I don't remember taking this particular picture, and I have no idea what ever happened to the shovel. I'm sure the kids don't remember the trip; they'll have to rely on the film telling them they were there; that they once were that small, and that digging in the sand with a little plastic shovel made perfect sense.
Another one of the former Spondon vehicles I never caught up with, this one was a chance encounter whilst we headed to the nearest bus stop to board the 12 back to Derby!!

Just before the traffic flow was reversed in Kettering's Gold Street, United Counties 809 (RNV 809M) loads outside the shopping centre on the 269 service to the mystery destination of Bryant Road. Subsequently vehicles could only travel down Gold Street, though during the day it is (theoretically) pedestrianized.
809 spent its life at Kettering, being one of ten VRs delivered to UCOC in the spring of 1974 and was withdrawn at the end of 1988, by then in Stagecoach ownership, passing to Ensign of Purfleet and later seeing service in the Portsmouth area.
