La laguna de Gallocanta se encuentra en medio del Sistema Ibérico, en una planicie a 1.000 metros de altura sobre el nivel del mar.
Se trata de una gran depresión de tipo endorreico-estepario que empezó a formarse a finales de la Era Terciaria (hace unos 2 millones de años), y siguió desarrollándose durante toda la Era Cuaternaria.
Del complejo lagunar que existía en toda la cuenca, hoy quedan diversas áreas activas entre las que podemos destacar, la laguna de Gallocanta y de la Zaida, la laguna de Guialguerrero y dos lagunicas en Santed, una dulce y otra salada.
La laguna de Gallocanta tiene un área de 14,4 km², con una anchura máxima de 2,8 km por 7,7 km de largo. Con una capacidad máxima de 5 hm³, la profundidad de sus aguas suele ser de 45-50 cm, aunque en época de aguas altas puede llegar hasta los 2 m.
