Today my very first DSLR, a Sony A200 with twin kit lenses (18-70mm and 75-300mm) that I purchased brand new on ebay arrived in the mail today. Just six months ago all I had for a camera was a Kodak EasyShare and since then I've "upgraded" 3 times: first to Canon PowerShot A590IS, then to PowerShot SX10IS, and now to this. Flickr has a way of spiking people's camera envy I guess! So far, I haven't had much chance to use this thing; the weather was gloomy today so all I had were some indoor shots of...who else? Casey! I'm really excited about the 3fps burst speed...which means my handheld HDRs (such as this!) will come out a lot better. Having RAW support is nice too (with CHDK it was such a hassle to get at it). A lot more to come soon! =)

Photo story: (IT´S NOT UNDEREXPOSED!)
The story behind this series of pictures is something unique I lived yesterday. It was sunday and I prepared my rucksack and made my plans to spend many hours at the stream, planting lots of oak seeds and take photos. But the day went in another direction, so I spent some time at work, later cleaning up, cooking, taking care of my grandmother... I took launch tooo late and I was tired so went to cancel my plans to go to the stream, but something called me to go even though I was going to have very short time of sunlight. Couldn´t imagine something MAGICAL was waiting for me: the kingfishers appeared briefly giving me no chance to catch them. One appeared and gave me the chance of two shots. I wasn´t prepared to see it right in front of me. Then it went away. It was when sun was gone and light started to really fade away when a Magic blue angel came again to perch at the same tree branches over the water of the stream. Flew few times from one branch to another very slowly, like a hummingbird. It was so quiet that I was able to take my shutter speed as low as 1/20s to reduce noise. My Quiet Continuos 3fps was switched then to reduce noise. I tried many shutting modes, speeds, etc, with the fear it could notice of me and go away... BUT IT WAS THERE... EVERYTHING POINTED IT WAS GOING TO STAY THERE TO SLEEP THAT NIGHT. WOW! I understood soon it was going to be one of the most magical moments of my life. And it was so. I didn´t know what to do but didn´t want to disturb it anyway, so decided to stay there as much as possible. It was completely dark when I saw its blue back reflect from my phone light checking that it wasn´t disturbed by me to say goodbye. GOODNIGHT KING. THANKS!.

I was shooting this motocross race through a fence at the track at Yahuarcocha Lake. I just continued shooting at a very modest 3fps, hoping when I saw the photos later on my computer, that I would have a few nice shots. In this particular shot, I liked both the light-colored dirt as well as the darker dirt kicking up from the rear tire. Check out the following shots for some processing variations. I hope you like them...Dave.

My favorite manual focus SLR body. I have 2 of these and they've never let me down. 3fps motor drive, Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Priority exposure modes, Autobracketing and exposure compensation are no problem. Center weighted, Spot or Multi Segment Matrix metering. Being small and lightweight, this camera is very comfortable to carry. It's the perfect camera if you don't need a high speed motor drive or autofocus. Photo taken with Contax Aria, Contax TLA360 Flash with Lumiquest Mini Softbox attachment, Studio Systems SP920MDLVP Monolight with Small Softbox, Zeiss Planar 50mm F1.7 lens, Tiffen 81A Warming filter, Fuji Provia 100F, F16 at 1/125 sec., Nikon Coolscan V ED, Photoshop Elements 2.0, Metered with a Sekonic L-508 Zoom Master.
Here the 5D Mark III performed wonderfully tracking Sam in a shady evening environment. The camera's superior high ISO capabilities allowed me to crank the ISO to 12800 and shoot at 1/2000, while the 6fps gave me a great range of poses from which to choose. There is some grain evident, but I find it pleasing (the downsized version over-accentuates the grain -- original is not as bad).
I could've run this shot several times on the 5DII and not come away with any keepers, between the worse AI Servo performance, AF performance, lower shutter speed (to compensate for poorer ISO quality), and 3fps.

The Continuous 3fps shutter is a bit weird. The first frame will have a lag before it decide that it will go 3fps... I think the AE lock should go for the Japanese route of 'press and lock', so one doesn't have to hold the button all the time.
The Hasselblad HCD 35-90 is pretty good. Pity that they don't have profile for it in the LR.
I finally upgraded today to the Canon 40D from the 20D. It is a huge improvement.
Love the live view and the 6.3fps.
The shutter feels real solid when firing, reminds me of higher end medium format cameras.
I bought it from Samys's Camera in Hollywood. It sure is nice buying right over the counter and taking it out for a spin right away.

So, I made a short film out of some timelapsing i did today. Using an intervelometer (Canon TC-80N3) and my 30D, i shot over 1000frames and spliced them together in Quicktime and Finalcut. Check it out.
0.3FPS - A short film by Simon Waterhouse 6.9MB - Quicktime 7 Required
Manufactured in 2001 by SiPix Imaging, Inc. in China. SiPix was established in 1999 in Silicon Valley, California. At its introduction, the StyleCam was the smallest digital camera on the market. It measured only 3.4 x 2.3 x 1.0 inches (including the lens barrel) and weighed just 2.6 oz. It was powered by a single AAA battery and had 8MB of RAM built in for image storage. It features a 6.3mm f/3.0 lens (no flash) and a 640x480 “VGA” CMOS imager. It used a USB 1.1 interface to transfer the images to a Windows XP PC. A movie mode actually captures up to 180 still images at 3fps, and then combines these into an AVI video on a PC using a proprietary software package, SiPix AVI Maker. The camera used SDRAM memory, which means that battery is required to keep data in memory - if the battery runs down or is removed, images are lost. It can be used as a tethered USB webcam for video conferencing. As of this writing, SiPix no longer makes cameras, but display electronics instead.

My New Camera. The Nikon D3100 is so light with the kit lens, and very quick. It turns on instantly, and shoots at 3fps. It includes a quiet mode to lessen the noise from the shutter, but it's virtually silent in normal mode. I hope to get lots of use out of this camera.
This is my camera. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
I must master it as I must master my life. My camera without me, is useless. Without my camera, I'd be depressed (but i'll get over it i guess). I must shoot steadier than my fellow photographer who has better IS/VR/VC/SSS than in body SR. I will...
My camera and myself know that what counts in a shoot is not the # of shots we take, the noise of our 3fps burst shots, nor the flash of light we make. We know that it is the final output that count. We will shoot...
My camera is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its viewfinder and its lenses. I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage as I will ever guard my legs, my arms, my eyes and my heart against damage. I will keep my camera clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

So near yet so far from being The Dream DSLR! The number 1 DSLR to hold in your hands. Weighty, beautifully constructed (no plastic!!), legendary badge and fantastic IS 28-100mm 2.8-3.5 piece of glass. On the other hand its not the number 1 DSLR to use. Whilst the IS lens, contrast, colour, tonality, tac sharp images is all first class the 3fps is very entry consumer/level and the Digilux 3 falls short at 1600 ISO. Very useable up to 800 but 800 is often not enough. IF ONLY!!!!!!!!! I wait patiently for the Digilux 4...........
Ah, my Contax i4r, a wonderful little camera that grows ever more woefully long in the tooth. I love the form factor but it's running an 8+ year old sensor and imaging engine, and the lens drive motor sounds like it's in the throes of agonizing death. Nevertheless, I've managed to grab a few good scenes with this puppy, as the compactness makes it easy to bring everywhere, and a revitalized massive battery off of ebay keeps it going and going.
Contemporary use is tricky, it's awful in low light, and not much better even with the flash, iso200 is already noisier than most modern camera phones, and time between shots is eternal. It does have some neat tricks though, like a wonderful macro mode, that DELICIOUS lens, and a cool near-unlimited 3fps 'action' shooting mode that's fun to play with.
I wish there was an updated model, with the same size, just newer shinier guts, or even something more modern and similar in size, but I haven't found it. It's only kind sizewise seem to be about just as old as it is. (Sony L1/UX, and other such old cameras)
Oh well, I suppose I'll just use it until it wont give me any more. Seen here with a AA batery and the sony nex kit zoom.
I've just made my own motorized macro rail using some parts from ebay (probably ~40$ altogether), and here is the first test. The idea was to have an electric gear motor to move photo camera with a macro lens (in this case - macro bellow with a reversely mounted 50mm f2.0 manual lens) super slowly - something like 10mm per minute. Then you let the camera shoot (using intervalometer from the Magic Lantern firmware) fast - three frames per second on my Canon 50D. I use an external flashlight which is capable of making 3 flashes per second at 1/32 of the full power. I use very fast CF card in my camera, to make sure I maintain 3fps for more than a hundred shots.
In this test shot, I had ~120 shots made over 40 seconds covering ~5mm in depth. I merged all the shots using free focus stacking software Enfuse.
The purpose of all this trouble is to create a much larger depth of field than in a single shot, so you can have your whole macro object in focus, not just a thin slice. With a motorized macro rail one can in principle get to almost any depth of field (up to a few cm). Of course that will take hundreds of shots.
This is my first film that I ever did.
It took 1,987 photos to make this video.
Shot with EOS 400D at 3fps. I merged all the image together in Sony Vegas for HD editing..
Probably this will be the last uploaded for a few months.. my wife is also very pregnant (33 weeks to be exact) of twins ( boy and girl). so a lot of my free time that I would put towards the flickr is being transfered to spending some much needed time my family.
Cheers!

the boy was walking around without any clothes on, and it's interesting to note the scars on his little body.

Some of my early experiments of stop-motion mixed with filming at 3fps.
I like to get that old film look with lot of grain, noise and high contrast and full colors. Something DSLR's do quite good at higher ISO values. The lenses and image control make possible what no camcorder can do.

Had to try the milk/water drop shot! Took a lot of photos and kept a few but this is one of my favorites from the bunch!
Using a miniature DSLR-camera trap, ten days in the life of the Critically Endangered trapdoor spider Liphistius kanthan from a cave in Malaysia have been rendered into ~8 minutes of time lapse video by omitting most of the time when the spider was either hidden behind its trapdoor or just its feet were visible at the threshold. Over the 10 days the spider came completely out of its nest just 17 times with an average time out of about 3 secs......so in ten days it spent roughly 1 minute out! It seems to come out for two reasons (1) to catch a meal; and (2) to defecate after rotating its body anticlockwise at the entrance. Bursts of action by the spider are played at approximately their real time rate of 3fps. sequence, animal, wildlife, fauna, cave fauna, predator, predatory, hunting, arachnid, spider, trapdoor spider, liphistius kanthan, endemic, critically endangered, nest, cave, gua kanthan, perak, malaysia, asia, camera trap, time lapse, december 2013
My second installment in the Exposure Wars between me and GhoSStrider!
How it started: I don't remember how we got on topic, but he was complaining about not being able to hold still for a 1/4s exposure time. I was like "My camera shoots 3fps, and I sat still long enough to HDR myself! That was at LEAST a whole second! I would think you could stay still long enough for 1/4s! LOL" And thus began our war :-D He had an 8 second exposure in which he was tiny and microscopic. I picked on him for that ;-) Yesterday he had a 13 second exposure! Now we're getting somewhere! Of course, he laid his head on his desk... *giggles*
This is my second entry. 15 seconds, and no head support! Or there'd be like 2 dozen grease marks on the window from my forehead...
But, it was a long day... It was nice to sit for lots of seconds at a stretch ;-)
This was lit by an itty bitty lamp on the other side of the room... Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 @ f/6.7, ISO 100, 15sec
As for the music in my head...
Dreams to dream
In the dark of the night
When the world goes wrong
I can still make it right
I can see so far in my dreams
I'll follow my dreams
Until they come true
Come with me
You will see what I mean
There's a world inside
No one else ever sees
You will go so far in my dreams
Somewhere in my dreams
Your dreams will come true
There is a star
Waiting to guide us
Shining inside us
When we close our eyes
Don't let go
If you stay close to me
In my dreams tonight
You will see what I see
Dreams to dream
As near as can be
Inside you and me
They always come true

Really loved the rendering of the OOF areas.
The just announced Nikon D85O, more of the same including the faults. Snapbridge still does not work properly like my D500 and the EFC implementation is still like the crippled one in my D500, it's available in MUP mode with 2 pumps of the remote.
New on the D85O, EFC is apparently also usable in "Quiet" and "Quiet Continuous" modes IF "Exposure Delay Mode" (min 0.2s) is enabled, I really don't understand why you have to go through so many hoops to shoot with EFC. Bottomline, the new D85O's EFC implementation is still not usable for handheld shooting. Furthermore in QC mode, frame rate is down to 3fps.
Ideally, EFC should be usable in Live-view since the mirror is already out of the way but you cannot look through your OVF to make the shot because the D85O does not have a hybrid viewfinder! So you end up with a roundabout, complicated and compromised EFC implementation, again.
Looks to be an easy pass for me, nothing much better than the 2 years old Sony a7Rii! In fact, it seems that the 2 year old Sony a7Rii has better dynamic range than the new D85O!
For handheld shooting of high mpx cameras, absence of mirror vibrations, EFC and IBIS make a world of difference. I can see this clearly between my Nikon D800E and Sony a7Rii. No point having so many pixels if none are crisp, better off with just 24mpx instead!
As with all major new camera launches, there's a flood of articles, preliminary reviews etc. All to stir up interest and frenzy. Best let the dust settle and see if the new product really delivers and most importantly gives what you need vs what you already have.
Just like the Sony a9, it was indeed a revolutionary camera in some ways, lots of new innovation. I have no use for 20fps, zero blackouts etc. For what I shoot, I'm perfectly happy with the a7Rii which works really well with the FE100-400mm GM lens even with TC14 on, just have to reconfigure the camera for back button AF-On.
Of course, all the reviews out there for this new FE100-400mm f4.5-5.6 GM OSS is on the Sony a9, for obvious reasons.
It's hence important to understand about gear and not fall victim to hype and marketing.
Great time however to be buying a lightly used D810 for Nikon shooters who do not own a D8xx series body but needed the high resolution sensor for TRIPOD use.
I really hope Nikon has something innovative beyond this D85O.
