As this fall semester starts it's my 39th year as an academic, 29th year at Arizona State University. This year will be particularly challenging given the state of AI. There's a lot of fundamental rethinking of the role of college education. ASU has fully embraced AI, being the first university to provide ChatGPT licenses to all students. Most of my students are freaking out about AI taking their job opportunities away. It will be a rocky road.

From deepskycorner: "The planetary nebula Abell 39 was discovered in 1955 by the American astronomer George Ogden Abell on the photo plates of the «Palomar Observatory Sky Survey» (POSS).

Abell 39 shows an almost perfect spherical bubble like a picture book for a planetary nebula. The western edge is about 50% brighter than the eastern. The central star is also not exactly in the center, but offset by about 2". It seems that this is due to a slightly asymmetrical ejection of matter and not an interaction with interstellar matter. It is estimated that the central star and the ejected material each have 0.6 solar masses."

Milecastle 39 on Hadrian's Wall located northeast of Once Brewed. The excavated stonework has been consolidated, and the walls are up to 1.75 metres high. It measures 19 metres by 15.5 metres.

Excavations indicated that the milecastle may have been occupied until the late 4th century. In the 18th century a possible milking house was built in the west corner.

A rare occurrence this week with an actual picture of me (!) and Paddy & Smudge . A few days lightweight camping with a friend in the wilds of the Scottish Highlands (hence the photograph!). Cool nights in a lightweight sleeping bag but no bother for me with two hot dog water bottles :) Paddy throughly enjoyed that ... I daresay with Smudge it was a toss up between the 20km a day walkies, the red deer blarting outside the tent at night, the red deer running across the hillsides in great numbers in visible daylight and the dad cuddle ... I daresay it was probably the deer ! (in the photo you can see he was in his constant 'deer spotting mode' :)) [Oh .. and I'm not wearing a kilt .. just shorts! :) ]

This is so easy for me to shoot still life image, and so hard to shoot something else :(

I've seen this photo done expertly quite a few times but couldn't get Sprotte99's photo out of my mind this week. There are many things I would have liked to have done differently but you get what you get.

I've been able to go catch the LA&L every weekday that I have been on vacation since December 7. I probably have enough photos of em to post a LA&L pic each day for a year. Here is one of the road train as it heads North with 39 cars at Elm Place in Rush, NY, just North of Howletts, on December 12, 2018. The train is usually putting out some pretty good smoke here as it accelerates up to track speed after leaving the Avon area. Barilla Pasta is visible above the last car in the train.

Another thermometer showed - 12.8 but not a good photo.

Just wanted so say how lucky I am to have certain people in my life, including Meg, who I met here recently, and she is such a wonderful person.

Not to mention, an incredibly inspiring human being.

And she always cheers me up and puts a smile on my face. ------------> :D :D See?

I love you so so much.

This is for you.

This is my first scanography, and it just so happened that Meg did her first one today too, check it out! :D

(Coolest coincidence ever)

Meet Daniella.

I met Daniella a few weeks ago when I was strolling around my favorite area near Bethesda. She was actually just entering an apparel store with her friends when I first saw her. Although I initially waited for a bit, wasn’t sure how long she would take as the light was fading and hence, I went in and finding a quiet moment I made my request. Although she was a little hesitant, I guess because she didn’t have makeup as she confided, she agreed sportingly to be my subject.

As we stepped out onto the street, we chatted a bit. Daniella is nurse in a renowned hospital in the area and works primarily in the emergency ward. Her favorite quality about herself is her kindness which I guess goes well with her chosen profession.

Her fondest memory is related to what she loves most – travelling – as she looked back at a recent trip to Cuba. I lost some of my notes from the day so am hazy on few more details. But what struck we was her poise and confidence – for someone who claimed not to be comfortable on cameras she was an absolute pleasure to photograph. Also, as in many of my subjects, I think her eyes and the “steely” almost determined look about them was something that I think really stood out.

Thank you, Daniella, for taking the time and trusting me with the pictures. It was an absolute pleasure making your acquaintance and we are thankful for all the work you do as a nurse. Wishing you all the best for the future.
