The Day Gas roars through Plains on a crisp and gorgeous morning in northwestern Montana.

Reflecting on pictures from the MRL, yearning to go back. Two weeks ago was supposed to be my grand finale out there... couldn't make it, and good thing I didn't. The big derailment interrupted the blue pullers.

Perhaps in August, when the sun angle is better it'll be back to "normal". Hopefully there isn't a ton of fires.

When the Night Gas takes the 4th out of Missoula is always a treat. Certainly the 10th Sub is amazing, but there are so many more shots I would love to get along the 10th.

From last year, the night gas got signals to head out the 4th. A leisurely chase ensued. Not every shot was had because they had a clear shot. Even with the freeway, you have to plan ahead for your shots. These trains fly with no opposing traffic.

Night Gas local out near Perma, MT along the Flathead River

The Night Gas coasts through Evaro after tackling the climb up Evaro Hill out of Missoula. Unfortunately the train would travel in almost complete cloud cover, as has been the norm for the last several trips I've made out here.

The night gas is taking in the last few minutes of light as a spotless ACe leads a sister under the cantilevers that have stood for many years protecting train movements.

The mountains along the Clark Fork River, which the MRL mainline runs along, are an almost indescribable experience. Especially in the evenings and mornings when the shadows paint the mountains various shades of green and blue. Would love to live out there, but not makes each trip out there very meaningful.

Cambodia, Mekong river, Fishermen

Making good time along the river, the day gas is already heading back east towards Missoula around 10:30 or so.

If there were one place I wish I could move, it would be within 50 miles of here.

The Day Gas is quickly approaching their western trek of Pipeline at Thompson Falls where they'll swap loads for empties.

My OCD appreciated this train... all white tankers. When I got my first hit of the MRL, there were only white tankers. After a mishap where several tankers found their way to a resting position perpendicular of what they're supposed to sit... a lot of black GATX tankers showed up.

I hope no one takes my OCD as some type of passive racism... it is simply my appreciation for symmetry. It takes way back to unit oil tank trains. They should be all the same color car, the same goes for grain trains. They should all be brown if BNSF.

There's a challenge in shooting the MRL in the summer... haze from wildfire smoke. Fortunately, I was early enough in the season that there wasn't that much. Today, this shot would probably have the majority of the mountains shielded by wildfire smoke.

If everything aligns, I will be able to make another trip to the MRL soon. Hopefully the skies are as clear as they were this day.

Greylag goose

Scientific name

Anser anser

Our commonest native goose, the greylag goose can be very territorial while nesting, chasing other geese and large birds away from its nesting site. Greylag geese become sociable again once the chicks have hatched, with several families of goslings sometimes grouping together. Greylag geese have short bills and prefer to graze pasture and meadows where cattle or sheep are grazing. They will also take grain, root crops and leafy vegetation.

JAAROVERZICHT 2022

The Night Gas is skirting the Clark Fork as they are closing in on their final stretches of their trip to Thompson Falls.

A textbook perfect evening was had on this trip.

Thanks for all visits and comments

The night gas with Paradise power and cars get ready to tackle Evaro Hill just west of Missoula. I've wanted this shot for a while, glad I finally glassed it. Would like another try with a longer train... but from the sounds of it longer trains typically don't make this trek.

The Day Gas is quickly highballing out of T-Falls. Unfortunately this shot is much harder now that the fencing along the highway is up.

White Heron ( Egretta sancta )

After the first few hurried shots this bird moved into an area with lovely backlight, walking purposefully toward me a few metres then flew off and I watched it go way off into the distance...

leaving me feeling quite privileged yet alone.......

Starlings feeding energetically on the Essex marshes.

Quite a small part of the image so it would never print but it works well enough as a Flickr sticker.

Thank you all for such lovely comments. I liked it but independent views are always valuable.

The Night Gas (with the Paradise power and cars in tow) rolls out of Jocko on a gorgeous evening. Montana is calling...

A spotless MRL 4408 leads the day gas back to Missoula after swapping out cars at Thompson Falls. The unit was used on a special over Mullan last weekend and still looks awesome after a few runs on the gas train.
