A walk from around Geislingen. Climbed to the Schildwacht, a cross on the top of the hill, visible from anywhere in Geislingen. Then along the hill ridge as far as the hill named Ostlandkreuz, and from that hill, dropping down to Uberkingen. At Uberkingen I picked up a cycle trail that followed the course of the Fils River back to Geislingen. A light covering of snow on the hills. Footpaths narrow along steep hillsides in places (no margin for error). A great walk. Temperature around 0C.

Walk: Staufeneck from Süßen
I didn't have a detailed plan of what I'd do today. I knew that I would have to cycle to a start point, and in the end decided that I'd cycle to the Sussen railway station, and park my bike there. It is virtually just below Staufeneck. Instead of walking the most direct route up, I cut into the woods to my right, and began a gradual but long ascent of the hill to Staufeneck. I reached the summit around 13:00, just in time to seek out a bench with views over Salach on which to eat my picnic lunch. The day was hazy and it wasn't clearing, so the view, although very dramatic, wasn't at its best.
After lunch, I decided I didn't want to take the shortest and most direct route off of the hill. I could see there was potential to follow a cycle route out of the back of Staufeneck, and that I made my intention to do. First, I took a brief stroll around the castle ruins. This is now a fancy hotel and restaurant, and the ruins have had a manicure, and look quite pristine. Not very atmospheric at all.
My walk route was level from my lunch stop, following the hill ridge. This made for very easy walking. Hohenstaufen soon came into view, a hill always easy to distinguish. I could also see Wasserberg to the left, and Rechberg to the right.
I found a path dropping off the hill leading in the direction of Ottenbach. I decided to take this route. I then, once Ottenbach was reached, picked up a cycle trail that ran alongside a rather busy road. This, I'm sure, was not the best possible route. I stepped out and walked briskly. I still had some distance to cover to get me back to my bike in Sussen, involving me in walking through Salach.
I passed the old ruined factory in Salach, the Schachenmayr worsted spinning mill, which gets a mention (p.50) on the Industrielkultur im Fils, in the Publikationen (.pdf) brochure, which describes a cycle route following the industrial landmarks of the Fils Valley (Industrielkultur Filstal (Outdoor Active)).
