Accipiter nisus - we have a garden full of birds because of the feeders we put out and yet we are rarely troubled by sparrowhawks. This afternoon was an exception - in the grey and gloom of a rainy day this beautiful male turned up to watch over the garden. The other birds seemed to know it was a "recce" because they largely ignored him - the parakeets were the exception and they made a hasty retreat.
I was hoping to see Grizzly Bear in Yellowstone NP, but this was not exactly what I had in mind. I was rounding a curve in the really steep area around the Mammoth Upper Terrace, and yikes a Grizzly is standing in the middle of the road. Did I say it was steep? Rock wall on my driver's side and steep drop to the right. Where did it come from, where will it go, where is my camera?! I squeezed off a couple of shots through the windshield, then waited a few seconds as it passed right by my driver's window for this shot, moseying up the middle of the highway past the line of cars now behind me. Needless to say, I'm amazed I got anything at all - no wits about me, camera set on F10 doing wildflowers earlier... check the greenery still in its teeth...
