Prestwick 18/8/21. USAF C-21 84-0096.

Taxing out for departure after a quick gas stop from Prestwick airport in Ayrshire, Scotland is this USAFE Learjet C21A 40096.

Siliguri (SGUJ) WDP-4D #40096 blasts past in Maximum Speed hauling almost 3 hours late 15654 Jammu Tawi - Guwahati Amarnath Express

On finals to runway 29 at Mildenhall, this military adaption of the Gates Learjet 35 is operated by the USAFE under the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein, Germany and is used to transport VIPs around Europe.

Built in 1984, operated by the 76th Airlift Squadron, part of the 76th Airlift Wing (United States Air Forces in Europe) based at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

1D35 : 0945 to Bangor, which was formed of 7 coaches & departed 16 minutes late.

Manchester Victoria - c0955 - 03/08/82.

40096 (LO) - Holyhead (Light Engine for 5J10 to Bangor & 1J10 to Manchester Victoria) - early morning (c0600) - 03/08/82.

Shrewsbury November 1982 40096 is held waiting for the road next to Shrewsbury station whilst working an empty ballast train to Bayston Hill quarry

40096 (LO) - 1J22 (1352 SX Bangor - Manchester Victoria, which was formed of 7 coaches) - Chester - 1516 - 03/08/82, whilst 47350 (CD) waited in the centre-road with an empty merry-go-round coal train from Fidlers Ferry PS to Point of Ayr Colliery.

40096 departs from Guide Bridge Stabling Point on 21st August 1979. The locomotive was withdrawn in December 1983 and cut up at Doncaster Locomotive Works in June 1984. Photograph scanned from original slide.

56092 - 7M?? (???? SX? loaded merry-go-round coal train from Healey Mills S.S to Fidlers Ferry CEGB Power Station, which was formed of c36 individually numbered HAAs loaded with "Black Gold2 from Yorkshire) - Arpley Jn, Warrington - 0953 (the train returned empty at 1209, 2 hours & 16 minutes later) - 24/03/82, as 40096 headed for a rest at the holding sidings.

40096 is at the head of the 14.10 Llandudno to York, the train is about to join the main line at Llandudno Junction 04/07/1981.

40086 was built at the Vulcan Foundry as D296, she was put into traffic 03/10/1960. The loco was withdrawn 19/12/1983 and cut at Doncaster 01/06/1984.

40096 - 8T62 (LV62 trip from Garston Yd to Arpley Yd, which was formed of 21 wagon [mainly loaded with wooden sleepers from Ditton] & a Brake Van on the rear, as the train propelled into the Yd) - Warrington Arpley Jn - 1547 - 24/03/82.

40096 (LO) - 1J10 (0709 SX to Manchester Victoria, which was formed of 7 coaches) - Bangor - morning (c0705) - 03/08/82.

It's only this week when I converted the paper notes to digital. did I realise that on arrival 40096 was "stepped up" to work the 0945 to Bangor (with 25304 bringing in the stock from Red Bank CS) instead of the 1045 to Holyhead (with no other loco available 25304 was pressed into service!), but with so many interesting loco's & workings it was an easy mistake to make.

 

40096 eventually departed 16 minutes with 1D35 to Bangor:-

A much changed scene today with the demolition of the Courtaulds factory.

40096 - 8T62 (LV62 trip working from Arpley Yd to Garston, which was formed of 30 vehicles & a Brake Van on rear for the reverse move) - Warrington Arpley Jn - 1126 to 1128 - 24/03/82.

Class 40 40096 makes a fine sight as it run's down onto a train to Blackpool I am not sure were the service was from ?. Other 40's seen here that day were 40046/96/106/126/136/155/166/171/175. 14/07/1979. 87001 08;10 Birmingham to Preston. 85004 back.

40096 is attached to the Ravenscraig to Dee Marsh Steel Coils at Warrington BQ. A pair of 86/87 electrics having worked as far as Warrington.

40096 withdrawn December 1983 cut up Doncaster June 1984.

9T85 : Gathurst - Warrington Arpley trip, which was formed of 10 vehicles & a Brakevan.

Class 40, 40096, sits silent at the head of the 18:10 to Birmingham, with half a hour to go before departure.

 

At the end of the platform, outside the signal box, sits what I presume to be the signal man's car.

The first loco still has its frost guard fitted to the radiator.

 

Replaced with a larger and improved image, January 2021.

I was spending the day photographing in the Manchester area and was on my way to Guide Bridge above is Class 40 40096 passing through with a rail train also seen before going to Guide Bridge were 47409/436. 25055/154/184. 40079 . I was to photograph 40096 again later in the day as it replaced Class 47 47038 on a service to York. 17/07/1979.

A close up of green Class 40 40137 in the yard at Crewe Works. There were plenty of 40,s at Works that Sunday, 40007/14/24.32/61/66/69/73/75/79/96/99/115/128/137/153/187/192. and 40043/76 were seen at Bescot. 15/12/1974.

At 12.30pm on July 4th 1982, Class 40's 40094, 40096 & 40080 were stabled along platform 5 at Preston station at the North end of a row of eight locomotives during an ASLEF dispute over flexible rostering.

Yet another shot of 40096 silent on the end of the 18:10 to Birmingham New Street.

Note, 40069 was built by The Vulcan Foundry Limited (works number D506) at Newton-le-Willows for the English Electric Company Limited (works number 2791) in March 1960 for British Railways as number D269, being renumbered 40069 in February 1974. It was withdrawn from Longsight Diesel Traction Maintenance Depot in week commencing 18th September 1983, being stored at Newton Heath Traction Maintenance Depot until it was moved to Doncaster works on 13th December 1983 where it was cut up by 8th September 1984

 

40069 carried a HM sticker on the cabside, being transferred from Healey Mills Traction Maintenance Depot to Longsight Diesel Traction Maintenance Depot in January 1983

 

40096 was built by The English Electric Company Limited (works number 2818) at The Vulcan Foundry Limited Locmotive Works (works number D533) at Newton-le-Willows in 1960 for British Railways as number D296, being renumbered 40096 in week ending 9th February 1974

40096 stabled inside the shed at Crewe depot, 2nd July 1983.

Over the year's I took quite a few picture's at Preston it was alway's a great place to photograph Class 40's above is 40139 roaring out of the station heading for Blackpool I am not sure where this service started as all I have in my notebook is 40139 excursion to Blackpool maybe some one out there know's where this train started ??. Also seen were 40096/99. 85014/16/20/33. 47175/446/447/450/491/537. 86003/23/27/30/208/225. 16/09/1978.

I had a permit to visit Crewe Work's and came up from Birmingham with 86007. I was hoping to get a few pictures of Class40's there were 16 at Works that Sunday 40006/8/40/43/46/67/68/80/92/96/105/106/143/155/158/166. With 40013/28/30/52/79/109, seen in the station area. Above coming off the Chester line is 40159 with a freightliner train. I took a few picture's in the station before heading home with 86207. A good Sunday's photography with 40159 as a bonus. I was having a Day photographing at Chester and had made way back to the station {thank god} when it started to pour with rain you can see it battering off the platform what a storm it was all over very quickly , I stood under the canopy and took this picture of Class 40 40096 standing in the rain with a Trafford Park to Holyhead freightliner, ten minuites later the sun was out again , and I was on my way back to Crewe to take a few more pictures before heading for home from a good day out. 05/06/1982.

Watched by a very young lad { who will be in his late forty's now } Class 87 87005 City of London waits to leave Preston with a London Euston to Glasgow train for once the sun was out at Preston most of my visit's it was raining or dull. There was plenty to photograph here that day. Loco's seen were 40046/96/106/126/136/155/171/175/166. 47168/429/447/454. 25074220/309/318. 45026. 46016. 31111. 81002/5/11/19/39. 83008. 84003. 85006/30/33/35/36.40. 86010/11/14/32/219/224/234/240/242/246/254/256/259. 87004/5/6/7/8/10/22/29/33. I had come up from Birmingham with Class 87 87101 and was having a day photographing here as usual there was plenty to see, 40044/51/67/94/96/121/129/155/186. 47438/447/453/514. 86029/239/240/248/257. 87017/27/31/34/101. 81007/8. 83013/15. 85011. 25259. 84003, were all seen. Above is Class 40 40094 running through the station with a north bound freight. 31/08/1977. 87021 Preston to Crewe then 86213 back to Birmingham and the end of a great day out. KC.

40096 (LO) - 9T85 (Trip 85 working from Gathurst / Springs Branch to Arpley Yard, which was formed of three air braked VDA wagons, 7 vacuum braked wagons & a Brake Van on the rear) - Warrington Bank Quay - c1645 - 25/08/83.

English Electric Type 4 No. 40096 approaches Bushbury Junction with 4D58, the 14:40 SX Birmingham Lawley Street - Holyhead freightliner on 6th May 1983.

The people who lived in those houses behind the loco have a good view of the comeings and goings at Blackpool Station Class 40 40095 runs into the yard to collect the stock for 14:05 to Glasgow, I will photograph this loco again as it leaves with it,s train. 31/07/1976.

Class 40 40096 makes a supberb sight as it come.s out of one the tunnel's near Chester with what I belive was the 14:40 Manchester to Llandudno. It was a good day for Class 40's, 40008/55/82/131 were seen at Crewe and in the Chester arera 40022/28/79/80/96/105/113/117/118/119/120/170/192/197. What more could you ask for a sunny Summer Saturday and plenty of 40's to photograph it doe's not get much better than that. Great Day's much missed KC. 04/08/1979.

With the front 2 coaches packed with haulage fans 40096 swings into Rhyl station. The train was the 07.52 Leeds - Llandudno. In the background is a very large signal gantry and to the right the empty loco shed that was 6K Rhyl. 04/07/1981.

40096 was built at The Vulcan Foundry as D296 and put into service 03/10/1960, it was withdrawn 19/12/1983 at cut at Doncaster 01/06/1984.

The service was diverted, and had just transversed the triangle at Chester, and was checked by a signal. Myself and mates took a chance, and got on, the guard swiftly acted and kicked us back off again!
