After a week of rain and bad weather, I wanted to get in one last shot from the Embarcadero before the New Year. The city had other ideas for the location and surrounded it with chain link fencing in preparation for the festivities. This was about as close as I could get. Its a shame too since the weather, clouds and moon were ideal this night.

The Nissan Prairie could be said to be pretty much the first purpose build MPV, first going on sale in Europe in 1981. Originally branded Datsun, the Nissan name was applied after 1985. The original design of vehicle was also groundbreaking in that it did not have a B pillar between the front and rear doors, both doors locking into the roof. Whilst an innovative idea, motoring reviewers of the day suggested that this design caused a worrying flex of the body when cornering at speed, and so it was redesigned for the 1986 model revision. These vehicles were a favourite on the late 80's school runs of my youth, taking over from the likes of the Talbot Rancho and Volvo 240 as middle class child movers - they were contemporaries of the Volvo 740 estate and early Renault Espace models outside the Home Counties school gate. The vehicle shown here appears to be a late Series 1 model, first registered in September 1985 and featuring the aforementioned lack of B pillar, allowing full access to both sides which has led to it's continued use as a load lugger for a neighbourhood cycle store. According to the DVLA MOT check this vehicle has spent some time off the road after a pretty disasterous MOT fail in 2010 the rectification of which no doubt involved considerable amounts of underbody welding. Noted also several times is 'passenger seats removed' indicating it's continued use as a load lugger.

The Island of Spinalonga by Clive Metcalfe

Spinalonga (Greek: Σπιναλόγκα) is an island located in the Gulf of Elounda in north-eastern Crete, in Lasithi, next to the town of Plaka. The island is further assigned to the area of Kalydon. It is near the Spinalonga peninsula ("large Spinalonga") – which often causes confusion as the same name is used for both. The official Greek name of the island today is Kalydon.

According to Venetian documents, the name of the island originated in the Greek expression στην Ελούντα stin Elounda (meaning "to Elounda"). The Venetians could not understand the expression so they familiarized it using their own language, and called it spina "thorn" longa "long", an expression that was also maintained by the locals. The Venetians were inspired for this expression by the name of an island near Venice called by the same name and which is known today as the island of Giudecca.

The island was subsequently used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. The last inhabitant, a priest, did not leave the island till 1962, in order to maintain the Greek Orthodox tradition of commemorating a buried person 40 days, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, and 5 years after their death. There were two entrances to Spinalonga, one being the lepers entrance, a tunnel known as "Dante's Gate". This was so named because the patients did not know what was going to happen to them once they arrived. However, once on the island they received food, water, medical attention and social security payments. Previously, such amenities had been unavailable to Crete's leprosy patients, as they mostly lived in the area's caves, away from civilization.

After the leper colony was dissolved, Spinalonga sank into oblivion; interest in it was revived by the work of people like Maurice Born.

Spinalonga was one of the last active leper colonies in Europe; others that have survived Spinalonga include Tichileşti in eastern Romania, Fontilles in Spain and Talsi in Latvia. As of 2002, few lazarettos remain in Europe.

Today, the uninhabited island is a popular tourist attraction in Crete. In addition to the abandoned leper colony and the fortress, Spinalonga is known for its small pebble beaches and shallow waters. The island can easily be accessed from Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. Tourist boats depart from all three towns on a daily basis (every 30 minutes from Elounda). Since there is no accommodation on Spinalonga, the tours last only a few hours.

Spinalonga is under consideration to become a World Heritage Site.

Taken from a point just below the summit of Mount Teide and below smoking evidence that the volcano is still very much alive. This is one of the many sulphur fields at this height and the smell is very strong on occasions.

This part of the peak is easily accessed by cable car and a short walk takes one away from most of the tourists. The main summit is away to the left and out of shot. It is possible to climb to the very top and look into the cone but you have to have the foresight to apply for a permit. Oh and not be too affected by the difficulty in breathing - the height is about 11k feet at this point.

Isalo is one of Madagascar's most beautiful parks. It contains sculpted buttes, vertical rock walls and, best of all, deep canyon floors shot through with streams, lush vegetation and pools for swimming. All of this changes with the light, culminating in extraordinary sunsets beneath a big sky. Add all this to easy access off the RN7 and you understand why this is Madagascar’s most visited park.

At more than 800 sq km, it’s also a large park, so if you want to go off on your own there is plenty of room for exploration, with everything from two-hour to week-long hikes. There's also an excellent chance of spotting ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux's sifaka around the Nemaza campsite.
