An image uploaded almost nine years ago that I thought would benefit from reprocessing, and a relaunch.

Un-renumbered, and still in green livery, it features English Electric Type 4 no. 210 arriving at Crewe with what's likely to be the 8.45am Holyhead - Euston service.

By this time it had lost its 'Empress of Britain' nameplates after being demoted from the top-link WCML services post electrification. However, the bolt-holes for it on the body side are still visible just beyond the large air-vent.

In 1974 these locomotives, by now identified as class 40s under the TOPS system, were still regular performers on the North Wales passenger services.

The shot was taken with my recently acquired Zenit E, hence a bit of softness around the edges. Far from perfect but a good starter camera for anyone getting into 35mm photography, and for sure a significant step up from the 1930s designed Agfa Billy Zero folding camera purloined from my Father with its eight images per film and inability to 'stop' anything that was moving at more than walking pace - at least in my hands.

High Speed Ektachrome rated at 160asa.

Brand new English Electric Class 40/Type 4 D210 stands in Willesden MPD with some oddly overgrown tracks in the foreground. Built at the Vulcan Foundry in May 1959, its first allocation was to Willesden (1A) followed by a swift move to Camden (1B) in August of the same year. Further movements followed shortly, to Bescot in January 1966, the Western Lines in April 1966, Lostock Hall in August 1967, the Preston Division in June 1968 and Longsight in October 1973. Renumbered under the TOPS scheme as 40010 in February 1974, its final move was to Carlisle Kingmoor in October 1977, from where it was withdrawn in July 1981. It languished for two years before making its final journey to Swindon Works for cutting in July 1983. D210 was named 'Empress of Britain' in 1960, the first of the class to be so honoured.

Crawford on the 3rd of June 1963 and Class 40 D210 now carrying the name Empress of Britain is on the Royal Scot 10.00 Euston to Glasgow but not carrying a headboard.

The loco was new from the Vulcan Foundry in May 1959 and allocated to Camden at this time.

Withdrawn as 40010 in July 1981 with a cracked main generator the loco was cut up at Swindon in July 1983.

Having earlier worked a ballast train from Horton Quarry to Carlisle, Class 40 40010 was returning southbound light engine, passing Ais Gill summit on August 31st 1979. The former Midland Railway signalbox was 'switched out' at the time.

The loco was one of the early batch of English Electric Type 4's built at Vulcan Foundry, D210 being new in May 1959. It went new to Willesden (1A). D210 was named 'Empress of Britain' in May 1960. The loco was renumbered to 40010 in February 1974 and would last just over 22 years in traffic, it being withdrawn due to main generator problems in July 1981. 40010 was consigned to history at Swindon Works in July 1983.

A dig from the past, New Year 1977 and 40010 on the 18.00 Sundays Manchester to Newcastle. I don't recollect actually getting off the train other than to get a photo. An image that personifies Winters of old on any platform end. The huge heater blasting away to keep the water hose from freezing. The air full of frost. Enthusiasts braving the elements. Trains near to time or not to late. Something that may well be lost on the new generation.

Ex-LMS Fowler 2-6-2T 40010 with a push-pull train at St Albans Abbey station, in summer 1955.

Around this time, the line was also being used to test the BR 'ACV' 4-wheeled railbus units:

The loco was withdrawn in July 1961, and scrapped in August 1962. No examples were preserved..

On the right is the old gasworks building, which was in use until 1971, and was demolished in 1975.

In later years, all that remained of the station was the bare platform and a single track, but in recent years the station has been refurbished, and the line electrified.

Today (2018) the old gasworks site is occupied by offices and a supermarket.

Watford Junction in July 1960 and Class 40 D210 Empress of Britain is looking smart but used as it waits to depart for Euston. By the shadows f the photographer and his friend I am this must be the evening.

New just over a year earlier to Willesden and I guess the first Midland allocated 40, the loco was allocated to Camden at the time and was withdrawn in July 1981.

Watford Junction on the 8th of August 1959 and it looks like class 40 D210 is heading north on a stopping service.

The unnamed loco (Empress of Britain in May 1960) was three months old at this time and allocated to Willesden (1A).

Withdrawn in July 1981 with a cracked main generator the loco was cut up at Swindon in July 1983.

Locomotive History

40010 was originally D210 and was built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, entering traffic in May 1959. It was the first of the production run of English Electric Type 4’s, following on from the pilot series (D200 – D209) and was allocated to Willesden MPD for West Coast Main Line duties. Twenty five class 40’s carried the names of famous ocean going liners on cast brass plates and D210 was named Empress of Britian, with the nameplates being fitted in 1960. These nameplates began to be removed by British Rail during the 1970, as the class 40’s were no longer considered as front line passenger engines and they were also attracting unwanted interest from "collectors". It would spend its early years allocated to Camden and Bescot before moving to the North West in August 1967. 40010 received its last classified repair at Crewe works in May 1980 however would be withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor only fourteen months later in July 1981 with a serious main generator failure. Following withdrawal it languished for two years before finally being broken up at Swindon Works during July 1983.

Apologies for the quality of this picture of 40010 on Immingham depot but it was around 1976, so 45 years ago.

Or at least that's how I imagine it was in the years that Class 40s were regular visitors to this route. A dad and son admire No. 40010 as she pauses at Rhyl with an unrecorded service on Thursday 4th August 1977. A "Five for Four" excursion (five consecutive day trips for the price of four) had brought me from Bristol to the seaside town that day. This was the final jaunt of the five; other destinations that week had been Lancaster/Morecambe, Bognor Regis, York/Scarborough, and Eastbourne.
