El embalse y la presa de Almendra (también conocidos como salto de Villarino) son una obra de ingeniería hidroeléctrica construida en el curso inferior del río Tormes. Está situada a 5 km de la localidad salmantina de Almendra y a 7 km de la zamorana población de Cibanal, en Castilla y León, España.
Constituye la presa más alta2 y uno de los embalses más extensos de España.3
El tramo en el que se sitúa se conoce como las arribas del Tormes, una profunda depresión geográfica originada por la erosión milenaria del río.
Forma parte del sistema Saltos del Duero junto con las infraestructuras instaladas en Aldeadávila, Castro, Ricobayo, Saucelle y Villalcampo. La presa de Almendra es la más alta de España, posee una altura de 202 m,2 es de tipo Bóveda y está construida a base de 2.188.000 m³ de hormigón.a hidroeléctrica es muy peculiar. Está situada unos kilómetros más al oeste, en Villarino de los Aires, de ahí que a esta infraestructura también se la conozca como Salto de Villarino. En esta localidad se construyeron los poblados de La Rachita y Santa Catalina para dar cobijo a los trabajadores.
Es una obra que, tanto en su diseño como en su concepción, derrocha "grandes dosis" de ingenio. No es un salto hidroeléctrico al uso en el que tenemos una presa y debajo de ésta los grupos turbina-alternador, que producen energía eléctrica aprovechando la máxima altura entre el nivel superior del agua en el embalse y la cota de desagüe de las turbinas. Conviene aclarar que en un salto hidroeléctrico, más importante que disponer de un gran caudal de agua, es que ésta esté disponible lo más alta posible, dado que la producción eléctrica es casi proporcional a la altura desde la que podamos hacer descender el agua.
En el caso de Almendra-Villarino, las turbinas no se encuentran a pie de presa, con lo que conseguiríamos una altura de 202 m; sino que tiene una toma de agua casi en la cota inferior y esta discurre por un túnel excavado en la roca de 7,5 m de diámetro y 15.000 m de longitud. Esta galería casi al final se bifurca en dos de 5 m de diámetro y cada una de estas a su vez, en dos metálicas de 2,8 m, las cuales alimentan a cada uno de los cuatro grupos turbina-alternador; desaguando estos en el embalse de Aldeadávila, en el río Duero. Con esto se consigue obtener una altura de 410 m, con una superficie de embalse de sólo 8.650 ha; posiblemente para conseguir esa altura, en un salto convencional, se hubiese necesitado inundar la mitad de las provincias de Salamanca y Zamora.
Además, los grupos turbina-alternador son reversibles y pueden funcionar como motor-bomba y dado que el caudal del Tormes durante la noche. Como hay excedente de energía en la red (debido a que se reduce el consumo e instalaciones generadoras como las nucleares no pueden parar) la central invierte su funcionamiento y bombea agua desde el embalse de Aldeadávila (Duero) en la parte inferior, al de Almendra (Tormes) en la parte superior. Es capaz de invertir el funcionamiento (producción de electricidad - bombeo) en un espacio de tiempo muy corto. El de Almendra es uno de los embalses más grandes de España.3 Se extiende por 8.650 hectáreas de superficie por la que discurre el cauce natural del río Tormes a su paso por los arribes. La superficie de la cuenca vertiente es de 7.100 km². Posee una capacidad total de 2.648 hm³ de agua.
Su construcción supuso el abandono y posterior anegación de la localidad zamorana de Argusino. En la actualidad su territorio forma parte del municipio de Villar del Buey. Los términos municipales que se vieron afectados por el embalse son los de Almendra, Carbellino, El Manzano, Ledesma, Monleras, Roelos de Sayago, Salce, Sardón de los Frailes, Villar del Buey y Villaseco de los Reyes.

This is much more typpical of what I have with me on a daily basis.
Our eldest took up the alto sax when she started senior school last September, having shown no inclination to play an instrument before. Like most parents, we were keen for them to learn an instrument but weren't going to strong arm them.
She initially rented one from school but we bought this nth hand sax for her 12th b'day. To her credit, she has gone from making the honking and squeaking noises of a lonesome goose to very credible tunes in 4 short months.
A little of this might be due to my darling spouse's Rottweiler-like attitude to homework. As an ex-girly swot who sailed through school with the best grades, our girls don't get any let up. Homework and sax practice must be done first and foremost - no fun is allowed until all school work is finished.
I go along with all this (what husband doesn't?) but I have quite a different attitude. Kids need to learn to be educational independent and self-motivated. Any achievements should be those of the child's abilities and not how pushy their parents / school is.
However, some kids do need a kick up the backside and some don't. I didn't and have always resented being told what to do from a young age.
Anyhoo, for some bizarre reason, it is called a 'saxophalone' in this house. And the pushy middle-class parent attitude to practice is working a treat. However, she isn't into Jazz sax just yet, so my work isn't finished.
I was walking in downtown Montréal the other day when I saw Arsvuni on the other side of the street. His moustache readily called my attention: I had to stop and go talk to him. So I did. From the start he was very nice and friendly, quickly accepting to take part in my 100 Strangers project. He told me he is Armenian but has lived in Montréal for 43 years. He also mentioned he is married to a Chinese woman. As for the moustache, the last time he shaved it was when he was in the army, in his twenties.

Just i quick shot of my 18month old Isaac today, well i say quick i only ended up with this shot after a while and had to sit him on a chair to keep him still near the flash. the best thing is he always smiles he is a happy chapp.
p.s the snow was back today hope it melts away quick!!
