The Bentley S2 Continental Flying Spur was launched 60 years ago in 1959 and based on the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II launched at the same time. The elegant S2 Flying Spur featured an all-new aluminium V8 petrol engine that afforded a significant boost in power, no power output was ever mentioned it is estimated to be 185bhp same as the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II which used the same engine. The increased output from the L Series 6.2-litre engine dramatically enhanced performance, while other exclusive features available on the 1959 Flying Spur included electrically-operated ride control, electric rear window demisters and press button electric windows. Other features included power steering and fully-automatic transmission. More than 1,900 S2 Flying Spur cars were built between 1959-1962. 2116 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II cars were built over the same period. The Bentley S1 was based on the Silver Cloud I, and the S3 based on the Silver Cloud III.
The latest Flying Spur was launched in 2005,with a new version due to be launched later the year.
In 1931, following Bentley Motors going into liquidation Rolls-Royce acquired the assets of the company and would later use the Bentley name on their own cars with a different grille, speedometer, steering-wheel and hubcaps. In 1998, the VW Group bought Rolls-Royce Cars, but found out they had only bought Bentley and the Crewe factory. The BMW Group acquired the rights to the Rolls-Royce marque for the sum of £40 million, and set up a new company on the 1st January 2003 Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd.
