on it was called the Schottenburgtor (Scottish castle gate), later only Schottentor.

The above the gate situated tower was extended in 1418, 1716 were converted into a house gate and tower, which belonged 1775-95 to the couple Eva and Anton Prohaska and 1812 to Protomedicus Edward Guldner von Lobes.

1839 has been demolished.

Old Schottentor Schottenkloster (monastery) 1683

Already in 1656 had been built a new (outer) gate in front of the old Schottentor. 1840 it was replaced by a neoclassical building, similar to the exterior castle gate.

However, as so inconvenient The five passages at Schottentor proved that the new gate soon, " the 5 follies " was the nickname . Supposedly, have been held to narrow the driving gates. And for pedestrians , it was a zig- zag course .

The new Schottentor was already 20 years after its establishment , in 1862 , demolished, only a Gehtor has been preserved until 1900. Then they demolished the remaining groups together with four houses of Mölkerbastei .

The term Schottentor found today on any street sign, only the metro station at the University bears the name - much to the chagrin of some Vienna tourists from the next station - can be misleading - Scots ring.

After the 2nd World War I circulated the following joke in Vienna: A visitor from the provinces asks in a Viennese tram :

" What is the name of the place over there? " "That is the Town Hall Square , formerly Adolf- Hitler-Platz . " A little further asks the visitors again :

" And what is there in the building? " "This is the Parliament , formerly County House . " Again, the tram runs a piece .

" And what is this place?" "This is the Stalin Square , formerly Schwarzenberg Platz . " The visitor gets out and says goodbye with the words:

"Goodbye , formerly Heil Hitler . "

- please ignore the two postage due stamps (not tied) as they were most likely added a later time to increase the value of the cover... (I purchased the cover for the RARE strike of the "6th Division / Passed By Censor" handstamp).

The designation, 6th DIVISION, may be explained by the fact that in 1913 (1914 in another reference) Canada was divided for military purposes into 6 Divisional Areas and 3 Military Districts. Reference "The Militia List-Dominion of Canada, page 141". D.A.6 comprised the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island with headquarters at Halifax. Early in 1916 the 6 Divisional Area titles were dropped in favour of Military Districts with the same 3 provinces making up M.D.6 and H.Q. at Halifax. In November 1917 New Brunswick became M.D.7 with H.Q. at St. John. LINK - bnaps.org/hhl/newsletters/mm/mm-1982-01-n047.pdf

Here are some random excerpts from various references which add a little colour to the story:

In February 1915 Otter (Maj-Gen) travelled to Halifax where about 80 prisoners were confined in the Citadel.

More than 800 Germans (by British request) were transferred from Newfoundland and the West Indies to Canada. An abandoned factory building in Amherst N.S. was rented. Some of these prisoners had been in the war in Europe, and at sea, and were somewhat dangerous. The Officers were removed to the Citadel at Halifax.

By the end of 1916 the German officers at the Citadel were returned to Amherst (Likely by 1 October as internment operations at the Citadel ceased 3 October, 1916),

Only in 1919, July 24, could the first large shipment of prisoners, mostly German sailors from Amherst, sail from Quebec for Rotterdam.

The Amherst internment facilities were closed 27 September, 1919. LINK - bnaps.org/hhl/newsletters/mm/mm-1982-01-n047.pdf

A cartoon of 1922 provides a social vignette of a century ago. US streetcar ridership reached a peak in the years immediately after World War I, only to plummet during the course of the 1920s in the face of skyrocketing car ownership.

Odd ball. This ornamental orb at an apartment complex in Miami South Beach holds a not-so-apparent feature: the text of the Gettysburg Address. Wikipedia says this: "The Gettysburg Address is a speech that U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered during the American Civil War at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of November 19, 1863, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. It is one of the best-known speeches in American history."

Clipped from - The Province Vancouver newspaper, British Columbia, Canada - 19 January 1901 - COUTLEE COAL. Fortune Disposed to Smile at Upon Mr. Gilbert Blair. Last Coal was discovered a few months ago on the farm at Coutlee, of Gilbert Blair, of the firm of Mackay, Smith & Co., of this city. The matter, however, was kept quiet until some depth was obtained and the property proved up. Mr. Blair has now returned from Coutlee where he went to direct operations, and states that he has had conderable work done on the property, and there is no doubt about there being a big deposit of good soft coal on his farm. Mr. Blair, when he came to this country twenty years ago, squatted on his Coutlee farm, but hard times came upon him. He would have sold his farm for a mere song, but no one would buy it, and he hung on. Today he thinks he could easily sell out his row acres for a large sum, if he desired, owing to the coal discovery. Coutlee is 40 miles from Spences Bridge and is on the line of the surveyed Nicola valley railway from Midway to Spences Bridge.

This magnificent building has 63 stories and stands over 300 meters high.

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke to MEPs about the continuing crackdown on dissenting voices in Belarus and called on the EU to take firm action against the regime.

“The Belarusian regime has shown itself willing to seize individuals from international flights, misuse international agencies to punish dissidents, to punish migrants in a way deliberately designed to undermine the stability and security of Europe," said Tsikhanouskaya during her speech in the Parliament on 24 November.

The Belarusian opposition leader called on the EU to help address the ongoing crisis with migrants on the EU-Belarus borders: “Both Belarussians and migrants are now hostages of the regime and these two problems cannot be solved separately.”

She said the EU should coordinate sanctions against the regime with the US and the UK to make the sanctions “effective and not only symbolic”.

A coat hanger that has been in my closet for years. I have no memory of ever being in this store and so I am sure that this hanger goes back a long time, probably from a relative who bought an article of clothing there. I like the information and address stenciled on the wood. A nice old touch. Maybe someone from the Flickr Bronx contingent knew or visited this store. It probably dates from the 30's or 40's

Safavid Leather Address Book

I was given this beautiful new address book with leather filigree to go with my new house.

It is an amazing piece of workmanship and I will treasure it greatly. Cobalt blue features heavily in Persian art and architecture.

I have promised myself to write neatly in this book. My hand writing has deteriorated badly since the advent of computers and every entry will be made using an old fountain pen to make me write slowly and carefully.

"Book Art From a Golden Age"

"Amid the many jewels of ancient Islam, decorative book binding shines particularly bright. Symmetry and refinement of line are the hallmarks of these bindings, ranging in style over many centuries from the simply tooled geometric patterns of the 14th century to the complex compositions of the 16th century.

Associated with the Islamic Golden Age, the Persian Safavid-style designs represented a high point for the art of the book. These bindings feature centralized designs of medallions, quadrants, plant and animal motifs, a pentagonal envelope flap closure and elaborately decorated doublures (interior covers), exquisite creations in cut-out leather, coloured papers and gilding.

This doublure inspired collection portrays a remarkable leather filigree pattern incorporating handtooled surfaces and motives which retain an elegance and style even in our modern context."

The Reich Chancellery (German: Reichskanzlei) was the traditional name of the office of the Chancellor of Germany (then called Reichskanzler) in the period of the German Reich from 1871 to 1945. The Chancellery's seat from 1875 was the former city palace of Prince Antoni Radziwiłł (1775–1833) on Wilhelmstraße in Berlin. Both the palace and a new Reich Chancellery building (completed in early 1939) were seriously damaged during World War II and subsequently demolished.

Today the office of the German chancellor is usually called Kanzleramt (Chancellor's Office), or more formally Bundeskanzleramt (Federal Chancellor's Office). The latter is also the name of the new seat of the Chancellor's Office, completed in 2001.

Old Reich Chancellery

When the military alliance of the North German Confederation was reorganised as a federal state with effect from July 1, 1867, the office of a Federal Chancellor (Bundeskanzler) was implemented at Berlin and staffed with the Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck. After the unification of Germany on January 18, 1871 by accession of the South German states, Bismarck became Reich Chancellor of the new German Empire.

In 1869 the Prussian state government had acquired the Rococo city palace of late Prince Radziwiłł on Wilhelmstraße No. 77 (former "Palais Schulenburg"), which from 1875 was refurbished as the official building of the Chancellery. It was inaugurated with the meetings of the Berlin Congress in July 1878, followed by the Congo Conference in 1884.

1930 extension, view from Wilhelmplatz

In the days of the Weimar Republic the Chancellery was significantly enlarged by the construction of a Modern southern annex finished in 1930. In 1932/33, while his nearby office on Wilhelmstraße No. 73 was renovated, the building also served as the residence of Reich President Paul von Hindenburg, where he appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor on 30 January 1933. The Hitler Cabinet held few meetings here. In 1935 the architects Paul Troost and Leonhard Gall redesigned the interior as Hitler's domicile. They also added a large reception hall/ballroom and conservatory, officially known as the Festsaal mit Wintergarten in the garden area. The latter addition was unique because of the large cellar that led a further one-and-a-half meters down to an air-raid shelter known as the Vorbunker.[1] Once completed in 1936, it was officially called the "Reich Chancellery Air-Raid Shelter" until 1943, with the construction to expand the bunker complex with the addition of the Führerbunker, located one level below.[2] The two bunkers were connected by a stairway set at right angles which could be closed off from each other.[3]

Devastated by air raids and the Battle of Berlin, the ruins of the Old Reich Chancellery were not cleared until 1950.

New Reich Chancellery

In late January 1938, Adolf Hitler officially assigned his favourite architect Albert Speer to build the New Reich Chancellery around the corner on Voßstraße, a western branch-off of Wilhelmstraße, requesting that the building be completed within a year. Hitler commented that Bismarck's Old Chancellery was "fit for a soap company" but not suitable as headquarters of a Greater German Reich. It nevertheless remained his official residence with its recently refurbished representation rooms on the ground floor and private rooms on the upper floor where Hitler lived in the so-called Führerwohnung ("Leader apartment"). Old and New Chancellery shared the large garden area with the underground Führerbunker, where Hitler committed suicide at the end of April 1945.

Speer claimed in his autobiography that he completed the task of clearing the site, designing, constructing, and furnishing the building in less than a year. In fact, preliminary planning and versions of the designs were already being worked on as early as 1935. To clear the space for the New Reich Chancellery, the buildings on the northern side of Voßstraße No. 2–10 had already been demolished in 1937.

Hitler placed the entire northern side of the Voßstraße at Speer's disposal assigning him the work of creating grand halls and salons which "will make an impression on people". Speer was given a blank cheque — Hitler stated that the cost of the project was immaterial — and was instructed that the building be of solid construction and that it be finished by the following January in time for the next New Year diplomatic reception to be held in the new building.

Over 4,000 workers toiled in shifts, so the work could be accomplished round-the-clock. The immense construction was "finished" 48 hours ahead of schedule, and the project earned Speer a reputation as a good organiser, which, combined with Hitler's fondness for Speer played a part in the architect becoming Armaments Minister and a director of forced labour during the war. Speer recalls that the whole work force — masons, carpenters, plumbers, etc. were invited to inspect the finished building. Hitler then addressed the workers in the Sportpalast. However, interior fittings were not finished until the early 1940s.

In the end it cost over 90 million Reichsmarks, well over one billion dollars today, and hosted the various ministries of the Reich.[4]

In his memoirs, Speer described the impression of the Reichskanzlei on a visitor:

“ From Wilhelmsplatz an arriving diplomat drove through great gates into a court of honour. By way of an outside staircase he first entered a medium-sized reception room from which double doors almost seventeen feet high opened into a large hall clad in mosaic. He then ascended several steps, passed through a round room with domed ceiling, and saw before him a gallery 480 feet (150 m) long. Hitler was particularly impressed by my gallery because it was twice as long as the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.

Hitler was delighted: "On the long walk from the entrance to the reception hall they'll get a taste of the power and grandeur of the German Reich!" During the next several months he asked to see the plans again and again but interfered remarkably little in this building, even though it was designed for him personally. He let me work freely.

The series of rooms comprising the approach to Hitler's reception gallery were decorated with a rich variety of materials and colours and totalled 220 m (725 ft) in length. The gallery itself was 145 m (480 ft) long. Hitler's own office was 400 square meters in size. From the outside, the chancellery had a stern, authoritarian appearance. From the Wilhelmplatz, guests would enter the Chancellery through the Court of Honour (Ehrenhof). The building's main entrance was flanked by two bronze statues by sculptor Arno Breker: "Wehrmacht" and "Partei" ("Armed Forces" and "Party"). Hitler is said to have been greatly impressed by the building and was uncharacteristically free in his praise for Speer, lauding the architect as a "genius". The chancellor's great study was a particular favourite of the dictator. The big marble-topped table served as an important part of the Nazi leader's military headquarters, the study being used for military conferences from 1944 on. On the other hand, the Cabinet room was never used for its intended purpose.

The New Reich Chancellery suffered severe damage during the Battle of Berlin between April to May of 1945 (in comparison, the Old Reich Chancellery was not as badly destroyed). Andrei Gromyko, who would later become the Soviet foreign minister, visited the partially-destroyed grand structure a few weeks after the fighting in the city had completely ceased. He recalls, "We reached it not without difficulties. Ruined edifices, formless heaps of metal and ferro-concrete encumbered the way. To the very entrance of the Chancellery, the car could not approach. We had to reach it on foot…. He noted the New Reich Chancellery "...was almost destroyed". "Only the walls remained, riddled by countless shrapnel, yawning by big shot-holes from shells. Ceilings survived only partly. Windows loomed black by emptiness."

The last stage of defense by defending German troops took place inside the Reich Chancellery, as mentioned by Gromyko, who stated the following:

Doors, windows and chandeliers testified on them the big imprint of the battle, most of them being broken. The lowest floors of the Reich Chancellery represented chaos. Obviously, the garrison of the Citadel fiercely resisted here... All around lie heaps of crossbeams and overhead covers, both metal and wood and huge pieces of ferro-concrete. On both sides of a narrow corridor, there were certain disposed cells, all eroded by explosions… All this produced a grim and distressing impression. If photography of this underground citadel of Hitler existed, they would become a proper illustration to Dante’s Hell; just select which circle.[5]

After World War II in Europe ended, the remains in what was then East Berlin (the Soviet-occupied sector of a divided Berlin) were demolished by the order of the Soviet occupation forces. Parts of the building's marble walls were said to be used to build the Soviet war memorial in Treptower Park (also in East Berlin then) or to renovate and repair the nearby war-damaged Mohrenstraße U-Bahn train station.[6] Some of the red marble was used in the palatial Underground stations in Moscow.[citation needed] Also, it is alleged that a heater from one of Hitler's rooms was placed in a Protestant hospital located not too far away from the Reich Chancellery.[7]

While the western half of the premises were taken over by the East German government for the establishment of the so-called "Death-Strip" of the Berlin Wall in 1961 (when the barrier was being constructed), a Plattenbau apartment block, together with a kindergarten, was built on the eastern half (along Wilhelmstraße) during the 1980s.

Letter reads: S. S. Catala

October 15th 1937

Hello Hello - station VGNY calling - Thanks for your letter and enclosed negative. I will return the latter later on as I neglected to get some prints made this time in. Glad you found the numbers helpful. It was the only way to keep them straight and ship-shape. Thanks for boosting our trip so much. Yes, its quite likely you may have helped bring us some business and speaking about the blow we had - that was the only bad two days we have had for some time, in fact, the weather up north has been excellent the last few trips and there is no snow yet in Stewart. As a matter of fact it has been quite mild there lately. As regards to the Norwegian ship "Solay" I can tell you that was the worst night I have seen in many a day and it would be a very easy matter to put a vessel ashore on such a night. I hope you both had a nice trip to Victoria or did you decide to let Joan go alone, for Mr. Beatty tells me he met Joan on the Victoria boat a few days ago, (He has just returned to work after having a week off). Yes, I think if you sent Mr. Hannigan's pictures to him - care of Union S.S. Co. he would get them alright for they would be put in the mail box of whatever ship he is on at the time. That, of course, goes for Mr. McLean too. I hear that the Captain received his and Robbie's enlargements O.K. but haven't seen them as yet. That was quite nice of you and I am sure they will be much appreciated. Thanks muchly for the two prints of myself which I am glad to have. Yes, of course I shall be glad of any of the others you care to send later on when you have learnt to develop and print them and thanks a lot in advance. By the way please tender my thanks to Mrs Morganhart for the candid shot of me. Well, fancy you finding the bottle trick in your science course! I'll bet you got quite a kick out of that too. So you took 60 of the girls through the Aylmer Canning Coy, eh? Its a wonder you didn't have to take another trip on the Catala to recuperate. I wonder how I'd be looking after 60 girls (! - ?). So you haven't heard the Catala blow on Friday night - eh? I'll have to tell Miss Beatty to boast up the steam pressure on the whistle a bit eh? Yes, the study of the pyramid is still fascinating and it is kind of you to offer to borrow the big book on it. I really don't know whether it would do me much good for I understand one has to be a bit of engineer and astronomer combined to understand it and it would take quite a long time to get through it. Ans to question 6 : - I have been twice through the Premier Mill and you must have misunderstood me when you thought I said I hadn't been. It was a considerable time ago. Last Summer was the last time. I have not, however, been through the mine as there wasn't time. I can't promise to obtain a snap of Miss Ebden but will try at the moment I haven't got my camera with me. Ans to question 8 : - As my letter was in reply to one in which both of you were involved. I just naturally addressed the answer to you both with no implications whatever! Yes we do miss Kelly's broadcasts and so do a great many others up north. I think the C.B.C. ought to consider their public a bit more and I imagine they have received huge piles of condemnatory letters from listeners all over the Province. Well Margo, that about covers everything, I think. Capt Findlay and the gang are as usual and wish to be remembered to you both. I I complied with your penciled request, Joan, and remembered you both to everyone). Today is quite fine with a NW wind and rather a pleasant surprise after yesterdays downpour in Vancouver. Cheerio and best wishes to Joan and Yourself. Sincerely - Bert Simpson - P.S. Had to laugh at the explanation about the missing "T" on the end of your letter.

The word Allah

The Semitic language which is spoken in the celestial spheres, is the language in which the angels and God address each other. Adam Safi-Allah spoke the same language in paradise. Adam and eve then came into the world and settled in Arabia. Their children also spoke the same language. Then as a result of the descendants of Adam spreading in the world, this language passed from Arabic, Persian, Latin and into English and God was then known by different names in the different languages. As Adam lived in Arabia, there are many words of the Semitic language which are still found in the Arabic language. God addressed the Prophets, Adam as Adam Safi-Allah, Noah as Nuh Nabi-Allah, Abraham as Ibraheem Khalil-Allah, Moses as Musa Kalim-Allah, Jesus as I’sa Ruh-Allah and Mohammed Rasul-Allah. All these titles, in the Semitic language were written on the Tablet before the arrival of the Prophets. This is why the Prophet Mohammed said: “I was a Prophet even before I came in to this world.”

Many people believe that the word Allah is a name given by Muslims, this is not so.

The Prophet Mohammed’s fathers name was Abd-Allah, at a time when Islam did not exist. Prior to the advent of Islam the Name Allah was announced with the title of every Prophet. When the souls were created, the first Name on their tongue was Allah and when the soul entered the body of Adam, it said, Ya-Allah, and only then it entered the body. Many religions understand this enigma and chant the Name Allah and many others because of doubt are deprived of the Name.

Any name which is used to point towards God is worthy of respect.

In other words, which points towards God. The mystical effect of the Name of God has been diversified due to the different names. Every letter of the alphabet has a separate numeric value. This is also a celestial knowledge. All the numeric values are connected with all of the human race. Occasionally the numeric values do not agree with the astronomical calculations as a result of which people become afflicted. Many people go to astrologers and experts of this knowledge and have charts prepared based on the stars. They name their children on this basis.

Just as the letters (a, b, j, d,) (1, 2, 3, 4) when added have the numerical value of ten. Similarly every name has a separate numeric value. As God has been given so many different names, this has caused a conflict between the numeric value of the different names. If all the people called upon God by the same name, then despite the fact that they would all have separate religions, they would all be united inwardly. They too, like Nanak Sahib and Baba Farid would then say:

“All the souls have been created by the light of God, even though their environment and communities are separate.”

The angels that are assigned tasks in the world are also taught the languages of the people of the world.

It is important for the people of every Prophet that they recite, chant and affirm the Title of their Prophet which was granted by God to the Prophet at his time, for the recognition, spiritual grace and purification of his people. The recital and affirmation should be in the same method and in the language of their Prophet.

The entry of any individual into any religion is subject to the condition that the individual accepts and affirms the Title of the Prophet of that religion. Just as the affirmation and the verbal vows are a condition of any marriage.

Entry into the heavens has been made subject to the acceptance and affirmation of the Titles of the Prophets. In the western world many Muslims and Christians have no knowledge of their Prophet’s Title furthermore many do not even know their Prophets original name (in the original language of the Prophet.)

People who only verbalize the affirmation of their Prophet’s Title rely upon their good deeds. Those that reject and do not affirm their Prophet’s Title are refused entry to paradise. Those individuals in whose hearts the affirmation of their Prophet’s Title has descended (entered) they will enter paradise without any accountability.

The revealed celestial Scriptures, whichever language they are in so long as they are in the original form, are a means to finding God. Where the texts and the translations that have been adulterated, just as adulterated flour is harmful for the stomach, the adulterated books have become harmful and people of the same religion and the same of Prophet have divided into so many sects.

To be sure of the straight and guided path it is better that you are guided by the Light (of God) also.

The method of producing light.

In prehistoric times stones would be rubbed together to make fire. Whereas a spark can also be produced by rubbing two metals together. In a similar way electricity is made from water. Similarly by the friction of the blood inside the human body, in other words electric energy is produced by the vibrating heartbeat. In every human being there is present, approximately one and a half volts of electricity due to which the body is energetic. As the heartbeat slows in old age, this reduces the electricity in the body and this in turn also causes a reduction of the energy level in the body.

Firstly, the heartbeat has to be made vibrant and pronounced. Some do this by dancing, some by sports and exercise and some people try to do this by meditating and chanting the Name of God Allah.

When the heartbeat becomes vibrant and pronounced then by chanting the Name Allah try to synchronize it with every heartbeat. Alternatively try to synchronize Allah with one heartbeat and Hu with the other. Some time by placing your hand on the heart and when you feel your heartbeat, again try to synchronize the Name Allah by chanting it with the rythm of the heartbeat and imagine that the Name Allah is entering the heart.

The chanting of Allah Hu is better and more effective but if anyone has an objection, or a fear of chanting Hu, then instead of being deprived one should solely use the Name Allah, repetitively in the chanting. It is beneficial for people who chant and practice this discipline and who read mantras to physically remain as clean as possible as the:

“disrespectful are unfulfilled and the respectful are fulfilled.”

The first method for producing light.

Write Allah on a paper in black ink, and do this exercise for as long as you wish on a daily basis. Soon thereafter, the Word Allah will be transported from the paper and hover over the eyes. Then with one-pointed concentration, attempt to transport the word from the eyes to the heart.

The second method for producing light.

Write Allah on a zero watt bulb, in yellow. Whilst you are awake or just before sleep, concentrate and try to absorb it into the eyes. When it appears on the eyes then try to transport it to the heart.

The third method for producing light.

This method is for those people who have perfect spiritual guides and teachers and who due to their spiritual connection are spiritually assisted by them.

Sit alone and imagine that your index finger is a pen. Using your finger and with your concentration, attempt to write Allah on your heart. Call upon your spiritual teacher (spiritually), so that he too may, hold your finger, and write Allah on your heart. Continue to do this exercise everyday, until you see Allah written on your heart.

By the first and second method, the Name Allah becomes inscribed on the heart, just as it was written and seen by you but when it becomes synchronized with the heartbeat, then it slowly starts to shine. In the synchronized method, the assistance of the spiritual teacher is provided and for this reason it is seen shining and well written on the heart right from the beginning.

Many Prophets and Saints have come into the world, and just for the sake of testing this, if you feel it appropriate, concentrate or call upon all of them when you are practicing your meditation.

Whilst concentrating on any Prophet or Saint, during your meditating practice, if the rhythm of your heartbeat increases, in its vibration or you feel an improvement then this means that your destiny (spiritual fruits) lies with that Prophet or Saint.

Thereafter it is beneficial to concentrate on that same person whenever you practice your meditation as spiritual grace is transferred in this way, because every Saint is spiritually connected to a Prophet, even if that Prophet is not physically living.

The spiritual fruit (grace) of every illuminated person is in the hands of one Saint or another. It is essential that the Saint is living. Sometimes a very fortunate person is gifted with celestial spiritual grace by a perfect Saint who is not living, but this is very rare. However Saints not living in our human realm can provide worldly spiritual grace and assistance to people from their tombs. This is known as Owaisi spiritual grace.

The recipients of such spiritual grace often get entangled in their spiritual insights, visions and dreams because the spiritual guide providing the assistance is in the spiritual realm and so too is Satan and the recognition of the two becomes difficult.

Along with the spiritual grace it is important to have knowledge, for which a living Saint is more appropriate. If a person (Saint) possesses spiritual grace but is without knowledge, that person is known as a Majzoob (Godly but abstracted due to the complete absorption into the Essence of God and who is not in full control of his faculties).

A person (Saint) having spiritual grace and knowledge is known as a Mehboob (literally, loved one). Such people (Saints) as a result of their knowledge provide worldly spiritual assistance as well as spiritual grace and benefit. Whereas the Majzoobs are known to provide worldly spiritual assistance to people by their unusual but accepted practices of shouting obscenities and poking people with their wooden sticks.

If any (Prophet or Saint) appears but does not help or assist you then put Gohar Shahi to the test.

You may belong to any religion, there is no condition in this respect as long as the individual is not eternally ill-fated.

Many people have received the spiritual grace of Qalb meditation from the Moon. This is obtained when there is a full Moon from the East. Look at it with concentration and when you see the image of Gohar Shahi on it say Allah, Allah, Allah three times and you will be blessed with this spiritual grace. Thereafter without any fear or reservation practice the meditation as described.

Believe (the fact) that the image on the Moon has spoken to many people in many different languages. You can try looking and speaking to it also.

About Muraqba

(transcendental meditation)

(Literally. journey. Meditation in which the soul leaves the human body)

Many people without having acquired the illumination of the spiritual entities (‘Lata’if/Shaktian’) and without attaining spiritual strength and prowess try to engage in this meditation. They either fail to reach the meditative state or become the subject of Satanic interference. This type of meditation is for illuminated people, whose spiritual entity of the self has been purified and the Qalb has been cleansed. The practice or attempt at this type of meditation is foolish no matter what type of physical worship is used to achieve this. To collect and gather the strength of the soul and the spiritual entities and then to travel to a place is what is known as meditation.

Sainthood is the one fourtieth part of Prophecy.

Every dream, meditative journey, inspiration or revelation of a Prophet is accurate and authentic and does not need verification. Only fourty out of a hundred dreams, meditative journeys, inspirations and revelations of Saints are accurate the remaining sixty percent are inaccurate.

God cannot be understood without knowledge

The lowest type of meditative journey is started only after the illumination and awakening of the spiritual entity of the Qalb. This is impossible without first achieving the meditation of the Qalb (meditation with the vibrating heartbeat synchronized with the Name Allah). It takes one jerk or shake to bring the person out of this meditative state and back to consciousness. The faculty of the augury (foretelling the future by reading verses or looking into designated books) is also connected to the Qalb.

The next stage is the meditative journey of the soul. It takes three jerks or shakes to return a person back to normality from this meditative state.

The third stage of the meditative journey is done by the spiritual entity, Anna and the soul together. The soul travels along with the spiritual entity Anna, to the realm of souls just as the Archangel Gabriel accompanied the Prophet Mohammed to the realm of souls.

People who are in this meditative state are sometimes even taken to be buried in their graves and they are unaware of this happening to them. Such a meditative state and journey was taken by the “Companions of the Cave” as a result of which they remained asleep in the cave for more than three hundred years.

When this meditative state and journey was undertaken by the Sheikh, Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani, in the jungle, the occupants of the jungle would regard the Sheikh as dead and would take him to a grave for burial but the meditative journey would break just before the burial (the Sheikh would return to consciousness).

How to recognize a special inspiration and revelation from God.

When a person has awakened and illuminated the spiritual entities in the chest and is worthy of receiving the rays of the Grace of God, then at that point God communicates with that person. God is All-Powerful and can do as he pleases and thus communicate with the human being in any way fit, but he has made a special method for his recognition so that his friends can be saved from the deception of Satan.

Firstly, text in the Semitic language appears on the seekers heart and its translation is seen in the language of the seekers mother-tongue. The text is white and shiny and the eyes close automatically and look at the text (internally). The text then passes the Qalb and moves towards the spiritual entity Sirri as a result of which it shines even more. Then the text moves towards the spiritual entity, Akhfa and from here it shines more and then moves onto the tongue. The voice then spontaneously starts to repeat that text.

If this inspiration is from Satan then an illuminated heart will dull the text and if the text is strong and prominent then the spiritual entities Sirri or Akhfa destroy that text. Further if due to the weakness of the spiritual entities the text does arrive at the tongue, then the voice will prevent it from being spoken into words.

This type of inspiration is for special types of Saints, whereas in respect of ordinary Saints, God sends messages to them through the angels or other spiritual entities. When the Archangel Gabriel accompanies the special and inspired text, this is known as revelation which is confined to the Prophets.
