Gentle Protest is the first solo exhibition by craftivist and artist Sarah Corbett. With the aim to show that protest does not always have to be aggressive, Corbett uses craft (embroidery) as a powerful tool to tackle her concerns and create slow, quiet, thoughtful and compassionate activism as a catalyst for long term positive change in our world. This exhibition explores how craft can be a powerful, change-making instrument to add to the toolbox of activism.
Corbett founded the Craftivist Collective in London in 2009. It was born out of a growing desire to create craftivism projects that used craft as the tool and activism as the priority. Now a global community and social enterprise, the Craftivist Collective provides products & services for individuals & organisations to help them pursue effective craftivism. Corbett’s work is highly regarded by professional campaigners, academics & art institutions around the world.
Born in Liverpool in 1983 Corbett has been an activist since the age of 3. Elected Head Girl at school she won lockers for pupils and she continued her campaigning at university on global issues. After graduation she had a career in campaigning for large global charities including Oxfam. In 2008 Corbett began to doubt the effectiveness of traditional and potentially hostile methods of activism. She saw how using craft as a tool could address many of her concerns and reach newer and wider audiences. Influencing activism inside and outside the charity sector she has worked as a craftivism consultant for large charities such as Unicef and Save the Children. A global speaker she has taught her craftivism approach and methodology at universities across the world and has worked in collaboration with V&A, Tate, Secret Cinema and Tatty Devine amongst others.

"On Saturday, May 11th, Occupy the Farm peacefully marched onto the Gill Tract to challenge the UC’s renewed plans for private, commercial development of this public agricultural resource, replacing 5-foot high weeds with thousands of squash, kale, basil, corn, lettuce and tomato plants, and even flowers.
Rather than recognizing this as an opportunity to position itself on the cutting edge of urban agriculture and participatory research, the University raided the farm on Monday, May 13, at 4:30 a.m. and violently arrested four peaceful farmers, three of whom were held for more than 60 hours before being released without charge. The University then ploughed over the farm that morning, destroying thousands of starts that, if nurtured, would have provided sustenance to local communities.
“This land has been vacant for years,” said an Occupy the Farm member, Matthew McHale, “the UC only destroyed the crops because it’s afraid that if the community sees what an amazing asset this would be as a community farm, they would refuse to let it be paved over.”
In protest of the UC’s actions, more than eighty farmers and community members re-converged on Monday afternoon for a rally, then marched back onto the farm to replant the field and recover some of the starts they had planted over the weekend. The University plowed the farm again Tuesday morning.
Since Occupy the Farm first planted on the Gill tract in April 2012, the group has organized at least 10 public forums focused on the Gill Tract as an asset to community-driven participatory research. The UC Berkeley administration has consistently failed to attend, despite being invited repeatedly. Students on campus however, support turning the land into an urban farm; last Spring the Associated Students of the University of California Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of Occupy the Farm."
More than 200 students put down their books to join community leaders, residents, and immigrant workers from nearby towns for a three-hour rally that marked “A Day Without Immigrants” on May 1. Organized by the newly formed Oberlin Coalition for Immigrant Rights (OCIR), the walk-out marked the end of a three-part series that included the panel “Immigration Then and Now” and a discussion with members of the Mexico Solidarity Network.
Ongoing awareness and collection campaigns organized by South Eastern Europe Clearingouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) and partners promote the collection of unwanted weapons and promote legalization and registration of weapons possessed by civilians.
On 9 March, another 48 crates containing 1,560 pieces of small arms and light weapons were destroyed by the Croatian Ministry of Interior. The sixteenth such activity brings the total number of destroyed weapons to 23,398 since the end of 2010.

Calling on all men to act now to drive action on gender equality, world leaders gather to accelerate progress at UN Women’s HeForShe Summit:
Against a global backdrop of receding rights for women and girls, as well as collective crises like climate change, conflict, and natural disasters, the HeForShe Summit gathered political, business, global development and social justice leaders to review progress on gender equality across countries, companies and communities. While UN Women recently reported that, at the current rate of progress, it may take close to 300 years to achieve full gender equality, the HeForShe Summit urged men to do their part in accelerating equality in whatever capacity they can.
"With the engaged allyship of men and boys, we are powerfully united in addressing inequality," said Sima Bahous, UN Under-Secretary-General & Executive Director, UN Women. "I see this strength in all the leaders at the HeForShe Summit, who are acting as inspiring agents of change in their fields."
At the Summit, HeForShe Alliance members shared best practices in advancing gender equality through targeted and ambitious commitments in areas such as equal representation in the workplace, economic empowerment, or global policies addressing domestic violence. World leaders gathered to speak on the importance of achieving equality, including Ms. Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine, who said "I would like to live in a world where there are no differences between people. I would like to live in a world where the HeForShe initiative is not necessary."
UN Women and HeForShe also announced new members of the HeForShe Alliance and their ambitious commitments to accelerate progress towards gender equality. H.E. Mr. Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, committed their governments to enabling gender equal policies. Bolstering HeForShe partnerships in East Asia, Recruit Holdings was announced as the latest HeForShe Champion with a focus on achieving parity in their global organization by 2025.
Leaders from public, private and academic sectors discussed the issues facing women today during the event. Anita Bhatia, UN Women Deputy Executive Director, led a discussion on the compounding effects of crisis on gender with leaders from MTN Group, PwC, and the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness. The second discussion, led by Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the United Nations Global Compact with executive leadership from UN Women, INSEAD, and HCL Technologies, reinforced the substantial difficulties women face in advancing economically and highlighted key actions to reduce these barriers, particularly as today around 2.4 billion women of working age are not afforded equal economic opportunity. One such recommendation is to ensure sponsorship, not just mentorship, throughout a woman's academic and professional experience.
Closing the event, author and activist Frederick Joseph called on men and boys around the world to embrace the role they play in recognizing gender equality through everyday actions. Actress, activist, and singer Sofia Carson closed the Summit with an inspirational musical performance and took a moment to reiterate the unanimous call that brought these leaders together—men must have an active role in achieving a more equal world.
