This has to be one of the most beautiful hummingbirds but sadly scarce in Colombia. We only saw 3 in total. It was also, for me, one of the most difficult to photograph. Unlike other hummingbirds this one is not attracted to feeders and is extremely skittish. Any attempt to move towards it resulted in it flying away. It really was, pick your spot in the field, sit tight and hope.

In loving memory of my beautiful mother, who passed on March 20th, cancer took her from me.

I could not be by her side one last time due to the pandemic, and to this day , that makes my heart hurt.

This is a way to pay tribute to a beautiful person that only gave me love.

The Grand Palais is one of the most emblematic Parisian monuments. Built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, it is recognizable by its large glass dome flanked by the French flag. An architectural masterpiece combining stone, steel and glass, it has been listed as a historical monument since November 2000. It is made up of 3 major sites: the Nave, the National Galleries and the Discovery Palace. The 240-meter-long Nave transom hosts major national and international events in a wide variety of fields (horse riding, contemporary art, fun fair, etc.). The National Galleries organize large-scale exhibitions on artists who have marked the history of art (Picasso, Hopper, Renoir, etc.). The Palais de la Découverte is a museum and cultural center dedicated to science, where children learn while having fun through the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. An essential 3 in 1 site, a stone's throw from the Champs-Élysées.

Inaugurated on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and listed as a historical monument, the Alexandre III bridge is one of the most emblematic of the capital, thanks to its architecture and its geographical location. Its four ends are flanked by monumental pylons 17 meters high, adorned at their top with gilded bronze pegasus. They represent the Fame of Arts, Sciences, Commerce and Industry. The Alexandre III bridge connects Les Invalides on one side and the Grand and Petit Palais on the other. The panoramic view of these buildings, the Eiffel Tower and the Seine make it a very popular place to walk, day and night.

Shine a light on me...

Corythoichthys schultzi can reach a length up to 16 cm (6.3 in) in males. The body is cylindrical and very elongated. These pipefishes have a cryptic coloration making the difficult to be detected by both prey and predators. The basic color of the body is whitish, with small black, brown and reddish dashes and yellowish rings. The eyes are protruding and the snout is long, slightly compressed and thinner than the body. The caudal fin is present but quite small. Adults may form small aggregation. Ovoviviparous, the male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail. In this pouch they also carry the developing young pipefishes. (Wikipedia) Nuweiba, Gulf of Aqaba, Egypt

I was out watching the sunset and a van pulled in near me.

About 8 people got out, and this man quickly caught my eye..

As I watched him find his spot and get ready. I noticed He had a camera around his neck, a smaller one in his pocket, and also his cell phone camera. He's holding all 3 in this photo.

The best part about this photo is, I never noticed the stick in the ground until I got home and looked on the computer.. It must have been near the road between us.

People make all kinds of things with sticks and logs out there. They also stack rocks everywhere.

Tonight I present you a little bird that moves 2 to 3 times more than our Brown Creepers. Without being so obvious in is environment and blending in perfectly, measuring 11cm / 4.5 inch not really bigger than a hummingbird. I had seen it last year but not really made a good captured to present it as a Lifer ... I think I had the chance to capture both species the same evening and in the Golden Hours ... Here they are.

Physocarpus capitatus, commonly called Pacific ninebark or tall ninebark, is a species of Physocarpus native to western North America from southern Alaska east to Montana and Utah, and south to southern California.

It is a dense deciduous shrub growing to 1–2.5 metres (3 ft 3 in–8 ft 2 in) tall. The name comes from the appearance of the bark, which is flaky, peeling away in many layers. The shrub has distinctive maple-like lobed leaves 3–14 centimetres (1.2–5.5 in) long and broad, and clusters of small white flowers with five petals and numerous red-tipped stamens. The unique fruit is an inflated glossy red pod which turns dry and brown and then splits open to release seeds.

It is often found in wetlands, but also forms thickets along rivers and in moist forest habitats. While it grows most robustly in wet environments, it is drought-tolerant to a degree and is a popular California garden plant.

History

The site was previously occupied by a Palaeo-Christian and Visigothic cathedral, which later, after the Islamic conquest of Spain, was rebuilt in 832 to be used as a mosque. In 1149, after the city's conquest by the Christian Ramon Berenguer IV of Barcelona and Ermengol VI of Urgell (1149), the structure was reconsecrated as "Santa Maria Antiqua", and entrusted to canons regular.

In 1193, however, the cathedral chapter ordered the construction of a new edifice, following the contemporary Romanesque architectural canons, to master Pere de Coma. The first stone was laid in 1203 by King Peter II of Aragon and count Ermengol VII of Urgell. Construction continued throughout the reign of James I of Aragon. It was consecrated to the Virgin Mary on 31 October 1278. The cloisters not were completed until the 14th century. The bell tower was begun in 14th century and finished in 1431.[2] The portal Porta dels Apòstols begun in the 14th and completed in 15th century.[3]

In 1707, the city was conquered by the troops of Philip V: the king ordered the destruction of the cathedral because it has taken a prominent part in the city's defense. Nevertheless, the order was never executed, and the cathedral was converted into barracks. The building was declared a national monument in 1918, and restoration works were started in 1950.

East Africa

The common duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia), also known as the gray duiker or bush duiker, is a small antelope and the only member of the genus Sylvicapra.

This species is found everywhere in Africa south of the Sahara, excluding the Horn of Africa and the rainforests of the central and western parts of the continent. Generally, they are found in habitats with sufficient vegetation cover to allow them to hide—savannah and hilly areas, including the fringes of human settlements.

Colouration of this species varies widely over its vast geographic range. There are 14 subspecies described, ranging from chestnut in forested areas of Angola to grizzled gray in northern savannas and light brown shades in arid regions.

It grows to about 50 cm (20 in) in height and generally weighs 12 to 25 kg (26 to 55 lb); females are generally larger and heavier than the males. Only the male has horns and these can grow to 11 cm (4.3 in) long.

The common duiker has a wide diet; beyond browsing for leaves, flowers, fruits and tubers, they will also eat insects, frogs, small birds and mammals, and even carrion. As long as they have vegetation to eat (from which they get some water), they can go without drinking for very long periods.

They are active both day and night, but become more nocturnal near human settlements, presumably due to the presence of feral dogs and humans.

Males are territorial and smear gland secretions on rocks and branches to mark their territories; their preferred resting places are generally on elevated ground, where they can observe their territory. Females, by contrast, prefer deeper cover. The overall success of this species stems from its ability to inhabit a wide variety of habitats, as well as from its adaptable, generalist diet. – Wikipedia

a very peculiar wader / shorebird, not only because of its double name but more so because of its behavior.

From Wikipedia:

"The red phalarope or grey phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius) is a small wader. This phalarope breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. It is migratory, and, unusually for a wader, migrates mainly on oceanic routes, wintering at sea on tropical oceans.

The typical avian sex roles are reversed in the three phalarope species. Females are larger and more brightly coloured than males. The females pursue males, compete for nesting territory, and will aggressively defend their nests and chosen mates. Once the females lay their olive-brown eggs, they begin their southward migration, leaving the males to incubate the eggs and care for the young. Three to six eggs are laid in a ground nest near water. Incubation lasts 18 or 19 days. The young mainly feed themselves and are able to fly within 18 days of birth.

The red phalarope is about 21 cm (8.3 in) in length, with lobed toes and a straight bill, somewhat thicker than that of red-necked phalarope. The breeding female is predominantly dark brown and black above, with red underparts and white cheek patches. The bill is yellow, tipped black. The breeding male is a duller version of the female. Young birds are light grey and brown above, with buff underparts and a dark patch through the eye. In winter, the plumage is essentially grey above and white below, but the black eyepatch is always present. The bill is black in winter.

When feeding, a red phalarope will often swim in a small, rapid circle, forming a small whirlpool. This behaviour is thought to aid feeding by raising food from the bottom of shallow water. The bird will reach into the outskirts of the vortex with its bill, plucking small insects or crustaceans caught up therein. They sometimes fly up to catch insects in flight. On the open ocean, they are found in areas where converging ocean currents produce upwellings and are often found near groups of whales. Outside of the nesting season they often travel in flocks."

3 birds of prey ........The black kite (Milvus migrans)

Same sunrise on New Year's Day. Different point of view and tonemapped. I just remember how cold it was.

#3 in Explore! Thank you all!

Romalea guttata goes through several stages, like all insects. When in the nymph stage, it is smaller than in the adult stage, wingless and completely black with one or more yellow, orange or red stripes. In the adult stage, they reach 2.5–3 in (64–76 mm), grow wings half the length of their body and become either a dull yellow often characterized by black spots and markings, a bright orange with black markings, or entirely black (as in the nymph stage) with yellow or red striping. In the black adult color phase, the grasshopper is widely known by the name "diablo" or "black diablo". In Louisiana, they are known as the Devil's horse or cheval-diable. The insect is also colloquially known as a "graveyard grasshopper". In Mississippi they are known as "Giant Locust".[4]
