Protesting, among other things, a decision endangering the lives of their elderly and disabled passengers, members of Local 1764-Washington, DC, picketed MV Transportation - the company that manages Metro Access paratransit service in the Washington area - on August 29, 2011. The protest took place in front of Metro Access headquarters in Hyattsville, MD.
There were pipes, little glass doors, and huge ice box like doors in these rooms. John was busy so I didn't pester him with the question.

In this series, Muluneh explores rural water access and its impact on women’s rights, well-being, and education. While living in Ethiopia, she encountered women travelling for hours by foot while carrying heavy vessels of water. With the rise of extreme weather events caused by climate change, access to clean water is becoming a widespread issue. Droughts make its availability unpredictable, while flooding threatens the contamination of supplies. Using a striking palette of bright blue and red, Muluneh incorporates traditional African body painting and dress as a celebration of the beauty and culture of the continent. ‘The world is continually bombarded with the social plight of Africa, therefore my focus in this project was to address these topics without the cliché that we see in mainstream media. In a sense, to advocate through art.’*
In the exhibition’s final chapter, artists contemplate futures shaped by globalisation and the climate emergency.
In times of crisis, they find inspiration in the promise of new worlds and shared dreams for a new society. Dispensing with colonial visions of Africa, they turn to the ‘planetary’, where humans, technology and the natural world come together to form interconnected ecosystems.
Artists explore how urbanisation has transformed the continent and its ways of life. Foreign and domestic investment and higher-paying jobs have encouraged Africa’s young population to move to cities. Kinshasa, Lagos and Cairo are now considered megacities, with populations over 10 million. For these artists, the city becomes a site of collective histories and a dynamic stage for the production of global networks and relations.
Shifting geopolitics and plentiful resources mean Africa’s economic growth is now predicted to outpace the rest of the world. However, the exploitation of natural and human resources has left the continent caught between the promise of a brilliant future and an uncertain present. In recent years natural disasters, extreme weather and mass migration have put the future of our planet into focus. While global in reach, these issues disproportionately affect citizens of the Global South. Here, artists address this uncertainty by turning to their environment. They face the consequences of humanity’s self-destruction and explore alternative ways of being.*

A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography
(July 2023 – January 2024)
A celebration of the varied landscape of contemporary African photography today
Bringing together a group of artists from different generations, this exhibition will address how photography, film, audio, and more have been used to reimagine Africa’s diverse cultures and historical narratives.
Moving beyond a traditional photography exhibition, the show seeks to explore the many ways images travel across histories and geographies. Using themes of spirituality, identity, urbanism and climate emergency, the exhibition will guide the viewer through dream-like utopias and bustling cityscapes viewed from the artists’ perspectives.
The exhibition follows artists across the many landscapes, borders and time zones of Africa to reveal how photography allows the past and the future to co-exist in powerful and transformative ways.
...A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography brings together 36 artists who use photography to reimagine Africa’s place in the world. It is inspired by the continent’s rich cultural traditions, as well as present-day social and political realities. Drawing on the theories of Cameroonian philosopher Achille Mbembe (born 1957), the exhibition invites us to imagine ‘a world in common’. To do this, Mbembe claims, we must ‘think the world from Africa’. A World in Common explores Africa’s past, present and future to create a more expansive and inclusive narrative of humanity. It suggests that to conceive ‘a world in common’ is to imagine a future of possibility.
There is no single, definitive history of Africa. It is a continent of multiple, interconnected realities. Pushing the boundaries of photography and film, the artists in A World in Common confront reductive representations of African peoples and cultures. They address photography’s past and embrace its potential to reframe the present and shape tomorrow.
The exhibition is divided into three chapters: Identity and Tradition, Counter Histories and Imagined Futures. The first chapter is rooted in ancient African cultures and traditions which have survived periods of struggle and resistance. Inspired by Pan-African liberation movements, the second chapter looks at photography’s ability to produce counter histories - archival practices and the agency of photographer and subject are brought into focus. The third chapter explores the impact of globalisation and the climate emergency. Here, artists imagine a shared future informed by common realities. A World in Common creates space for exchange and discovery, inviting us to imagine new ways of inhabiting the earth.

Northern Light CA Dean Hospital in Greenville, Maine, on Sept 12, 2024. In 2022, the hospital received $622,000 in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) to improve access to care within rural Piscataquis County. With the funding made available through the Rural Emergency Health Care Program, the hospital was able to purchase digital imaging equipment, such as a CT scanner and a mobile X-ray machine, which aid in rapid patient diagnosis and treatment. The funding also paid for a snowplow truck with a sander, which will help keep the hospital and its emergency services accessible to patients on even the snowiest of days. The historic but newly renovated critical access hospital, which is the smallest hospital in Maine, provides care for residents of Greenville and other rural communities, as well as for visitors to the scenic Moosehead Lake recreation area. RAF ALCONBURY
Building 210 - Avionics Building/ Dragon Mountain
"The Avionics building, constructed c. 1989 by US Air Force, is a two storey, partly sunken reinforced concrete bunker, rectangular in plan. The building accommodates a drive-through access roadway and is capped with a rough concrete buster cap designed to absorb the impact of a missile before penetrating the bunker's roof.
INTERIOR: The purpose of the avionics building was to service the electronic components of reconnaissance aircraft and process the data retrieved. The interior of the building housed life support systems, stainless steel decontamination rooms, electronics workshops, photographic dark rooms, handling and storage areas. It is protected internally by subterranean 'portcullis' type blast doors on a hydraulic release mechanism. By the main doors are a suite of decontamination rooms and male and female toilets. An internal vehicular decontamination facility is also present. Large rooms on the lower floor housed the computers (now removed) where the data was downloaded and analysed. One of these rooms has a painted motto 'Aircrews live by the knowledge, skill, awareness and integrity of their maintenance people' over the door. A unique feature is the system for maintaining air pressure in the case of attack, by the use of compressed air cylinders on the lower floor, still present. All fixtures and fittings apart from the air cylinders and generators, floor surfaces, wall panelling and doors have been removed.
HISTORY: Land for an airfield at Alconbury was first acquired in 1938 as a satellite landing ground for RAF Upwood and when war broke out, the base was used by Blenheims from RAF Wyton. As part of the US 8th Air Force, it fulfilled a variety of roles until being handed back to the RAF in November 1945. In June 1953, the base was reactivated for the US 3rd Air Force and from 1959, Alconbury assumed its principal Cold War role as the home to various reconnaissance squadrons. In 1983, U2/TR-1 spy planes were permanently based at Alconbury, resulting in the construction of a number of hardened structures including the Avionics building and a number of Hardened Aircraft Shelters which have group value. Following the cessation of the Cold War, flying ceased in March 1995 and the base was released for disposal.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: The hardened Avionics building at Alconbury airfield was constructed by the US Air Force in 1989. It is a very rare surviving example of this building type, and along with other buildings from this period, represents the physical manifestation of the global division between capitalism and communism that shaped the history of the late 20th century. The Avionics building is unique amongst the few such buildings in England, because of its size, form and internal survival of the vehicular decontamination unit and compressed air re-pressurising system. It is uniquely associated with the U2/TR1 aircraft, stationed only at Alconbury. As one of the last Cold War structures built in the country, it is the most sophisticated hardened structure remaining and as such has very special architectural and historic interest."

The longer 47" arms create a larger passageway. This model comes in both manual and electric lock control versions.
The electric model is bi-directional and works with any access control system or push button. The turnstile can be ordered with card reader mounting plates, and each rotation direction can be configured as fail-safe or fail-lock.
When a valid credential is presented, the turnstile unlocks, allowing a single controlled rotation in the requested direction. Unauthorized entries, or attempts to tailgate on an authorized entry, are rejected.
Both the manual and electric lock versions have built in key override controls and each direction can be adjusted for free passage, controlled passage or no passage.

Anti-entrapment design
The built-in speed control self-adjusts to the pushing force of the user. Even when a user pushes hard on the turnstile arms, the speed of rotation is controlled. This increases safety and reduces the chance of a rapidly spinning rotating section catching a user’s heel.
In addition to controlling the rotation speed, the turnstile's speed control also greatly reduces kickback of the rotating section toward the user when the turnstile re-locks. After each passage, the rotating section smoothly returns to the home position and locks in place, ready for the next user. The unique design of this turnstile also makes it mechanically impossible for a user to get locked inside the turnstile.
Our electric turnstiles are configured for fail-lock in the entrance direction and fail-safe in the exit direction. When power is off this prevents people from entering, but allows personnel to exit. This can be varied per user preference.
