Hermes Communications Satellite
(engineering test model)
Manufacturer: SPAR Aerospace Products Ltd.
Toronto, Ontario
ca. 1976
Source: Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC)
Artifact no.: 1982.0655
Success of the Alouette / ISIS program led to other Canadian firsts, including the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS-Hermes) and the engineering test model shown here.
Built by the Communications Research Centre Canada, Hermes became the world's first direct-to-home TV broadcast satellite when it was launched in 1976.
Transmitting at high power is what made reception of TV broadcasts using small low cost earth stations possible, making direct-to-home TV broadcasts available for the first time to users at home.
The Hermes program pioneered the use of high frequency Ku band technology for which the Communications Research Centre Canada received an EMMY AWARD in 1987.

No. d’artefact 1982.0655
