The Bentley T-Series replaced the S3 Continental Flying Spur in 1965, and originally cost £60 less than the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, and was identical apart from front grille and badges. While nightclub owners and TV stars tarnished the Silver Shadow's image, the Bentley T-Series retained an air of aristocratic gentility. Rolls-Royce chose not to push sales of the T-Series, and when production of the Silver Shadow and T-Series saloon ended in 1980, but the Corniche version would continue until it was renamed Continental in 1984. In total 2,585 Bentley T-series and all derivatives were sold, compared to 37,971 Silver Shadows and derivatives.
Both the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, and the T-Series were offered with the option of a drophead coupe and fixedhead coupe versions which were built by Mulliner Park Ward in London and a small number by James Young. The MPW versions were renamed Corniche in 1971.
