Gadmen is a small village in the canton of Bern, located in the upper Gadmertal (Gadmen Valley), which is part of the municipality of Innertkirchen. The Cardrona bra fence is a quirky tourist attraction in Central Otago.
Around Xmas 1998/New Year 1999, four bras mysteriously appeared overnight on a fence along the Cardrona Valley Road. A few stuffy locals were miffed, but passersby began clipping their undergarments to the fence on the way past.
Colourful bras of all shapes and sizes were added (by the end of Feb.1999, there were 60+), but it wasn't until an unknown thief began cutting them off under cover of darkness that the fence gained fame.
Every time they were cut away, more were added. The tit-for-tat garnered global media attention, and even more bras: by 2006, the number of bras stood at close to 800!
In April 2006, joyously discovering the bra fence was on its own public road reserve, the prudish local council ruled it was a "traffic hazard" and an "eyesore", and ordered it removed. So it was taken down...then reassembled at the driveway entrance (a-ha, private property!) of the Cardrona Distillery.
Minor thefts continued: in 2014, two local females were caught on camera, removing bras.
Then in 2015, the fence was re-branded as "Bra-drona" to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation (surely too worthy a cause to sabotage): by 2017, $30,000 had been raised from people leaving donations in a box at the site.
Similar fences have popped up around the country (in Wairarapa, Tapawera and Nelson, and even the local Cardrona Hotel has some bras hanging from its ceiling) but this one is simply the breast!
Next time you're passing, please add a bra and leave a donation... :-)

We had a layover at Sea-Tac and took advantage of a day lounge pass for the lounge in the North Terminal. Excellent choice. With our elite status we have access to lounges in many airports and this one was one of the best. Planes were landing and taking off from the South so landing had the planes turning off the runways before we could see them. I took these photos in mid-September 2022 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The memory can be a powerful thing. it's how we learn and grow and is a huge part of what defines us as individuals.
Its so powerful that memories we no longer have access to, a past long forgotten to our concious self, can have the power determine the course of lives. Pain long forgotten can stop us taking risks, can cripple our confidence or even set us on a path of destruction.
it can however, push us in the opposite direction, push us to achieve, to excel, to be more that we were, where we came from and who we were told we would become.
A huge thanks to my husband and kids for helping me squish barefoot in the mud on a freezing cold day, so that i could be a ghost and extra thanks to lili for getting her hands all muddy for the shot... i know how hard that was for ya ;-D
