On a lovely late fall day the last bit of color lingers in the trees as outbound Keolis/MBTA train 813 slows for their station stop approaching MP 197 on Track 3 of Amtrak's New Haven Line with a 6/0 set trailing MPI HSP46 2021.
Obscured by the trees and catenary poles in the right center background, beyond the signal for BORO interlocking, stands the old wooden tower that was known as SS165 in NH days. Allegedly constructed in 1898, it was relocated here when the NH undertook their massive grade separation project through town and built their two new stations between 1903 and 1906. This tower also holds the distinction of being the last in service on the corridor in MA, not closing down until 1993. Amazingly it survives three decades later despite regular reports of its imminent demise.
Looking over the scene on the left side is the brick Second Congregational Church that was constructed on Park Street in 1904. The congregation dates from 1748 and is a daughter church of the First Congregational Church in the old town section of North Attleborough. This is actually the third structure in which congregants have gathered. Originally located in a meeting house on what is now the common, Second Congregational had a stately white clapboard building built in 1825 which was removed in the early 1950s to make way for the addition of a new Fellowship Hall and education rooms. The clock in the tower of this third building was owned originally by the city but now belongs to the church and seems to be keeping perfect time.

LA SOSTENIBILE LEGGEREZZA DELL'ESSERE.

Nog steeds probeer ik af en toe wat Belgische spoorlijnen te bezoeken, die ik nog niet op foto heb... dat bracht mij onlangs naar de restanten van de industriële spoorlijn nummer 288: Floreffe - Parc industriel de la Basse-Sambre.
Dit korte lijntje schijnt in 1986 aangelegd te zijn en takte in Floreffe af van de spoorlijn 130: Namen - Charleroi. Het lijntje 288 lag daarbij in het verlengde van het voormalige spoor 1. Dit wijkspoor voor treinen richting Charleroi werd echter opgebroken in het kader van de vernieuwing van de bovenleiding op de lijn 130. Het oude spoor 2 is daarom nu het huidige spoor 1.
Een goede tien jaar geleden lag dat spoor 1 er nog... bij dezen een paar foto's van uit de tijd dat het wijkspoor 1 nog bestond.
Op spoor 2 zien we op deze foto de AM75 'varkensneus' 813 die onderweg is als L-trein naar Charleroi. Op de voorgrond het kopspoortje aan het einde van spoor 1.
Jaren terug plaatste ik deze foto bewust niet op Flickr, want tja veel te veel graffiti op de trein. Maar hé, normen veranderen blijkbaar...

Nickel Plate Road GP9 813 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1959 (c/n 25091) on EMD Order 5992, class ERS-17g on the NKP, became N&W 2813, then NS 1483, then DME 1483, and it appears it was retired in 1997 and was sold to Taylor Machine Co., and later to Otter Tail Valley Railroad.

GWR Saddle Tank 0-6-0 no. 813 stands at Kidderminster during Severn Valley Railway's Autumn Steal Gala.
150 years ago lime was produced in 4 lime kilns. The beach at low tide shows the remnants of timber jetties, trackways and stone constructions where the boats came in to unload their cargoes of limestone and coal. Four massive stone kilns stand just above the beach now largely hidden in a thicket of sloe and may. The different limestones had different uses: that from the Pembrokeshire made good agricultural lime, while that from the Glamorgan coast made a strong cement.
