ISS Solar Transit taken from Pelsall, West Midlands. This was shot while the ISS was 577Km from my location and it only took 0.94s for it to cross the sun, in that time I managed to grab 17 frames with it showing against the Solar disk.

17 x individual frames showing the ISS against the solar disk
It's a composite of 21 layers. two layers are the finished image for the surface. two layers are for the prominences and then the 17 frames showing the ISS are layered with a mask hiding everything except for the ISS.

5 years after Nikon entered the mirrorless segment, they finally have a D850 successor (launched 2017).
If you are happy with 7fps and can do without IBIS nor care for video, you save a lot of $ without switching and besides, the image quality remains unchanged since the Z8 stacked sensor is very likely derived from the same 45.7mp unstacked version in the 6 years old D850. Ultimately there’s no rush to switch even now but for those intending to do so, there is finally a viable option in the Z8.
1) Cost of switching to mirrorless is a lot more than just buying a new camera.
• Cost of new Z8 and
• Cost of buying Z lenses, using existing DSLR lenses with FTZ adapter is at best a temporary solution and Nikon allowed IBIS to work only in 3 axis via FTZ.
2) Advantages of Z8 vs D850
• 20fps vs 7fps full resolution, full AF with zero concern of wearing out a mechanical shutter. D850 with minimal mirror and shutter vibrations is only 3fps in Qc mode, higher fps in LV but with rolling shutter penalty, all these are not relevant for fast paced subjects at > 1/FL shutter speeds hence 7fps remains the relevant comparison.
• IBIS, useful for low light handheld shooting of still subjects.
• Much better video thanks to stacked sensor.
• No need for lens calibration, especially useful for shallow DOF such as super telephoto lenses and shooting fast prime lenses wide opened.
• Z supertelephoto prime lenses for wildlife and birding.
3) Advantages of D850 vs a new Z8
• Below ISO500, D850 has better Dynamic Range (⅓ to 1EV) including at Base ISO64. 1st generation stacked sensor typically has worse Dynamic Range than their unstacked version.
• No additional cost if you already own one, even cheaper to buy used after the Z8 launch.
• Continue to use your existing DSLR lenses with no additional cost. While Z lenses may have better MTFs, whatever real-life perceivable gap can be bridged via competent post-processing. In addition, lens sharpness is not everything and Nikon themselves have admitted to placing more emphasis on Z lens sharpness at the expense of other lens attributes (rendering etc).
• Wider variety and cheaper DSLR lens options esp 3rd party.
Good things come to those who wait, congrats to those who have held out till now and not fall for the siren call of shills/influencers who have been misrepresenting that the Z7/Z7ii replaces D850. The Z7/Z7ii was launched at the same price as D850 but the Z7/Z7ii was even not pro spec unlike the D850 which is.
Those who jumped into Z7 and then Z9, some are already saying that the Z8 is not for them, upgrade fatigue is real. Z8 at $3,999 is a very good deal.
For those still shooting with 36mp D800/D800E/D810, the right camera to buy would be a potential 33mp Z6iii with the Sony sensor from A7IV.

The newly released Nikon Z8 has already seen 2 service recalls, 1st for lens mount that fails to lock on the lens being mounted and the 2nd for strap lugs that can detach from the camera body. Both are low tech basic parts but can result in the mounted lens dropping to the ground or both body and mounted lens dropping in the case of strap lugs failure.
It's best to hold off buying the Z8 for a while especially when the straps lug failure could point to a design flaw. For the Nikon fanbois shills who claimed that they aren't affected since they don't use strap lugs, the issue will raise its head when they try to sell off their cameras as buyers of this camera are typically not casual users.

Just another Herring Gull. With 5D2 and the fast EF200 F2.8L II USM. Main drawback of the older camera for this work is the maximum frame rate of 3fps for flight shots but otherwise the old 5D2 still punches above its age.

Similar to the first image I posted in this series, but of a different eagle. It's my favourite photo from the session as the frame caught the bird a split second before it took the fish. It was the image I wanted - wings well back, talons stretched and eyes focused.
I favoured the slower D850 over the D500 to ensure I captured as much detail as possible. It cost me 3fps, but fortunately we had a few opportunities to get the photos that mattered.

This sequence of three were taken together (so cover around a second, given my D60 does 3fps) after heaving Rosie's ball high up (30ft?) in the air - and the clever girl caught it!
I snapped four photos of this girl, and this best I got at 3fps. She told me what it said, but I really just wanted the shot before her manager came over.

This was jump No. 3, The first Jump of Monday, and a very brave one at that to do such a blind jump in the rain!

On my bike before the sun was up this morning - glorious frosty morning with clear skies.
Unfortunately the cloud came over pretty quickly taking the light with it (and hence cutting into the shutter speed available).
The beardies I'm seeing at the moment are, for the most part, feeding at the base of the reedbeds so mving around a lot horizontally. I have an image in my mind of one or two at the base of the reeds with great reflections with the early morning sun shining directly onto them - won't need to be too close up as the light and reflections will make the image. This is slowly heading in that direction - the bird is not sharp enough however WIP.
Got a half decent close-up as well which I'll post soon - there's some wet weather forecast soon so it will be on one of those days.
Oh if any of you use a nikon d7100 - how loud is the shutter? The d7000 is like a kalashnikov being unleashed, I've read that the d610 has a silent shutter at 3fps however even half the sound would be useful as there is no doubt it could be disturbing. Then again I've used it with an otter 20 feet away from me and it couldn't have cared any less.

It took approximately 1.000 photos to make this video. All shot in low jpeg quality on a 350D at 3fps. (1728 x 1152)
At home I merged all the images together in Quicktime Pro and imported them in iMovie HD for further editing.

Decided to dust off the old 5D2, used the newish EF200 f2.8L as the only F2.8 tele glass I have. (or ever likely to have)
The mk2's max frame rate is about 3fps so no prizes for outright speed, but rather than that I thought its AF system might not keep pace with even these modestly cruising birds.
Wrong. It coped just fine despite having an autofocus system out of the ark, unchanged since the old 5D classic Mk1. Not so great with fast approachers which tended to have the face sharp but the rest less so. The difference between the mk2 and 3 is like night/day, so fine-adjustable is the newer AF system.
The famous Cookie Splash by the famous Siebe or De Vetpan has been phenomena on flickr in recent years. I did this for my photography class, in which the assignment was to take picture for represent actions or movement. Took me total of three tries to get the way i wanted. Since my Nikon D80 only takes 3fps, it was kinda difficult to get it right. Its sure fun taking the picture, but its not afterward when you realized theres coffee everywhere! ha

Take advantage of your camera's burst mode...
For action photography one of the important requirement in your camera is the burst mode. Entry level cameras have burst mode of 3fps (frames per second), mid range have around 7-9 fps and high end cameras have 10+ fps.
Whenever Tiger approaches a tree there is a high chance of it spraying the tree to mark it's territory. The burst mode helps you here to capture that behaviour.

Latest and greatest Nikon DSLR F mount E type lenses; 70-200mm f2.8E, 105mm f1.4E, 28mm f1.4E and all the exotic super telephoto Primes.
Z versions of the 24-70mm f2.8E and 70-200mm f2.8E will be out next year 2019 even though these 2 DSLR E lenses were only released 2 years ago.
Z7 with FTZ adaptor is only 195gms lighter than D850. Z lens road map has 3 undisclosed lenses for 2020, perhaps 1 of them will be a supertelephoto prime.
Will there be a Gen2 pro Z body in 2020 or will there be a hybrid DSLR instead? At this juncture, there is probably no turning back from mirrorless.
20fps without blackout is probably not achievable with the traditional DSLR without detrimental internal vibrations.
Mirrorless will have to overcome rolling shutter artifacts, thus far the A9 fast readout ameliorates the issue. Global shutter may be the ultimate solution but the technology needs to mature to reduce cost, noise and dynamic range penalties before it can be feasible.
The Z7 HANDHELD outputs will undoubtedly be more crisp than the D850 thanks to its IBIS and effective EFC and sans mirror, how much of this new level of crispness is due to the new Z lenses is arguable. Nikon DSLR lenses adapted on Z7, weight saving is only 195gms and the D850 has an effective Qc mode albeit it maxes out at only 3fps. The D850 still has the mirror box that can result in AF misalignment.
Gen2 Z body, that's when things will really get exciting.
My first time lapse capturing the caterpillar of the Common Mime butterfly transforming from a caterpillar into a pupa stage. The entire process takes about 5 mins.
Notice the wire-like structure supporting it, there's the main feature in the pupa stage which it is suspended from, until the butterfly emerges.
This guy knows just what to do, no need instruction manual, no need to google for info, no asking Siri for advice, need no guidance, no need to ask his mother and certainly does not require any on-the-job training. It does it right the first time. Once the stage is set, something very remarkable starts to happen inside the pupa. Its mode of travelling is amazingly change from crawling to flying once the overhaul is done in 13days.

Been thinking about this shot for a while. It's easy enough to light, but much more tricky than drop shots to get the timing right of the burst. At least with droplet shots you know that the splash will occur as soon as it hits the water, with bubbles they appear to be able to sit for a fraction of a second(or sometimes not!) before bursting.

We were having our rear porch replaced and a deck added so I thought I would give one of last year's Christmas gifts a workout. I received an Aputure Intervalometer last Christmas and hadn't found a good time to use it til now. Camera was set on a tripod and positioned looking out our rear door. The first part is taken thru the glass on the back door and the second half the camera was moved to the new rear porch to look down on the deck construction. Entire construction took approx 14 hours more or less. The video was made by combining the individual shots at the rate of 3 fps.

It was sunday and I prepared my rucksack and made my plans to spend many hours at the stream, planting lots of oak seeds and take photos. But the day went in another direction, so I spent some time at work, later cleaning up, cooking, taking care of my grandmother... I took launch tooo late and I was tired so went to cancel my plans to go to the stream, but something called me to go even though I was going to have very short time of sunlight. Couldn´t imagine something MAGICAL was waiting for me: the kingfishers appeared briefly giving me no chance to catch them. One appeared and gave me the chance of two shots. I wasn´t prepared to see it right in front of me. Then it went away. It was when sun was gone and light started to really fade away when a Magic blue angel came again to perch at the same tree branches over the water of the stream. Flew few times from one branch to another very slowly, like a hummingbird. It was so quiet that I was able to take my shutter speed as low as 1/20s to reduce noise. My Quiet Continuos 3fps was switched then to reduce noise. I tried many shutting modes, speeds, etc, with the fear it could notice of me and go away... BUT IT WAS THERE... EVERYTHING POINTED IT WAS GOING TO STAY THERE TO SLEEP THAT NIGHT. WOW! I understood soon it was going to be one of the most magical moments of my life. And it was so. I didn´t know what to do but didn´t want to disturb it anyway, so decided to stay there as much as possible. It was completely dark when I saw its blue back reflect from my phone light checking that it wasn´t disturbed by me to say goodbye. GOODNIGHT KING. THANKS!.

This was comet 41P Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak in the early evening (from 19:45 to 21:27 UT/GMT) of 22 March as the comet was moving away from M108. In the process the comet can clearly be seen to occult faint 14.7 magnitude star GSC 3827-0011 at around 20:05-07.
I've speeded the image up to 3fps = 135seconds in real time every second.

I was across town taking sunrise photos of a car dealership when I saw smoke billowing up across town. I started to pack up my gear and drive over immediately, but I continued to photograph the sunrise. Given that opportunity again, I will beat the fire trucks to the fire.
When I arrived at the scene of the fire an hour later, the smell of smoke was in the air and an occasional ash drifted down from the sky. The firemen were stowing their gear. I had taken a few photographs of bystanders and gawkers when I spotted a fireman emerging from behind the smoldering wreckage of the 100 year old home. I met him at the ladder truck as he slung his oxygen breathing aparatus and wet jacket inside and dropped his heavy fireman's trousers. He kicked off his rubber boots as I asked him for a quick portrait. "Just a moment," he said, as he stepped into black leather work boots.
The exhausted young man was kind enough to keep his classic leather fireman's helmet on for the shot, but he was obviously wanting to get some water and cool down a bit from the rush of adrenaline. I took several frames from two different angles at 3fps and let him get on with his work. His job wasn't over just because the fire was out.
I didn't want to push my luck asking for his name. I was beyond the invisible barrier that firemen and policemen like to keep at the scene of a fire or accident, and I was an unknown person with a camera. I thanked him and moved back to where the news crews were, across the street. I decided I would simply call him "Unknown Fireman." When I later examined the photos, I realized his nickname was on his helmet.

Photo story:
The story behind this series of pictures is something unique I lived yesterday. It was sunday and I prepared my rucksack and made my plans to spend many hours at the stream, planting lots of oak seeds and take photos. But the day went in another direction, so I spent some time at work, later cleaning up, cooking, taking care of my grandmother... I took launch tooo late and I was tired so went to cancel my plans to go to the stream, but something called me to go even though I was going to have very short time of sunlight. Couldn´t imagine something MAGICAL was waiting for me: the kingfishers appeared briefly giving me no chance to catch them. One appeared and gave me the chance of two shots. I wasn´t prepared to see it right in front of me. Then it went away. It was when sun was gone and light started to really fade away when a Magic blue angel came again to perch at the same tree branches over the water of the stream. Flew few times from one branch to another very slowly, like a hummingbird. It was so quiet that I was able to take my shutter speed as low as 1/20s to reduce noise. My Quiet Continuos 3fps was switched then to reduce noise. I tried many shutting modes, speeds, etc, with the fear it could notice of me and go away... BUT IT WAS THERE... EVERYTHING POINTED IT WAS GOING TO STAY THERE TO SLEEP THAT NIGHT. WOW! I understood soon it was going to be one of the most magical moments of my life. And it was so. I didn´t know what to do but didn´t want to disturb it anyway, so decided to stay there as much as possible. It was completely dark when I saw its blue back reflect from my phone light checking that it wasn´t disturbed by me to say goodbye. GOODNIGHT KING. THANKS!.

I have a very important decision to make in the next week or so. I have come across a used Canon 5D in great condition with the 70-200mm f/4 lens (above). But now I need to sell one of the camera systems. Should I stick with Nikon or go with Canon?
Pros of the Canon 5D setup:
Magnificent low noise at iso1600 - the D200 is virtually unusable at > ISO800
*pro* $3000 body
12.8 megapixel
It came with the top of line 580EX speedlite flash
Lighter without battery grip
Full-frame sensor - can get *real* super wide angle shots and capture more detail (sharpness)
I would need to buy a wide walk-around zoom lens (this is probably a con)
Pros of the Nikon D200 setup:
Can do 5fps vs. 3fps shooting on the 5D
Can do up to 9 shots auto bracketing from -4 to +4 EV compared to only 3 shots on the 5D
Much better UI and layout of buttons (for example, the 3 "kings" on the top of the left dial, and the BKT button on the back, not hidden in the menus like on the 5D)
I just ordered a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR ...and want to see how it performs
I have more accessories for the D200 (battery pack, wide angle lens)

There were so many possible compositions and plenty of angles to shoot and capture at the Disney Concert Hall. I was really fascinated... astounded! I didn't know where to begin at all!
Until I saw this in my viewfinder. I was literally mesmerized... silenced... by this very scene right in front of me. A heartbeat moment! ( I was too enchanted that I forgot to bracket "Temple" on 3fps... for possible future HDR endeavours). I think this was my ONLY capture of and at this angle, this beautiful scene.
I was hushed.
It was the Geometry...

First attempt at an International Space Station transit of the sun.
This is a 9 exposure stack. The "bow-ties" banding the sun are the images of the ISS
While I still have some camera shake, shutter speed, or focus issues to solve, I'm pretty happy to have caught it at all, let alone 9 frames. Need to work on my technique some more, though

Rain Lilies are low clump-forming perennials with dark green slim grass-like or needle-like leaves about 10-12 inches long - depending on the species. Flowers of Rain Lilies, about 2-3 inches wide are held above a hollow foot-tall stalk and usually burst into blooms after the rain (thus so called!) following a dry period. Blooms come in various colours of pink, white or yellow and last for about 2 days
As hardy plants, Rain Lilies hardly need much attention besides the usual watering and fertilizing! However, it is important to keep the clumps neat and tidy by removing the dried and yellow leaves as well as deadheading. It’s advisable to occasionally check for root disease due to over-watering or excessive rainfalls and treat it with pesticide to prevent speading!

This was the first time I've tried the 100-400mm on my Full Frame 5D Mk 1. It's an old camera by todays standards with a 12 Megapixel Sensor and 3fps burst speed. It is however a full frame camera and this means the image quality is actually rather good. I found when I did manage to get sharp images they were very sharp with nice clear detail. Infact in terms of sheer clarity I'd say it was better than the 7D MK II. However it won't really be using it for wildlife due to the poor AF performance and slowness of the camera. It should work quite nicely for landscape images however.
Using SoftTH I have downsampled the sim from the same resolution of a Canon 5D MkIII to show the possibilities achievable - the sim ran at 3FPS though, i only have one fairly weak GPU but a pair of 980s in SLI might be an interesting proposition for playing TS2015 in 4K and above!
My favorite manual focus SLR body. I have 2 of these and they've never let me down. 3fps motor drive, Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Priority exposure modes, Autobracketing and exposure compensation are no problem. Center weighted, Spot or Multi Segment Matrix metering. Being small and lightweight, this camera is very comfortable to carry. It's the perfect camera if you don't need a high speed motor drive or autofocus. Photo taken with Contax Aria, Contax TLA360 Flash with Lumiquest Mini Softbox attachment, Studio Systems SP920MDLVP Monolight with Small Softbox, Zeiss Planar 50mm F1.7 lens, Tiffen 81A Warming filter, Fuji Provia 100F, F16 at 1/125 sec., Nikon Coolscan V ED, Photoshop Elements 2.0, Metered with a Sekonic L-508 Zoom Master.

I'd just got my camera out to take a photo of some of the new stencil graffiti that seems to have cropped up overnight when I heard sirens. To my luck - and someone else's misfortune, this sped round the corner.
This is another one with natural speed blur. Say it with me once again... three cheers for 3fps burst mode!
For the technically inclined timelapse photographer using Nikon D300/D700/D3 etc, here's the schematics for the Rapid Interval Timer I just finished and tested. With this timer, you'll be able to shoot continous bursts of much more than the limited 100 (D3 is 130) images that the camera itself permit in the CH high speed drive mode. With the D300 you'll reach nearly 3fps shooting RAW frames until the card fills up. For the wiring and 10-pin connector to the body, I used a cheap Micnova MQ-S2 wired remote cabling.
