Rebuilt by MK/MPI in the late 90's, the Houston Port Terminal Railroad Authority once had a fleet of 32 MK1500D locomotives (24 owned by PTRA, 8 owned by HB&T/BNSF). However, by 2023 they were being phased out in favor of leased GP38-2's from GATX/GMTX.
Now in 2025 all the MK1500D's have been sold off, though several still reside as plant switchers for some of the many customers along and around the Houston Ship Channel. For example, Frontier Logistics in Pasadena acquired eight of the locomotives from the PTRA. Here is one of them, PTRA 9604, with its number boards and headlights missing, plus its PTRA logos patched over.
PTRA 9604 was built for the Reading as GP7 RDG 636 in October 1953. After the Reading Railroad became part of Conrail in 1976, this Geep came over as well. It was patched in early 1978 as CR 5838, and rebuilt into a GP8 at Morrison-Knudsen in Boise, emerging as CR 5462 in December 1978. Eventually, Conrail traded the locomotive into EMD and it would later return to Morrison-Knudsen for rebuild again, becoming PTRA 9604 in June 1996.

NS 27A swings thru a curve at Oxford , AL with NS 8794 in the lead. These old sparty's are being renumbered and rebuilt a handful at a time. They were NS's first delves into the Dash 9 craze that swept the country but unlike other RR's NS would opt for standard cab equipped units. It was however with the arrival of NS 8889 in January 1996 that from that point onwards they would come equipped with the safety or wide cabs. Recently NS has begun a program to rebuild their first Dash 9's that were standard cabbed with safety cabs.
Muted light was unwelcome but not unwarranted as typical summertime clouds make getting sunny and photography a chore. Just moments prior to its arrival, this location had been in full sun but as soon as all EMD and all IC powered CN local L-562 rounded the curve a cloud showed up on cue and the wound wasn’t left to feel any better as the sun popped back out as the train cleared.
