A sad sight at West Wye, as two straight air equipped AC44C6Ms lead a loaded ore train to Two Harbors for the first time ever. Hard pass for me.
The start of a fun chase of southbound NS 776 was here in Island Ford, Va. Leading the way on the Roanoke District is two brand new AC44C6M rebuilds, both completed in October of this year.
With an especially dirty CP AC4400 on the point, a southbound oil train makes its way into the yard in Ottumwa, Iowa where it will take the siding for a crew change and locomotive fueling. The train has just crossed of the Des Moines River and rolls past the set searchlight signals that guard the approach to the BNSF diamond on the other side of the river.

After meeting westbound train 23K, eastbound manifest 36T continues to head east for Binghamton as it parallels the Canisteo River just east of CP CAM.
In what looks like a big version of a Path PA-5, NS AC44C6M 4001 leads Conrail OI-14 eastbound through Journal Square on the Waldo Running Track with outbound trash for Ohio. While this was once a thru-freight route for both the Penny and Conrail, it is now only used for running around the 62V/63V and for headroom out of Kearny Yard.
The 4001 was involved in a wreck in April of 2017 and was recently repaired by the Juniata Shops last year. Ironically, I snapped a photo NS 1036 here almost a year ago, which was involved in the same wreck as the 4001. (flic.kr/p/2iBFcrf).
NS AC44C6M 4317 hustles 22A westbound past 'Big Tree' in Elliston, VA as a fresh snow blankets the ground.
Norfolk Southern train 36T works it way southbound on the Southern Tier as it parallels the Canisteo River at Browns Crossing. The train will soon stop in the siding at CP-CAM and wait for westbound train 23K to pass before continuing to Binghamton.
Recently rebuilt (Dec 2020) Norfolk Southern AC44C6M 4318 looks minty fresh leading a westbound grainer down the Columbia River Gorge on the BNSF Fallbridge Sub at Maryhill WA, Mar 7 2021.
Under stormy skies, this trio of NS units leads a mixed freight east on the Harrisburg Line. They are nose-to-tail, aka elephant style.

It seems that a business east of the Mississippi has a contract with the Wash oil loadout. The train originates on Norfolk Southern and is turned over to BNSF. However, most of the time, the train has been running with at least a few NS units all the way to the oil transloaded facility. On this particular day, an interesting NS/FXE/NS trio lead the train.

With a solo AC44C6M, Norfolk Southern's U52 job from Weller spots a cut of empty coke cars at the Suncoke Jewell coke loader in Janey, Virginia and will then head around the wye to tie down at the yard. The train is currently on the western end of the Dismal Creek Branch, the rest of which has been out of service since the downtown in coal traffic in 2020.

A chilly February day comes to a close as NS AC44C6M 4265 leads an eastbound manifest through Glen Lyn, VA on the western end of the Christiansburg, VA.
Norfolk Southern AC44C6M number 4002 has been released from the paint shop in Altoona, Pennsylvania, wearing the third edition of the special prototype "Mane" scheme. Originally built by GE as standard-cab D9-40C number 8789, 4002 was rebuilt by Norfolk Southern's East End Shop in Roanoke, Virginia (the same shop that built NW class J number 611) and painted by Juniata Shop. The "Roanoke prototype" scheme features a tuscan red stripe highlighting the horse's mane behind the cab.

The last NS 201 I was able to catch in the daylight thunders over the New River in Radford, Va. as the sun is getting low in the sky. This train is usually a midnight-ish run through the area now.
Manifest/autorack train NS 393 heads west on the Whitethorne district at control point Northfork. Normally anything west out of Roanoke takes the Christiansburg district, but there was a ton of track work on that line yesterday so this was sent up the Whitethorne. A blah AC44C6M leads the train, but when one is sent west on this line I try to grab a shot or two no matter what the power is.

A coal train heads East on the Virginian for interchange with the KNWA. I did not expect to end up on the Virginian on this trip. We were planning on sticking to CSX Kentucky coal and ended up in WV and Virginia. A great time with a group of good friends.
Another look at CSX C733, which had stopped at Bound Brook due to a wheel defect. The westbound NJ Transit Raritan Valley Line train seen arriving in the previous photo has departed for Raritan while NS 28X appears and overtakes the rear DPU on the idle coal train.

With one of Norfolk Southern's horse mane AC44C6Ms on the point, 23K slides between the old B&M era searchlights at Farley on its trip west. While this trip started off with some murky weather, west of Gardiner the skies cleared up nicely, and as an added bonus, most of the other railfans that were out hadn't bothered to pursue it this far west, giving my friend Don Marson and I the train mostly to ourselves. The 4002 is leading another fresh graduate of the AC44C6M program, the 4044, and an ex-Conrail C40-8W with about a mile and a half of train behind them.
On it's second revenue run after being rebuilt at the Juniata Shops, NS 4001 speeds through the rural farm fields of eastern Ohio on the NS Youngstown Line. Along with another fresh rebuild, NS 4001 was being used to bring a train of storage coal hoppers to Meadville.

With only moments of daylight left to spare, the Tennessee Alabama & Georgia heritage unit leads NS I69 across the massive Ohio Connecting Bridge in Pittsburgh, PA. Thanks to a late tip I learned this unit was in the area and figured the OC Bridge offered the best chance of catching some usable daylight as the sun was setting behind the hills to the west. I69 (eye-six-nine) is an extra section of 269 which operates between Port Newark, NJ and Chicago, IL. The TAG unit would pass through Pittsburgh again 28 or so hours later under the cover of darkness leading an I68 headed right back to New Jersey.
