While on the subject of "Alco's", not seen in Victoria until the 1980's; Running about 4 hours behind schedule, 960 & 958 power the Westbound "Overland" out of Murray Bridge and keep heading towards Adelaide, still about 2 and a half hours away. 10:30am on Monday, the 21st of May, 1979.
Taken and edited on iPhone 3GS (4 mp). Chess 960 is a variation of the game, where the initial position of the pieces (not the pawns) is random (with the exception of the king having to be placed between the rooks and the bishops in opposite colour squares). Other than that, the game develops identically and with the same rules. Introduced by the great World Champion Bobby Fischer, Chess 960 (there are 960 possible initial positions, hence the name) differentiates itself from regular chess in that it eliminates the whole opening theory, which is a major part of serious chess, while keeping the essence and the different aspects of the game intact. Basically, it promotes talent and skill over theory and memory. Give it a try, it's fun!

I like the wheels on this, but bet they're a nightmare to clean. Oddly out of MOT, hopefully just an oversight by the owner.

Today’s Guy Wulfrunian is the first of the WHL batch of twenty-five which were all delivered in the original red between June and September 1963.
With the vast Stourton railway sidings in the background, 960 (WHL960) is wearing the revised red livery and is just about to head up the hill towards the former West Riding tramcar shed on Wood Lane. The road layout was changed beyond all recognition in the mid to late 1960s when the M1 was built and then again when the M1 was extended to Hook Moor resulting in the top section of the motorway being re-numbered to M621
British Rail introduced Freightliner block trains in the mid to late 1960s so the sidings would become the container base.

Loading dock area of a San Francisco building.
As life trends slowly back towards a more normal world, I was recently able to join my Studio Nocturne friends (a group of San Francisco Bay Area night photographers) for the resumption of our annual fall “open studio” events in conjunction with the ArtSpan San Francisco Open Studios. The group and its ancestor, The Nocturnes, has shown night photography during this event for a couple of decades. Things were more or less suspended last year, for reasons I hardly need to explain, but this year we were able to offer a very successful open studio event in North Beach, followed by a “pop-up” event in Dogpatch.
So, for the first time in a couple of years, I spent the better part of several full days in San Francisco, showing art, working with my colleagues, talking to visitors about our work. This return to something feeling a bit like the old normal was wonderful. It was also great to once again feel like the life of this city was returning — masked and socially-distanced, yes, but still. The photograph includes the “view” from my location at the pop-up event. As an aside, its composition reminds me of the ubiquitous “chyron” displays on television…

My part of the exhibition is hung and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of my glamourous assistant Jasmin, Marion, Steve, Kristi and the big fella from Cork Steven. Not to forget Adam at Trans, Alan at Jessops and Christian.
A couple of hours tomorrow (more or less) will see the 500 odd photographs from the ttv'ers who sent their work hung by mid afternoon.
Then home for a tidy up etc etc and back for a beer at 7pm
See ya there
This immaculate 960 is owned by someone who is arguably the most popular person in the Volvo community in the lower mainland.
There are a couple of things on this car that I used to have on my first 244 many years ago.
The plastic Swedish number plate and the metal CAA grille badge.
And that is because I sold that car to the guy who owns this car.
And that normal but regrettful occurrence led to a friendship years later. As today, he is my mechanic.
