I purchased a proper bicycle handlebar mount. So much better than having to hold the improvised mount in the previous photo. I'm still working through some technology issues to upload a proper video where you can pan around as it goes.

The BLM frequently checks the exterior of Oregon’s tallest lighthouse, built in the early 1870s, to make sure the cast iron brackets are holding up to the harsh coastal conditions.

Normally, employees or contractors are forced to use binoculars for their inspections, or dangle over the edge of the 93-foot-tall lighthouse using ropes.

“We don’t have a ladder to get that high,” said Matthew Betenson, manager of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

This was the first time the agency used an aerial drone for the inspection. The flight was first thing in the morning on Sunday and only possible this time of year when it wouldn’t affect wildlife like seabirds or seals.

Use of drones, or even kites, by the public at Yaquina Head is prohibited.

This was also the first time inspectors were able to inspect the roof.

Overall, everyone was happy they didn’t see any cracking or excessive rusting on the iconic Oregon Coast lighthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“We have a duty to protect it,” said Betenson.

A young sea lion makes its way back to the ocean after getting stuck on a pedestrian platform at Quarry Cove, part of Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, March 8, 2020.

BLM photo: Meredith Matherly

A young sea lion ventured to a pubic viewing platform Sunday at Yaquina Head before being gently ushered back towards the ocean.

Of all the wildlife viewable at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, sea lions are a rarity and more commonly seen near the Newport bayfront, according to Meredith Matherly, a BLM staffer who captured video and helped with the operation.

“We’ve never seen one walk up the ramp and be all the way up there,” said Matherly, referring to the pedestrian access area for Quarry Cove.

The normal strategy for marine mammal interaction at Yaquina Head is to put up clear signs and do nothing, said Matherly.

“We usually just leave them alone, see what they do,” she said.

Unfortunately on Sunday, some visitors did not heed the signs and ventured very close to the sea lion.

Due to the human interaction and receding tide, Yaquina Head staffers decided to call the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network for help.

A stranding coordinator with the network, part of Oregon State University’s Marine Mammal Institute, responded and was able to coax the nearly 1-year-old sea lion back to the beach.

From there, onlookers could watch as it made its way back to the water.

Marine mammals are protected by federal law and it is illegal to disturb, handle or feed them.

Sea lions are capable of biting and certainly could harm a person, said Matherly. Another concern is that the wild animals become too accustomed to people and begin frequenting human-populated areas more often.

With seal pup season approaching in May for the Oregon Coast, it is a good time to remind everyone to steer clear of all marine mammals.

Seal mothers, in particular, often leave their pups unattended on beaches while foraging. If the seal mothers see humans near the pups, they may abandon them.

To report an injured, stranded or dead marine mammal on the Oregon Coast, call the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network: 541-270-6830.

To file a report for the entire West Coast, call the West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network: 1-866-767-6114.

BLM story by Lisa Clark

BLM photos by Jeff Kitchens: Crewmember Rob Fore braves the winter weather to complete a pile burning project and prevent summer wildfires in the Prineville District.

At the BLM, the prevention of summer wildfires is a year-round effort! ❄🔥

This week, fuel crews from our Prineville District are taking advantage of the recent snow to burn debris piles southwest of Cline Buttes near Redmond, Oregon.

Pile burning helps to reduce overall fire intensity and allow firefighters better and safer access in the event of a summer wildfire.

To get the job done, crews first thin an area of juniper and remove any usable material for products like firewood or chips. Then, they pile the remaining branches and woody debris for burning.

This usually occurs in the winter, when snow helps keep the fire from creeping outside the pile. Pile burning is one of the last steps taken in a hazardous fuel reduction project.

Our crews currently have about 335 acres of piles to burn, but they hope to have the project done in only a few days!

The common murre colony returns to Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, one of the most famous seabird viewing spots on the Oregon Coast, Feb. 1, 2019. BLM video: Meredith Matherly

Colony Rock and Seal Rock, among others, are some of the most well-known spots on the Oregon Coast to see thousands of seabirds. The common murre colony at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area can number as high as 60,000.

When visiting the popular Yaquina Head, just north of Newport, it is always recommended to stop at the visitor's center to get the latest information about seabird nesting sites, tide pool discovery times and whale-watching tips!

The murres were first seen on Friday, Feb. 1, at Yaquina Head.

In 2018, they arrived Feb. 3.

The spotting scope was purchased last month and is mobile so BLM staff can move it to good areas for viewing birds, seals and even whales!

In front of the Yaquina Head interpretive center, visitors can take a peek at the peregrine falcons that nest in the rocks nearby.

BLM rangers are always staffing the scopes to help people use them and interpret what they are seeing.

“We set up these scopes on an almost daily basis to view the wildlife in the park and provide a way for families to get extremely up close and personal,” said Meredith Matherly, BLM education program coordinator at Yaquina Head.

Two of three juvenile peregrine falcons take a cliffside break at Yaquina Head just days after taking first flight, June 21, 2020. BLM video: Meredith Matherly

The trio of falcon chicks fledged last week after probably about a month and a half of feeding and growing from their cliffside nest above the Oregon Coast.

The nest was first spotted in late April but eggs or chicks could not be visibly verified until the first week of June.

As they waited for meals to arrive from their parents, the siblings quickly went from fluffy, white chicks to juvenile-looking falcons with flying feathers.

This video was captured yesterday during a flying break, as the juveniles are already showing off their “pretty impressive” aerial skills above Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, said Meredith Matherly, the education coordinator for the BLM park.

“One was seen chasing away a blue heron out of the cliff area this morning!” wrote Matherly yesterday.

Peregrine falcons are fierce raptors and one of the fastest birds in the world, able to reach 200 miles per hour while diving for prey, which is most commonly smaller birds, according to the National Audubon Society.

Chicks wait at a high-up, concealed nest for meals to arrive, and usually fledge within the first 45 days, approximately.

There were three peregrine falcon chicks last year, too, at Yaquina Head, and they fledged June 15.
