This was one of several bamboo vipers (Trimereserus stejnegeri /Viridovipera stejnegeri stejnegeri) we spotted on this road, initially hunting, and then when we returned, eating a Swinhoe's japalura (Japalura swinhonis).

A volcano in SW Iceland that last erupted in 2000. It appears to be getting ready to erupt again soon. Europeans once called this volcano the gateway to hell.

The weather forecast looked promising this past week and I thought I'd take chance and go see the sunrise somewhere in the south part of the island of Florianópolis. There were many clounds and it was hard to predict what would happen as the sun started to rise. It was a sunrise unlike any I had seen before. And a rather interesting one I should say. The picture above shows a rock formation and the way water hits it, shaping its form through the passing of time.

The recent eruption of Kilauea in Hawaii is making me rather unnerving as I will be heading to Big Island in about a week. Originally, I was not expecting to see any good volcanic activity. Now, it looks like I will be in for a real treat. On the other hand, I am really torn to see homes got destroyed along the lava paths in Puna. I am praying for the local residents there and really hope that the eruption would eventually subsided so that they can go back to their homes. I 've heard from the news that there were 27 homes destroyed so far. But today, they have just discovered another two new fissures puking out lava. In any case, I will be staying in Kona which is about 100 miles away from the epic center. Nevertheless, I am more concern about earthquakes and tsunami .So I will need to exercise some caution when I get there.
Anyway, this photo was taken many years ago. We did reach to the dead end of the road in the lava field of Kilauea. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and didn't hike to see the magma. So I decided to go back this time even though our mainstay would be in Maui. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is simply amazing and is quite unique among all other National Parks in the US.

This was an ECS working York to Doncaster purely for driver familiarisation on the new traction Type.
I had driven the train, under instruction York-Peterborough-York-Doncaster.
I qualified on the train type the following day on 800113.
To date, I am qualified on fourteen traction types. 08's, 31's, 37's, 43(HST)47's,56's.60's, 66's,67's,86's, 90's 91's, 325 emu's and 800/801 Azuma.
For my generation of senior drivers, these trains are radically different from the locomotives we started our careers on 30-40 years ago.
Other classes I have driven ( not qualified on but under instruction) include 03/11/20/25/26/27/40/45/55/57/58/ 101 and 122 DMU( 55012 ) also 142003( when brand new) also a 156 DMU.
Of all types, the Brush Type Four ( Class 47's), remain my favourite locomotives to work on. Although to date I haven't worked on one since 22nd September 2003 (47760)
800101-113 are the 9 coach Bi Mode ( either electric or diesel powered). These can therefore work all the routes that LNER operate over.
Most of the new LNER Azuma fleet are electric only powered, therefore are limited only travelling where OHL are present.
When qualifying on class 800's a driver is automatically qualified on class 801's too. Very little differences exist between the two.
Thanks to Driver Trainer John for taking this image.

Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, encapsulating the South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile (1.6 km) in thickness.
