Twenty attended the Women in Wildland Fire Boot Camp in eastern Oregon, October 2018. The camp was a first for the BLM in the Pacific Northwest.
The women came from across the region and country for basic wildland fire training.
The paid opportunity was over the last two weekends of October and fulfilled several key training requirements for seasonal wildfire jobs within the federal government.
Cassandra Fleckenstein, a fire manager for the BLM in Vale, said she wanted to offer the training because some people can get lost within the larger fire schools.
“I decided to start a camp here where women can learn together in smaller groups of about 20 people,” said Fleckenstein during training.
Women slept in tents, studied and practiced mop-up duty, among many other field tasks.
“I was amazed at how much I loved fire,” said one participant.
“It was an all-around amazing experience.”

Spectacular sight! Gray whale feeding just feet from the rocky Oregon Coast shore at Yaquina Head, July 26, 2019. BLM video: Meredith Matherly
The video shows a gray whale feeding on its side, with a fin coming out of the water, near Quarry Cove on the southern side of Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.
Gray whales can be 40 to 50 feet in length and weigh up to 90,000 pounds.
Although gray whales are not as common as they once were, they can be seen every month of the year off the Oregon Coast.
They hug very close to shore to reduce their exposure to orca, or killer whales.

In 1942, tens of thousands of U.S. military draftees started arriving in southwest Oregon to train for WWII.
At the Beagle Artillery Range, just northeast of Medford, the training was as realistic as possible.
Soldiers dug a 20-foot-deep trench a half-mile long, crawled under barbed wire and attacked concrete pillboxes meant to replicate Nazi fortifications.
The ammunition was real, too, at Camp White, the hastily built military base that became Oregon’s second largest city in about six months.
Now, after decades of private cattle grazing, the artillery range and most of the bunkers rest on public land managed by the BLM.
It is on the east flank of Upper Table Rock, one of a pair of flat-topped mountains partially formed by a 44-mile-long lava flow some 7.5 million years ago. The entire area is protected as an area of critical environmental concern, and the BLM hopes to honor the Camp White legacy with trails and interpretive signs around the pillboxes.
“All of those pillboxes on all of that land — we were just part of this one huge thing that took over the world,” said George Kramer, a local historian who in 1992 wrote “Camp White: City in the Agate Desert.”

Two of three juvenile peregrine falcons take a cliffside break at Yaquina Head just days after taking first flight, June 21, 2020. BLM video: Meredith Matherly
The trio of falcon chicks fledged last week after probably about a month and a half of feeding and growing from their cliffside nest above the Oregon Coast.
The nest was first spotted in late April but eggs or chicks could not be visibly verified until the first week of June.
As they waited for meals to arrive from their parents, the siblings quickly went from fluffy, white chicks to juvenile-looking falcons with flying feathers.
This video was captured yesterday during a flying break, as the juveniles are already showing off their “pretty impressive” aerial skills above Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, said Meredith Matherly, the education coordinator for the BLM park.
“One was seen chasing away a blue heron out of the cliff area this morning!” wrote Matherly yesterday.
Peregrine falcons are fierce raptors and one of the fastest birds in the world, able to reach 200 miles per hour while diving for prey, which is most commonly smaller birds, according to the National Audubon Society.
Chicks wait at a high-up, concealed nest for meals to arrive, and usually fledge within the first 45 days, approximately.
There were three peregrine falcon chicks last year, too, at Yaquina Head, and they fledged June 15.

A 1-year-old seal pup rests with adults on the rocks at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area on the Oregon Coast, April 13, 2020. BLM video: Meredith Matherly
Most pups are born in May and the colony of about 100 Pacific harbor seals produces about 15 pups every year
The resident seals live on the rocky outcroppings and cove attached to Cobble Beach, and visitors can often see them either laying about or with heads peeking out of the ocean.
The marine mammals can leave their pups on the beach while they hunt for food. When this happens, it is important to leave the animals alone and keep a distance. It is also illegal to harm, touch, feed or harass the seals under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
This video, captured in mid-April with a spotting scope and smartphone camera from various Yaquina Head observation decks, shows a 1-year-old seal curious about its surroundings while nearby adults bask in the sun.

Citizen scientists identify 47 different dragonflies and damselflies in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Aug. 3, 2019.
Several of the insects discovered during the BioBlitz event last weekend were previously unknown to live in the southwest Oregon national monument.
Dragonflies and damselflies are carnivorous insects in the odonata family, an ancient classification with fossil records going back 325 million years.
Scientists think as many as 60 different species of dragonflies and damselflies live within the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, an area specifically protected for its tremendous biodiversity.
Previous BioBlitz events, coordinated with the local friends group for the monument, have focused on butterflies, fungi, reptiles and amphibians, and birds.
