La destruction de la cité antique de Palmyre, prise par les jihadistes de l'Etat islamique, serait "une énorme perte pour l'humanité", a déclaré jeudi la directrice de l'Unesco Irina Bokova dans une vidéo mise en ligne par l'organisation internationale.
"Palmyre est le site d'un extraordinaire héritage mondial dans le désert, et toute destruction à Palmyre serait non seulement un crime de guerre, mais aussi une énorme perte pour l'humanité", a souligné Irina Bokova, qui a réitéré son appel au Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU à se saisir du sujet.
"Nous avons besoin que le Conseil de sécurité, que tous les leaders politiques, que les chefs religieux lancent un appel pour prévenir ces destructions", a-t-elle ajouté.
"En fin de compte, c'est le berceau de la civilisation humaine" qui "appartient à l'humanité toute entière", a souligné la directrice de l'Unesco. "Ce que Palmyre nous dit, c'est que toutes les cultures s'influencent les unes les autres, toutes les cultures s'enrichissent mutuellement".
L'organisation extrémiste Etat islamique (EI) s'est emparée jeudi de la totalité de la ville antique de Palmyre dans le désert syrien, suscitant des craintes de voir les trésors archéologiques de la cité détruits par les jihadistes.
En Irak, le groupe avait détruit plusieurs statues et objets de valeurs dans des cités antiques.
Située à 210 km au nord-est de Damas, la "perle du désert", inscrite par l'Unesco au patrimoine mondial de l'humanité, est une oasis qui fut un point de passage des caravanes entre le Golfe et la Méditerranée et un carrefour des civilisations antiques.

Lavandula (common name lavender) is a genus of 47 known species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Old World and is found from Cape Verde and the Canary Islands, Europe across to northern and eastern Africa, the Mediterranean, southwest Asia to southeast India. Many species are cultivated extensively in temperate climates as ornamental plants for garden and landscape use, for use as culinary herbs, and also commercially for the extraction of essential oils. The most widely cultivated species is often referred to as lavender, and there is a colour named for the shade of the flowers of this species. 34466

Buses of Somerset operate six former Arriva London Enviro400s across the network, which are branded 'Green' in light of their Euro6 upgrades - not that this appears on the bus. 34466 is numbered in the old Olympian sequence as it passes around the war memorial column on Taunton's Parade.

Former Arriva London T87 is one of 7 acquired by First for use on the Taunton-Burnham corridor, then based out of Bridgwater depot. Since its closure they are allocated within a mixed pool of the slightly older examples. These ones have notably inferior seats from their London days.
Former Arriva London 34467 stands on the forecourt of Taunton Garage showing off its single door conversion. Seven of these 34466-72 (ex London T87-93 in a neat order) were acquired by First to replace Tridents here, however 34471 has already succumbed to accident damage. 23.12.23.

Walking along the Nev Cole Way alongside the Humber Estuary, looking at the former Barrow Tileries. Near to Barrow Haven in North Lincolnshire.
Named after the founder of The Wanderlust Rambling Club, The Nev Cole Way starts from Burton-upon-Strather in the far north of Lincolnshire. Following the Jurassic scarp overlooking the River Trent, it continues east along the south bank of the Humber.
After skirting the highly industrial towns of North / South Killingholme, Immingham and Grimsby, it turns inland into the gently sloping Lincolnshire Wolds and finishes in Nettleton, where it provides a link with The Viking Way.
