So I really like the PLA. It is shiny/clear and rigid and doesn't shrink/warp. You can use lower temperatures to print and it doesn't smell particularly nasty when it is melted, and it is made from sunshine and dreams. OK, so maybe not, but you can make it with starches rather than straight fro petroleum. It also seems a tad bit more tolerant of overhangs, at least spanning a gap (think melty mozzarela, versus frosting).

On the down-side, the print quality can be iffy. The extruder jams (usually because the filament gets too soft to ram itself through the nozzle). It is brittle. And probably worst, I just don't have the experience yet to know how to make it do the stuff I know ABS will just print.

This is a detail of the 3D printed epicyclic gears.

The gear set is an example of what 3D printing can do. They were being given out at a recent event i Swansea called Soapbox Science.

Unfortunately, this build didn't finish, due to a combination of me putting in too little ABS filament and the Idler Wheel in the extruder failing...

These are some of the earliest prints I tried to make with my 3d printer back in 2013. I was having troubles with the heated bed and one of the gears so things didn't come out as hoped. I eventually got the printer sorted out but kept these two as a reminder of the effort and experimentation of that project. They are framed on the wall in a place of honour in my house, serving more purpose than the prints that worked.

Now locks together but the gaps need adjusting. Also its all a bit too wide; pencils spread out to far so it needs to come in by about 10mm

Crowbar pendant in sterling silver. Made by using a 3D print to create a mold, and then doing traditional lost wax casting.
