Three days in South Wales on a 1Z10 outing, main aim to bag some of the last coal workings on the freight only line to Cwm Bargoed; in fact, last coal anywhere in Wales for that matter.

Pete and I had missed the only working the previous day by a matter of a minute. So returning on the Friday, we were determined not to miss out again.

66089 lifts coal empties from Hope Cement works up the final few miles to the coal washery at Cwmbargoed, climbing steadily up through the steep sided old mining village of Bedlinog. Here the train is around halfway up the Taff Bargoed, its destination will be right at the head of the valley. The train has had a long journey, setting off at 23:44 the previous night from the cement works in the Peak District as train 4V01, its destination will be reached at 13:20. In just under two and a half hours the train will be loaded and on its way back to the Cement works. This may be a long journey, but many see the end has passed for UK mined coal. This is a valid point, on this autumnal day the temperatures reached eighteen degrees celcius. But so long as we build, we will use cement. And coal is used in its production. Where should it come from and how should it get here, in a bulk carrier from a huge hole in another continent whilst the corporates concerned wave carbon neutral flags in the air?

This is the only daylight freight train on this line per week.

Freightliner's #66545 powers her way through Barnetby station and approaches Wrawby Junction leading an eastbound coal train while #66089 waits for a path east with a train of coal destined for the steel works in Scunthorpe on the morning of Friday the 7th of September 2012.

I spent a few years living in and around Stockport while working at Mirrlees, leaving the area in 1973, but with a little time to spare while waiting to change trains I had a nostalgic stroll around an managed to grab this shot while the 636O 10.41 Knowsley Freight Terminal to Wilton Efw Terminal was crossing the viaduct behind DB 66089.

There have been changes. I think the large building on the right used to be a Co-op department store

Finding some brightness along the coastline during an eternally wet early summer, 66089 curves past Burnmouth just a couple of miles inside the Scottish Border with 4E96, the 09:00 Mossend Euroterminal to Tees Dock intermodal. June the 13th 2024. Needless to say, less than half a mile inland and the ceiling of grey was profound, giving to frequent heavy showers preceding constant rain.

I dragged Lorraine over here on our wedding anniversary to see 66004 'I Am A Climate Hero', which had worked this train the day before. Sadly, the locomotive had been removed from the train overnight & this turned up instead! Never mind. I'm sure I will catch up with 66004 soon.

Still no 'I'm A Climate Hero' on this train. I didn't know at the time, but I would finally have success with that locomotive the very next month.

DB Class 66089 waits for the relief driver to arrive to take 66089 onwards working 4M78 Soton W Docks Berth 109 to Trafford Park Euro Term. - 12/7/2021.

A couple of minutes prior to this shot I'd photographed 59101 going the other way in stunning, full strength, winter sunrise lighting. Naturally when 66089 came into view around Crofton curve with 6Z53, the 05:13 Tytherington - Appleford, the sun partly hid itself behind the few clouds anywhere near it. 2 minutes later the lighting was back to what it had been and didn't dip again for the whole day

DB Cargo Shed 66089 approaches Tamworth High Level in a rain shower hauling the 12.43pm Walsall Freight Terminal - Dowlow Briggs Sidings (6M82).

Most sensible folk are staying under the shelters keeping dry, including a few railfans who have migrated from the Low level station to see this and another freight pass on the High Level lines. It's great to see those red box wagons in action - they definitely brighten up the scene for the snapper.

This will be the last upload for a while ahead of a digital detox.

While DB continues to make inroads repainting its fleet of Class 66's into house colours, several examples still adorn the EWS livery from delivery. One such scruffy locomotive, 66089, heads west through March, Cambridgeshire on the 8th August 2022. The GM machine is hauling a rake of empty MMA wagons from Chesterton Sidings to Toton North Yard.

Well folks, the first sighting of this working in daylight is usually around April, as it travels through Rutland and Northants around 06.30 most mornings.

Luckily I tracked it today, and there may have been a problem with the Lickey Banker as it lost over two hours at Bromsgrove.

So, there were 51 steel coils on the 6M94 Margam - Corby train on this day - pity it was not a red loco though.

The sunflowers were not as pretty as they were back in the autumn of 2021 (see below), but at least they acted as 'markers' and I found the lens cap that I dropped in the field back then.

The sky started to clear soon after the train had passed, so I waited a while to capture it and replaced it with something a little more pleasing on the eye.

66089 E @ TEES YARD , Sunday 01st March 2015

DB 66089 passing through Melton Mowbray at speed with the 670M 1034 Corby B.S.C. to Margam empty steel carriers. Normally this train waits in the loop for the Crosscountry passenger to pass, but was running a few minutes late and was allowed to run ahead. Caught me out!

Was hoping for the green one but sadly that got replaced by a normal EWS 66089. Seen at Brentingby working the 4L38 1057 East Midlands Gateway - Felixstowe 23/9/21.

I had hoped that 'I'm A Climate Hero' would be on this train, but sadly not to be.

The dreaded lineside vegetation is now starting to cause problems at my favourite spot on this section of line & I must admit, I'm getting rather depressed with this ever increasing problem for a ground level photographer like me. I will never switch to pole photography. I know it's popular with other railway photographers & I love to see their work, but I'm not tempted to try it myself. Thankfully, there are still some locations where I can take some decent shots from the ground. However, if the number of viable ground level spots continue to dwindle, I will probably pack the railway photography in & concentrate on landscape.
