Alva Church (Swedish: Alva kyrka) is a medieval Lutheran church on the Swedish island of Gotland, in the Diocese of Visby (Sweden).

The oldest parts of the church are the late Romanesque choir and the apse, dating from the late 12th century. To this the nave was added during the late part of the same century. Construction of the broad tower started about a hundred years later but was never finished; hence the somewhat squat appearance of the church today. It seems in fact that construction of the church came to a rapid end: apart from the half-finished tower, the main southern portal also seems to have been finished in a haphazard, chaotic way.

The choir portal is Romanesque in style and carried some sculpted reliefs, possibly executed by the locally active Master Sigraf. The likewise Romanesque northern portal of the church is also decorated with sculptures.

Inside, the church displays a set of frescos carried out at the end of the Middle Ages, probably just before the reformation and possibly by the same artist who decorated Lau Church. Among the furnishings, the dominating triumphal cross, dating from the middle of the 13th century, and a partly preserved baptismal font, executed by the Romanesque master carver Hegvald sometime during the end of the 12th century, are especially notable. The pulpit dates from 1740 and the unusually decorated altarpiece from 1653.

The church was renovated in 1953–54.

A Történet:

We hit the strip! The casinos that I recall going to are as follows: The Mirage (saw a Bengal tiger behind the glass, marking his territory by rubbing his chin glands on everything), Flamingo (to see the feeding time of the penguins outside), Barbary Coast where the fattest Elvis ever was performing (so fat he couldn't heft his Elvisey bulk from a chair in front of the stage), The Aladdin, The Bellagio, The MGM Grand (complete with lions in a glass cage for your amusement!), and The Tropicana. What happened in Vegas stays in Vegas. But I can talk of how John Kerry just happened to be there when we were trying to bus down to the strip, so the buses were delayed an hour. By this point, we were hot and our feet hurt so we bussed it home.

But we came out later to go back to The MGM Grand to hit Studio 54, which was one of the better clubbing experiences I have had. (That honor goes to the now-defunct 1470s's Heaven Vs. Hell a few years ago.) Now, I thought that, this being Las Vegas, they'd be used to people dressing up kinda different or goth. Not. At All. I'll say it again, since it bears repeating. Not. At. All. I wore a typical goth outfit of mine ("cyborg" shirt, vinyl skirt, fishnets, knee-high Docs) but I might as well have walked around stark naked for all the reactions I was getting. Whistles, comments and stares from dirty (and not so dirty), old (and not so old), men (and women...but only the stares so far as I noticed). And in the club, people either assumed that A)I worked there, B)I was a DJ, or C)I was on drugs. Everyone where was dressed as for The Cheese back in Athens, and there were dancers on raised platforms and who descended from the ceiling on harnesses and trapezes who were the only ones dressed like I was, although showing more skin. The last two times I got an unusual amount of attention when I went out were Goth Night spring quarter freshman year at OU, and Heaven Vs. Hell......and (besides being one of eight finalists for Sexiest Devil contest at 1470s), this surpassed them all. It was flattering enough, but it kinda really threw me, too. Thank god this happened the last night, because I don't think I could have handled any more.

We got back to the hostel at 4 AM, and the crowning touch was a Swedish boy who was just checking in, who knew barely enough English to get by. He was eating a candy apple that he had stolen, and the broken-English version of the story is just too funny. You had to be there to fully appreciate it, though.

SONNET LIV

O! how much more doth beauty beauteous seem

By that sweet ornament which truth doth give.

The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem

For that sweet odour, which doth in it live.

The canker blooms have full as deep a dye

As the perfumed tincture of the roses,

Hang on such thorns, and play as wantonly

When summer's breath their masked buds discloses:

But, for their virtue only is their show,

They live unwoo'd, and unrespected fade;

Die to themselves. Sweet roses do not so;

Of their sweet deaths are sweetest odours made:

And so of you, beauteous and lovely youth,

When that shall vade, my verse distills your truth.
