I was walking around Flowertown Park in Summerville today, hoping to find someone to photograph. I didn't hold out much hope, as most of the time when I walk that park, I don't run into anyone I want to take pictures of. But, lady luck was with me today.
As I rounded the corner of the path, I see this handsome fellow taking pictures of himself. I thought that was a good sign! He had a Canon camera mounted on one tripod, and I think it was wirelessly tethered to his phone on another tripod so he could see himself. It was a pretty nice setup.
I got to talkng photography with Mal for a few minutes. He said that he had only been shooting for about two years, and didn't consider himself a photographer. I say I consider anyone shooting with this type of setup a photographer in my book! I would love to see some of the pictures you have taken, Mal. And maybe you might even think about joining the Flickr 100 Strangers group. It's an awesome group, and a great place to grow your knowledge!
Mal had a rugged, powerful look about him. The first thing that hit my little klunker is that I wanted to shoot him low to give him a more powerful look. I also wanted a little more of a dramatic look to set off his features, so I wanted to split the light (sun on one side, shadow on the other). I kind of wish I had gotten him to cross his arms in front of his chest, but otherwise than that I like the way this turned out.
Mal, it was really nice chatting with you today. You seem like such a kind-hearted person. I hope you like this portrait of you, and I hope you keep shooting too! Have a very happy New Year!

Today, I learned the truth in the saying; it doesn't matter what people say about you, it's what you say about yourself that matters... :o)
