This was one of those rare occasions when the stranger approached ME!
I was nearing my home in the east end of Toronto after class downtown and was not expecting to have another Stranger encounter when I heard a voice from across the street. “How do you like your Olympus camera?” I turned and this man was on the other sidewalk with a friendly smile. I crossed the street and told him I love the camera and said why.
He has the same camera and is just as pleased as I am, appreciating the image quality, the generous configuration options in a beautifully built compact package. We were into camera talk and I told him a bit about my 100 Strangers project and it wasn’t until then that I realized I may have met my “bonus Stranger” for the day.
It seems odd that when I’m not in “Stranger mode” I can sometimes chat with someone and not think of the project right off. It seems silly, but fortunately I came to my senses and said “Actually, you would make a great participant for my project, are you game?” “Sure” he said.
Meet Tony who has lived just one block from me for about 30 years, and yet we’ve not met. He said he’d seen me in the neighbourhood but never had the excuse to meet me until my camera bridged the gap.
Tony suggested we do the photo in front of his house which was just a few steps away but I thought the light and background would work better on the sidewalk so we took a few steps to get away from a refuse bin from a renovation project and I simply fired away. I got out my reflector, not being sure how much difference it was going to make and Tony was happy to hold it in position for a couple more shots until I was satisfied that I had a good photo for the project.
Tony is a semi-retired Massage Therapist with a home office. I said I’ve heard that his line of work takes a toll on the body because it is so physical and that many Massage Therapists have short careers because of this. He said it’s true and that he took an early retirement and now just sees a handful of patients per week which boosts his retirement income.
He’s an avid amateur photographer as is his partner and he mentioned what a pleasure it was using his E-M1 camera on their recent trip to Chicago. “You’re kidding” I said. “I’m originally from Chicago.” We laughed at the small world aspect of our meeting.
Tony said he’d email me so I would get his address so I can send him his photo and we can see each other’s photography. My phone chimed, telling me his email had already been received.
Tony is 60 and was born and raised not far from where he lives now. We agreed it will be nice to know each other since we’re neighbours and I told him “I’m a bit of a daydreamer so if you see me on the street and I don’t say hi, please say hi to me.” He laughed and said “I never like to break people out of their daydreams.” I told him it was perfectly ok.
Thank you Tony for participating in 100 Strangers. You are now Stranger #369 in Round 4 of my project and I look forward to seeing you in the neighbourhood now that we are no longer strangers.
Additional note: I have run into Tony several times since this meeting and he is always the same friendly guy, more than happy to pause and talk photography. I've learned that he has delved much deeper into the technical features of the camera we both use and he was recently quick to advise me of a new firmware update available. Accordingly, Tony is a frequent poster on the Internet forums discussing technical features of the camera. Tony's partner is also an avid amateur photographer with some beautiful photos - mostly of landscapes. He has an upcoming exhibit at the Toronto Public Library.
