EYMS Mercedes Vario 0814/Plaxton Beaver 2 MX51MUP (419) seen arriving at Spurn Point with the 12:03 73 "Spurn Ranger" from Withernsea.
Spurn Point is more or less a sandbank extending from the "mainland" at Kilnsea, a settlement exists at the southern end arising from the construction of a lifeboat station in 1810 while the area was also utilised for defense purposes in both wars. Indeed, such matters led to the construction of a railway between Kilnsea and Spurn Point in 1915 and though this was closed in 1952 rails can be identified in various places while the site of the former engine shed is viewable just behind the lighthouse. The road itself is sprinkled with sand and amounts to little more than cobbles across the dunes in places, it is susceptible to slipping as evidenced by the fact that its course has changed several times over the years, in fact it was recently closed for a period as a result of damage by the tide.
There has been a lighthouse here since 1674, the current structure was built in 1895 though it has now been disused for over 20 years.
The 73 operates 4 journeys in both directions on Sundays and Bank Holidays between the end of April and the end of October, it is the only bus service to reach Spurn though the Mon-Sat 71 does cover large parts of the route.
Withernsea based 419 is one of two Varios in the EYMS fleet, the other being the one other vehicle from the order, 418, based in Hull and mainly used on the Hessle town service between school runs. 419 replaced ex Frodingham breadvan P174NAK (EY 417) on the 73 for the 2010 season, the vehicle used on this service generally appears to be delicensed and left at Withernsea depot over the winter and during its sabbatical between last season and this 419 has gained branding for the service.
While the infamous ride quality of the Vario would no doubt be very evident on the uneven road, I'm doubtful as to whether a low floor vehicle could be used on this service without grounding in multiple places.
