I grew up in the small town of Port Credit, Ontario, Canada (population approximately 10,000 during the 1960’s). We lived on a dead end street…a block from Lake Ontario and two houses from a forest. Joe lived…5 doors down.
I didn’t know Joe very well. I was 4 years old when we moved there and he was MUCH older…12 at the time. We didn’t hang out but I do remember we played baseball, football, hide and seek, tag, and most important of all…road hockey. Joe was there during my FIRST road hockey game…my “Canadian baptism”. I’m sure it was uneventful for him, but not for me. So…I remember Joe. Joe lived 5 doors down.
Like most Canadian kids I loved playing road hockey until well into the night…long after the thermometer slid well below zero. Snow, ice and numbness of limbs only made it more fun. We’d go home only after our mothers called us for the 3rd and last time. I’d watch Joe go home. Joe lived 5 doors down.
I didn’t go to Joe’s home very often, but I do remember he called us into his basement once and showed us some films. To this day I remember the episode of “Popeye” that I watched in Joe’s home…5 doors down.
I remember Joe’s parents. His mother made the best caramel apples in the world. Each and every Halloween I would make a beeline to Joe’s home to get my share of those treats. I was lucky I lived nearby…5 doors down.
Before too long, we didn’t see much of Joe. He went to high school, started dating, and then…went off to college…and moved away. His parents remained…5 doors down.
I too grew up (well…physically anyways)…went to school…started dating…got married…and moved away. Joe’s parents passed away several years ago and others now live in Joe’s old home…5 doors down.
I never forgot Joe…but to be honest with you…I didn’t think of him often until a few years ago when I picked up a newspaper and read his name. Joe was working on the 102nd floor in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He was one of 24 Canadians killed in the terrorist attacks. Like so many others…a piece of my childhood died that day…with the boy who once lived…5 doors down.
Dedicated to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks…especially my boyhood neighbour…Joseph Collison…who lived 5 doors down. This was his home.

A new edit of an 8x10 negative of Sorbus leaves.
Initial intent was for a horizontal 4x10 crop, as previously posted. Now, vertical panoramic strips seem like a great idea, since the image has too much detail and chaos to take in as one single 8x10 image, but I wanted to show more.

- Neben den sich stetig wandelnden, gesprochenen Sprachen gibt es die in Stein gehauene, ewige Bildsprache. Die Tempelanlage des Borobudur ist rundherum mit tausenden von Einzelbildern versehen, die ohne Worte das Leben und die Lehren Buddhas beschreiben. –
Als die Frau mit großem Gepäck mein Zugabteil betrat, legte ich das Reise-Magazin auf meinem Nebensitz ab und half der jungen Frau, die sich als Sandra vorstellte, beim Verstauen ihrer Koffer und Reisetaschen.
„Das sind nicht alles meine Sachen“, entschuldigte sie sich. „Ich reise einer Freundin hinterher, der man den Koffer geklaut hat. Der arme Dieb.“
Ich sah sie neugierig an als wir uns setzten und sie lächelte zurück.
„Sie haben mein Interesse geweckt“, sagte ich. „Wie kann ich das mit dem armen Dieb verstehen?“
„Schlechtes Karma“, entgegnete Sandra, während der Zug ins Rollen kam.
Ich musste unweigerlich nicken und sie fragte mich, ob ich an Karma glaube. Das Gesetz von Ursache und Wirkung leuchtete mir ein, daher bestätigte ich ihre Frage mit einem klaren Ja.
„Meine Freundin glaubt immer noch an das Gute im Menschen“, sagte Sandra. „Dafür wird sie alle paar Monate beklaut. Sogar auf einem heiligen Platz, vor zwei Jahren. Wir waren da, zusammen. In Indonesien. Kennen Sie den Borobudur Tempel?“
Ich war verblüfft über diese Synchronizität, verwies auf das Reise-Magazin welches ich gerade zuvor gelesen hatte und hörte nun von Sandra, dass ihre Freundin direkt vor der bewachten Tempelanlage bestohlen worden sei. Sandra fragte: „Lauert das Böse immer in der Nähe des Guten?“
Sie hatte bereits erwähnt, dass sie sich sehr für buddhistische Philosophie interessiere, weil sie ein Fan von Schopenhauer sei. Der deutsche Philosoph hatte Anfang des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts den Buddhismus in den deutschen Ländern bekannt gemacht.
„Ich glaube, Schopenhauer hat recht“, fuhr Sandra fort. „Im Zeichen von Yin und Yang sind schwarz und weiß untrennbar miteinander verbunden. Der Taube fliegt der Falke hinterher.“
Wiederum nickte ich und wunderte mich über die bildreiche Sprache der jungen Frau. Auf eine diesbezügliche Frage antwortete sie: „Ein Mönch erläuterte uns einige der in Stein gehauenen Bilder. Er sagte, er pilgere seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren regelmäßig zum Tempel, denn er mache Zeichnungen und gebe schriftliche Deutungen der Botschaften aus der Dimension des Geistes. Der Geist vermittelt seine Botschaften in Bildern, in Geschichten. Es sind Botschaften der Befreiung des Geistes von den Illusionen, die er sich selbst geschaffen hat.“ Sandra lächelte. „Das ist nicht auf meinem Mist gewachsen, das hat mir der Mönch erzählt.“

I have been on YouTube for 5 Years. It doesn't seem that long. well, I guess by judging how bad my first video was, Review on Lego Star Wars AT-AP Walker, it was.
So this photo shows the interests that I have held over the past years on being on YouTube and Flickr. It's been a great 5 years so far, and maybe we can make it another 5. These past months on YouTube have been rough since I haven't been getting much publicity or receiving as many comments, likes, and subscribers that I would have liked, but oh well. Hopefully this year turns around to the bright side.
If you are tagged in ht photo, then that means that you have been a huge inspiration to me on this journey, and will continue to be. Also, you could be a good friend that I have met over YouTube and Flickr.

While trying to take photos of the various butterflies that were coming to the flowering plants on the south side of the swimming pool in the gated community that I live in, I was startled to see a blue female bluet damselfly coming to feed on small bugs living around the flowering plants. The closest place that has any type of habitat for breeding bluets is at least 1/2 mile away. I suspect that this female damsel is a Familiar Bluet but I will post it on Western Odonata in Facebook and see what the experts have to say.
