The final piece is another composite and is out of sequence but makes best advantage of the available traction with the Monk Bretton Sand Train now having moved on a little down the old, left over segment of the Midland's push to the north, but thwarted in the early part of the last century by the First World War and agreements with other rail companies, the line never got further than Dewsbury and is now a walkable track bed. Heading south to deliver its cargo of sand, which local knowledge informs is now in some short supply from Middleton Towers and so the source of the glassworks sand could be switched to a source further north, much further north, Scotland in fact. If this were the case then the Monk Bretton working would come in off the junction behind the camera. The sand train would then take this turn out and come up the grade heading for the Monk Bretton branch on the curve joining the Midland line, just south of here, at the site of what used to be the Crofton Colliery. In addition I was informed that Network Rail has just spent a large amount of money up-grading the line including accommodation crossings, ballasting etc and so this may point to the sand train moves being switched from the south to the north and so using the junction shown in the above picture. Further, local word also had it that there was a plan to move large amounts of coal to the only existing coal facility on the branch, at Monckton Coking plant, just north east of Royston next to the branch line. This facility is still operating and it would be a certain revival for the fortunes of this line if the sand train workings were to continue and use a different path and coal movements were to happen to the works at Royston; possibly bringing back some of the traditional feel to the operation of the line. The Monk Bretton sand train is on the Middleton Towers to Redfearns Glassworks, 6E48 working and passing underneath, at about the same time, on the the non-electrified section of the old Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, is Northern Rail class 150, 150140, passenger train from Knottingley to Wakefield Kirkgate station, the 2F76 service. The GBRf sand train, class 66, 66748 is hauling the usual consist of WBB bulk aggregate mineral wagons and will stop at Monk Bretton loop where the loco runs round the consist and attaching to the rear of the wagons enabling it to reverse up the line, pushing the wagons into Redfearns works. When unloaded it then comes forward at around 19:40, back to the loop and continues on to Doncaster Roberts Road, working as 6D22; from there it returns to Middleton Towers for another load of sand.. and long may it continue! The map shown in the lower picture was drawn in around 1952 and shows the state of the junctions and lines and which railway companies owned them... a hotch-potch of companies and junctions with lines going every which-way, with the prime purpose of accessing the 'black gold' of the area now all removed or hidden in undergrowth and once again making testament to the past glories of the railways, when coal was king...

Note, 58035 was built by British Rail Engineering Limited at Doncaster works in 1985 for British Railways as number 58035, and was transferred to Mainline Freight Limited on 1st April 1995 as part of the privatisation of British Railways. Mainline Freight Limited was purchased by North and South Railways Limited on 24th February 1996, and the company’s assets were transferred to the English Welsh & Scottish Railway Limited on 14th October 1996. 58035 was placed in store on 2nd July 1999, and after preparation at Toton Traction Maintenance Depot between July and October 2004 it was moved through the Channel Tunnel to France on 27th October 2004 for hire to Fertis for use on engineering trains on the construction of the Ligne à Grande Vitesse Est line. UZABUS WINS KAPITI COAST BUS CONTRACT

A lot has been happening in the realm of our Greater Wellington Regional Council public transport services, with significant decisions being made in the past couple of weeks, and signals being sent on big discussions to be had in the months ahead - the biggest being the outcome of the two-year PTOM tender process.

The tender process identified Tranzit Group Ltd as the preferred bidder for eight contracts in the Wellington region, and UZABus as preferred bidder for a contract to deliver bus services on the Kapiti Coast. Both companies are locally-owned, family businesses with a proven record of running public transport.

The process considered many aspects of the service, including track record, employee welfare, customer service performance and the emissions profile of the fleets offered by tenderers, and will deliver value for money for ratepayers, taxpayers and fare payers.

UZABus is based in Palmerston North and was established in 1948. It already runs GWRC's Otaki service and also delivers services to the Bay of Plenty and Horizons Regional Councils. UZABus has an existing fleet of 280 buses.

Once negotiation is complete, Tranzit will hold 60 per cent ofthe market and UZABus will hold 6 per cent. The remaining market share will be held by the incumbent providers, NZ Bus (28 per cent) and Mana (6 per cent).

Timetables remain the same for now, with new buses and routes scheduled to be introduced in mid-2018.

As well, our Council intends to bring in a new package offare initiatives in mid-2018 to align with the new bus contracts and the extension of Snapper as an interim bus ticketing system.

 

On Wednesday, 31 May 2017, there will be a meeting of all of the Unions who represent Mana Coach Services and Newlands Coach Services bus drivers in the Northern Suburbs, Porirua and Kapiti operating areas.

This meeting is to allow all drivers to understand and discuss the impacts of the tender results. This does not mean that they are intending to strike.

As a result there may be impacts with travel on Mana and Newlands services:

- Normal timetables will run until approximately 8:45 am.

- Services that normally commence after 8:45 am and before 3:00 pm will not be running.

- Normal timetables will resume by approximately 3:00 pm.
