Steam Locomotive 3801 made history today as it travelled across the Sydney Harbour Bridge for the very first time. Locomotive 3801 was designed and built in NSW in 1943 and was in preservation since its retirement in 1962, before making a triumphant return to passenger service last year. It made history as the only steam train to have travelled to all mainland Australian states and territories, and today it also made history as it travelled through the underground and across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is the first time a steam locomotive has traversed this part of the rail network since the early 1990s.
The locomotive was withdrawn from heritage service in 2007 for restoration and major boiler repairs, then was officially relaunched at Sydney's Central Station on Friday 12 March 2021.
