Nach über 44 Dienstjahren verabschiedet sich die Triebfahrzeugreihe 1044/1144 nun zunehmend in den Ruhestand, in etwa die Hälfte der erstgebauten Serie mit den niedrigen Lüftergittern ist bereits aus dem Einsatzbestand ausgeschieden. Entsprechend wurde auch das Einsatzgebiet der 1144 von den internationalen Langläufen bzw. Schnellzügen weg hin zum Vorspann- bzw. Nachschiebedienst an den Bergstrecken sowie im Wendezugbetrieb im Nahverkehr verändert. An einem astreinen Julimorgen schiebt 1144 028 den voll beladenen Ganzzug über die Tauern-Südrampe empor bis zum Bahnhof Mallnitz-Obervellach.
