Manchester Victoria Banker super power. A Class 40 stands wide-eyed and ready to be called to duty alongside the through roads between platforms 11 and 12 at Manchester Victoria.
Tom Heavyside in his superb colour album 'On Lancashire and Yorkshire Lines' notes that for many decades locomotives would stand in the 'Wallside' siding in order to bank eastbound trains up the steep Miles Platting incline and on page 6 includes a picture taken in 1961 of a L&YR 3F 0-6-0.
During the 1970s BR Sulzer Type 2s were often noted on this turn of duty but on this occasion super power was provided in the shape and form of a Class 40.

A then-new Flyer D901A is about to take the ext from the Kennedy Expressway spur (I-190) to River Road. It will stop at the River Road (now Rosemont) station.
The #40 O'harexpress route had a rather convoluted history. In 1970, the former Logan Square 'L' line was extended from its namesake station to Jefferson Park. The route #40 O'Harexpress bus route was created to connect Jefferson Park with O'Hare International Airport. In the early 1980s construction began on extending the rapid transit route to O'Hare with a targeted completion date to be in 1983.
That didn't happen. The line was completed only as far as River Road (Rosemont). Completion to O'Hare finally occurred a year later in 1984. In the meantime, the #40 O'Harexpress was revised to a River Road-O'Hare route.
