Is what it is.

Give the people the air.

This was gone in a minute due to some asshole painting a toy robot smack in the middle. Really don't understand the toy mentality sometimes, but then I relate them to children.

Took this picture Friday (Oct. 8, 2021) while on my way to Stockton CA. Bonneville Salt Flats, west of the Great Salt Lake, Utah. Ran into first snow of the year about 100 miles west of here in Nevada. Wasn't much, just a couple of inches which had fallen before I got there, so pretty much just a little slush.

I'm doing fine, other than working my ass off. Near Portland Oregon right now, have a delivery at 2230, the back to our terminal to grab another loaded trailer and deliver it at 0300. Only about 100 miles total driving between the two deliveries, just ugly hours. Then picking up a load tomorrow evening at 1800 and headed to Central California to deliver that one Wednesday at 0500.

I'm planning to retire in June unless my 401K and stock investments tank. So far I'm in pretty good shape despite crazy market gyrations. Up over 4K today, mostly due to my SOFI stocks going up over 10%. My other favorite stock is Palantir PLTR. I've been actively trading stocks this year and up over 20%. Tried day trading when I had a day off, did terrible and lost a little over $900. Swing trading has been pretty successful so far, winning more than losing. Earlier this year I was down over 30K, but knew Palantir would turn around. Took about two and a half months, but my conviction finally paid off and now up over 15K just with swing trading PLTR. Enough stock talking, needless to say I enjoy trading stocks and looking forward to retirement to do more and hopefully helping to fund my retirement.

Still doing photography, not as much, but still stop when I see an opportunity to capture something interesting to me, like this stormy scene over the salt flats. Once retired planning to do a lot more photography and traveling without the crappy schedule of trucking.

I've been healthy, fully vaccinated despite all the political noise over vaxed or non-vaxed. For me, the risk from the vaccine versus not getting vaccinated was a no brainer. My daughter the "covid" nurse, son-in-law and three grandchildren just had covid. Wasn't severe, only a few days feeling like crap for the adults. The grandchildren tested positive but never showed and symptoms. My 88 year old mom, is doing great, vaxed and still working out everyday with her Comrade Jane Fonda work out videos. Brad her little dog is grown up, still small and according to her, a good little bed buddy.

Feel guilty posting knowing I'll only have time to visit a few of you. But posting for anyone wondering if I'm still alive, just wanted to let you know I am. I do miss all of you. Just busy making as much money as I can before retirement. Huge shortage of truck drivers, so they're paying us more and keeping us very busy.

I have tons of pictures to post, so once I'm retired pretty sure everyone will get sick of me and my comments. lol, hopefully not.

you know it's a pretty bad addiction when you stop and take a picture of your car while at the ATM....from my Mustang archives, on a storage drive that we had all thought was dead , but hooked up to a new computer is back to life... @ 3000 shots recovered!!!

This is a photo of our Siamese cat Gabriella who is permanently attached to me when I'm in my office. She works diligently helping to catalogue images or tending to her WiFi administrative responsibilities. I have a 401K program for both her and CPII and they are saving nicely for their retirement years. You can tell by the look in her eyes that she is extremely ambitions and takes her work very seriously. -:)

We have a tendency to underestimate the role our daily choices play in our lives. It is just as important to start investing our time in choices we make from early age as in 401K.

[29/52]

Back in June, we took a trip to Oahu in Hawaii for a family vacation together before my sister gets married this fall. Our last day on the island, I woke up with the sun to escape with my thoughts.

The beach outside of our hotel, usually packed with tourists sunbathing on striped towels, was calm and quiet in the morning stillness. Surfers chanted prayers under their breath before paddling out into the glow of the blue dawn.

I sat on the cool, damp sand for a minute basking in the peace of the scene in front of me. Then, all at once, the sun washed vivid pastel colors onto the sky, breathing life into the day.

This morning was a blank slate, as every other is. A fresh chance to start over...a new beginning.

________________________

Today marks the start of my first official week as a full time entrepreneur. No more desk job. I can't tell you how many times I've imagined myself in this moment, typing out these exact words. It's absolutely terrifying and exhilirating at the same time.

For so much of my life, I've played it safe. Though I may not have realized it at the time, the definition of sucess that has carried me through much of my youth was me trying to live up to other people's expectations of me. And you know what? It has never made me happy. If anything, it's made me feel like a shell of who I really am...who I want to be.

There may be some of you out there right now shaking your heads at me— and that's ok. I've heard it all before. "Photography isn't a real job, it's just a hobby. Most businesses fail in the first five years. Self-employment is too hard for most people. She's never going to make enough money to support herself. How's she going to afford X,Y and Z? She won't be successful. She's not good enough."

Some of these opinions have been voiced out loud to me but, for the most part, this is the reel of self doubt that has played over and over again in my head for the past several years. Fear has kept me paralyzed in jobs I hate, trying to please everyone except myself.

I know it's going to be hard. Stepping away from a safety net always is. I know there are going to be days when I question why I didn't chose a more "lucrative" career path that will offer financial stability, a company paid health insurance plan, a 401K, etc.

I also know I don't want to look back on my life and wonder "what if" because I was too afraid to take a chance on something I love. I'm finally brave enough to fail...to make mistakes. You can call me a romantic, an angsty artist, a naive girl, or whatever you please. It doesn't matter. All that matters is I'm ready to fight for this and give it everything I've got.

I want to thank everyone out there who has supported me from the beginning. I can never begin to express to you how much even the simple gestures, like following my work on here, giving an image a like, or passing my name on to a friend as a referral means to me. I believe I can do this only because you believed in me first.

And thank you to those who have doubted me too. You've helped me conquer my inner demons and given me the motivation I needed to move forward and never look back.

For those of you out there who find yourselves in a struggle between your head and your heart, I leave you with this:

"There is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." - Nelson Mandela

Every day is a blank slate and a chance to do whatever it is that makes you happy.

All I can say

Is that my life is pretty plain

I like watchin' the puddles gather rain

And all I can do

Is just pour some tea for two

And speak my point of view

But it's not sane,

It's not sane

I just want someone to say to me,

"I'll always be there when you wake."

You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today

So stay with me and I'll have it made (I'll have it made)

And I don't understand why I sleep all day

And I start to complain

That there's no rain

And all I can do is read a book to stay awake

And it rips my life away,

But it's a great escape

Escape... escape... escape...

All I can say

Is that my life is pretty plain

You don't like my point of view

You think that I'm insane

It's not sane... it's not sane.

Had me a good job, and a little house, for the first time in my life

But I lost the job, they shipped it over seas

I call up my banker, but he don't wanna hear from me

Ain't got no house, foreclosed

Ain't got no car, repossessed

Ain't got no 401K, stock market crash

Ain't got no pension, Chapter 11...

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of one of the core members of the Grove Art Center family, Barbara Collazo.

I did not know her closely, but I was fortunate to help her on one of her Grove projects, a real pro & and a pleasure to work with.

I know many people in her inner circle are devastated by her loss. I have never met a nicer bunch of people that share the love SL photography than the Grove family & I know the pain is real.

To Wren and all my friends in the Grove family a big hug of love from this old crusty hermit!

RIP Barb, you are loved & will be missed. šŸ’

From Wren:

We are celebrating Barbara Collazo's life with a lovely, cheerful garden reception at Boschetto Villaggio at The Grove Country Club Estates, where she enjoyed teaching so many of us.

All are welcome to join:

Some bright morning when this life is over

I'll fly away

To that home on God's celestial shore

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away, in the morning

When I die, Hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone

I'll fly away

Like a bird from these prison walls I'll fly

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away, in the morning

When I die, Hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

Oh, how glad and happy when we meet

I'll fly away

No more cold iron shackles on my feet

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away, in the morning

When I die, Hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away, in the morning

When I die, Hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then

I'll fly away

To a land where joys will never end

I'll fly away

I'll fly away, fly away, oh glory

I'll fly away, in the morning

When I die, Hallelujah by and by

I'll fly away

I'll fly away

Ah! Ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow

From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow

The hammer of the gods

Will drive our ships to new lands

To fight the horde, sing and cry

Valhalla, I am coming

On we sweep with threshing oar

Our only goal will be the western shore

Ah! Ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow

From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow

How soft your fields so green

Can whisper tales of gore

Of how we calmed the tides of war

We are your overlords

On we sweep with threshing oar

Our only goal will be the western shore

So now you'd better stop

And rebuild all your ruins

For peace and trust can win the day

Despite of all your losing

EXPLORE: December 10, 2008. December sunset on the ice. Life really is good inspite of the world wide recession & poverty, 6.7% U.S. unemployment and rising, 201K plans instead of 401K plans, crashing stock markets around the globe, bank failures, housing forclosures, failing auto companies, government bailouts and world wars and conflicts. What is this strange boring thing I hear you say!

While wandering around the Stem and Vine Plant Nursery (in this case, nursery being the operative word) I came across these pot plants with sticks obviously being propagated (born) and realised that sooner or later they would grow leaves and become the ubiquitous Happy Plants. I added to my store of knowledge as I have never seen them starting out before. Happy Plants are a bit like the stock market, they have had their highs and lows and having not seen any for a few years, seem to have been in a bear market. Let's hope they grow well and a new bull market develops and after the hammering to all who are saving for or in retirement (superannuation in Australia, 401k in the US I think etc. etc.) or otherwise investing in almost anything right now, any good news would be welcome. Oops, off on a bit of a tangent but that is life for everyone, everywhere right now. Trying to pay the bills and stay afloat.

It's the weekend, so everyone have a pleasant few days, hopefully peaceful or productive as needs be. Oh yes, catching up on a couple of "unusual" shots today.

Happy Happy Plant Saturday

New Note: In the film, The Great Dictator renonces his dictatorship in the final speech of the movie. Sadly in RL dictators never toss off their uniform jacket of tyranny and fade into the sunset to play golf.

My dear friend Iris Okiddo turned me on this home movie from the orignal film production, really an awesome look at of 1939 Hollywood!

šŸŽ„[Rare Colour Footage - On the set of The Great Dictator]šŸŽ„

Ok a little back story.

A few weeks ago I attended a historical one man show (a Chautauqua), the person depicted was Charlie Chaplin in 1945, with him speaking a fair amount his 1940 film "The Great Dictator". I have been catching a few these shows with different historical figures over the last year, this one was the most impressive one to date.

Admittedly I don't believe I have seen the whole film, but I have had seen stills, and a clip or two. So for 1st time I caught his final speech in the film........ OMFG!.... With all thats happing around the glob, the parallels are just insane!

My normal way of doing things is find a song as my titles, I decided no music, just the words of Chaplin's moving and inspiring final speech of the film.

If you have not see seen this clip, do yourself a favor to replenish your soul, with this 3 minutes & 35 seconds of complete and moving brilliance.

Again I cannot say how awesome it is to shoot on The Continental Club sim. I shot this in Manor next to hotel.

"In the name of democracy, let us all unite!"

Peace Out!

šŸŽ„[The Great Dictator Final Speech (Charlie Chaplin)] šŸŽ„

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish…

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: ā€œthe Kingdom of God is within manā€ - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite!

šŸŽ¶[Girls From Texas (Ry Cooder)] šŸŽ¶

Well, I met a girl from Texas 'bout a year ago

Hadn't known her for too long when I had to let her go

You see, she had a razor, was ten inches or so

And every night you'd hear her knocking at my door

She said, "Baby, I'll give you the clothes on my back

You can have everything that I've got in my shack

But if you ever try to leave they'll take your out in sack

'Cause me and my razor will see to that"

That's the way the girls are from Texas

That's the way the girls are from Texas

That's the way the girls are from Texas

I thought about my situation, decided not to tarry

For my own self preservation I decided we should marry

When the preacher started reading 'bout till death do us part

I told him, "Skip it, we had that understanding right from the start"

That's the way the girls are from Texas

That's the way the girls are from Texas (Houston to San Antone)

That's the way the girls are from Texas (Got to love 'em right or leave 'em alone)

Well, we settled down, got me a little old job, '65 Fairlane Ford

Every Friday night I would stop in and cash my pay check down at the grocery store

They had a little girl worked in there, must have been about seventeen

She was the cutest thing I had ever seen

It's the same old story and I'm afraid it wasn't too very long

Before we had fallen deeply in love and I knew it was wrong

I said baby, we got to stop this thing right here

Or my woman is gonna cut my throat from ear to ear, that's right

In tearful supplication, she looked up in my face

I could feel her heart was breaking as these sad words she did say

"You should have told me you was married, baby

She pulled out a forty-five and let me have it, right smack between the eyes

That's the way the girls are from Texas

That's the way the girls are from Texas

That's the way the girls are from Texas

She was guilty, I was dead

Now, what'd you think that the old judge said?

"Ah, that's just the way the girls are down here in Texas

Case dismissed!"

That's the way the girls are from Texas

That's the way the girls are from Texas (Houston to San Antone)

That's the way the girls are from Texas (Got to love 'em right or leave 'em alone, boy)

One is to love your neighbor 'til

His wife gets home

Winter women

Growing stones

To the river

Streets and shoes

Who has wrestled before

With lions in the night

Out of sight!

The lights are getting brighter

The radio is moaning

Calling to the dogs

There are still a few animals

Left out in the yard

But it's getting harder

To describe sailors

To the underfed

Tropic corridor

Tropic treasure

What got us this far

To this mild equator?

We need someone or something new

Something else to get us through, yeah, come on

Calling on the dogs

Calling on the dogs

Oh, it's getting harder

Calling on the dogs

Calling in the dogs

Calling all the dogs

Calling on the gods

You got to meet me

Too late, baby

Slay a few animals

At the crossroads

Too late

All in the yard

But it's getting harder

By the crossroads

You got to meet me

Oh, we're going, we're going great

At the edge of town

Tropic corridor

Tropic treasure

Having a good time

Got to come along

What got us this far

To this mild equator?

Outskirts of the city

You and I

We need someone new

Something new

Something else to get us through

Better bring your gun

Better bring your gun

Tropic corridor

Tropic treasure

We're going to ride and have some fun

When all else fails

We can whip the horse's eyes

And make them sleep

And cry

With lions in the night

Out of sight!

The lights are getting brighter

The radio is moaning

Calling to the dogs

There are still a few animals

Left out in the yard

But it's getting harder

To describe sailors

To the underfed

Tropic corridor

Tropic treasure

What got us this far

To this mild equator?

We need someone or something new

Something else to get us through, yeah, come on

Calling on the dogs

Calling on the dogs

Oh, it's getting harder

Calling on the dogs

Calling in the dogs

Calling all the dogs

Calling on the gods

You got to meet me

Too late, baby

Slay a few animals

At the crossroads

Too late

All in the yard

But it's getting harder

By the crossroads

You got to meet me

Oh, we're going, we're going great

At the edge of town

Tropic corridor

Tropic treasure

Having a good time

Got to come along

What got us this far

To this mild equator?

Outskirts of the city

You and I

We need someone new

Something new

Something else to get us through

Better bring your gun

Better bring your gun

Tropic corridor

Tropic treasure

We're going to ride and have some fun

When all else fails

We can whip the horse's eyes

And make them sleep

And cry

My oldest daughter recently graduated from college and landed a job right away as a newspaper reporter. One of the decisions she needs to make now that she is in the "real world" is how much of her pay she should set aside into a 401k for retirement. Even though it seems far away I advised her not to hold off saving for the future. Taken with a Canon 60mm USM Macro lens. Type L for a better view.

Er, I mean my assistant. Although, he prefers the job title "Location Scout". Dash feels it's his job to run into frame every time I'm about to take a photo. Invariably, he leaves footprints where I don't want them or shakes the water off himself and onto my lenses. 😠

Good thing I don't pay him much. And he can forget about a matching 401K plan. 😐

Another night portrait from Moab, UT. Don't know if I set this up and took it, or if Pierce Martin did. Regardless, behold...me in the flesh, with the flint.

Speaking of wonderful old me, here are a few things I learned about myself the other day as my friends were trying to force me to buy more clothing.

I happen to own more pairs of skis than pairs of pants. The same goes for guns and again for knives. And I own more pieces of technical outerwear than shorts and pants combined, and I have kept most shorts since middle school. I call it a Colorado wardrobe!

I have invested more in kites in the past 8 months than I have in my 401K and brokerage account (and I think I've done a pretty good job contributing to both).

When I load up my truck for a weekend of fun, the value of all the crap in the back and strapped to the top far outweigh the cost of the truck itself.

When my parents watched 127 hours and distraughtly asked me what I learned fromthe movie I answered that I should never under any circumstance carry dull knives. Dont worry, I wouldn't anyways.

This is a classic Standard Oil station that dates to the 1920s or 1930s. It was "standard" architecture for many of the company's outlets in the Midwest. Only a few of these Red Crown stations exist today. This one is now an insurance and financial services agency. So no tune-ups or white-capped attendant in a bow tie servicing your car--but you can get your 401k overhauled.

Labor Day

Jimmy Buffett sang a song written by Mac McAnally titled "It's My Job". One verse and the chorus go as follows:

"In the middle of late last night I was sittin' on a curb

I didn't know what about but I was feeling quite disturbed

A street sweeper came whistlin' by

He was bouncin' every step

It seemed strange how good he felt

So I asked him while he swept

He said 'It's my job to be cleaning up this mess

And that's enough reason to go for me

It's my job to be better than the rest

And that makes the day for me'."

I watched this man mix concrete the old fashioned way in Baracoa, Cuba. Though he was working hard, he seemed quite content. At that moment I thought of Jimmy Buffett's song.

While our jobs often define us it seems, in reality we are not defined by our jobs. My job is no more important or impressive than this man's job. Bill Gates is no more of a human than I am. And so on. But cultures and attitudes often mold us into thinking we are less valuable than we are. The fact is, we are all completely unique and one-of-a-kind. There is reason to celebrate this and to be reminded of how valuable and important we are. Don't check your bank account. Don't check your 401k plan. Don't check your garage to see if you're driving an expensive import. None of that matters. Remind yourself that you are a handmade creation -- so divinely made that you really aren't capable of understanding how it all works!

And that makes the day for me!
