With the sun quickly setting to the west, 13R soars over the large trestle in Altavista that crosses the former Virginian mainline, and the Stauton River. A pair of the now ubiquitous AC44C6M rebuilds are leading a SD33ECO south on the former Southern mainline, with a lengthy train in tow.

Cruising along through the control point of Patrick Henry in Brookneal, VA, NS 276 is seen passing the CPLs that guard the interlocking. The track in the foreground is the Vabrook Connection, which connects the Altavista District to the Durham District, and is primarily used for the coal trains going to the power plants on that line.

My friend Stan came up on Wednesday and we figured we could get the shot of an Eastbound passing the CPL's at Solitude Thursday morning . We got there about an hour ahead of time, watching the shadows give way for full suns and the Alleghany's in the background

What went from a sunny morning in Randolph Wisconsin shooting 1003 quickly turned into a Oh shit lets go, followed by a waiting on one, ope taking the siding waiting on another. In what is a fairly rare occurrence a loaded grain train started the day off by leaving Decatur Michigan in the early afternoon in snow turned into absolute last golden light.... after the train passed. Here B0T finally rolls under the classic coal tower in Michigan city behind two GP60's bracketing three GE's. We all hoped it was going to be a far earlier shot than it was but thank god for having the portable sun in the car for this. The top of the coal tower is in a slight shade of orange as the last minutes of sun finally poked out of the clouds as the power rolled under casting the beast in what turned out to be Killer orange light, about 5' above the engines.

Norfolk Southern Westbound 110 rolls slowly back onto NS trackage at May Street in a heavy snow shower. After traversing the TRRA from Southern, the train is now entering yard limits on the Broadway Side just South of NS Luther Yard.

A pair of NS rebuilds, one from Wabtec and one from Progress Rail, lead Norfolk Southern manifest freight 376 as it heads north over High Bridge, crossing over the Kentucky River in High Bridge, Kentucky. With specially painted AC44C6M #4001 in the lead, NS 350 rounds the superelevated curve east of the Amtrak station in Durham. Storms from the previous night have left a brilliant blue sky over the normally humid research triangle region. Although these have existed for almost seven years at this point, the "sonic bonnets" have evaded me up to this point. Was glad to finally get one, and leading in good light.

The train crossing above 66X is passing through CP HIP as it crosses Rockville Bridge.

On the drive home following the NS's Pulaski District we couldn't find a Westbound to photograph in great light but in the waning moments of light we did shot this load eastbound coal train with a pair of manned GE Helper's on the rear hauling in at Duncan. Our hopes were high that we would pull a rabbit out of the hat and shot a meet, it was not to be, they turned the headlight out, tied down the train and cut off the helpers, reasons unknown, oh well.
