The South Access Road, which connects Canyon City and Sattler, TX. During the '02 flood, this road was completely washed away. It was impossible to rebuild it for months after the flood, as water continued to flow through the gorge at a fairly high rate.
When it was rebuilt, the South Access Road bridge was intentionally designed to break away in the event of another major flood. The rationale was that it's better for the road to be destroyed than for it to create a debris dam.
Past the bridge, Canyon Gorge cuts through the alluvial flood plain for another 1/2 mile before entering the Guadalupe River just above Horseshoe Falls. The '02 flood significantly widened the river at Horseshoe Falls and dropped quite a bit of debris at the base of the falls themselves. The latter was a good thing, since prior to the flood, the falls formed a Class V feature during periods of high dam release, and this killed at least one recreational boater. Now, Horseshoe Falls is never more than a Class III feature.
