Lothersdale Past and Present … in Pictures – Picture no. 2: Stone Gappe is an iconic Grade II listed mansion on the outskirts of the village – in fact, I believe it actually falls just within the Glusburn parish boundary. It was built in 1725 for a William Bawdwen, on the site of an earlier house, but later became the summer retreat for a Skipton mill-owner, John Benson Sidgwick and his family. In 1839 Charlotte Bronte came to the house to become governess to the Sidgwick children – she was unhappy with the position and within a few weeks returned to Haworth parsonage. It is believed, though, that she used Stone Gappe as the model for Gateshead Hall in her book “Jane Eyre”. The house was later bought by Sir John Horsfall, owner of Hayfield Mill in Glusburn – not sure that he ever actually lived there but instead he rented it out to various tenants including a Dr. Black whose wife was sister of the composer Frederick Delius who was a regular visitor. A later tenant in the 1920s was the rector of Lothersdale, the Rev. Aldous, who sub-let the house to be used as a youth camp centre and in 1931 the house became the Youth Hostel Association’s first hostel opened in the West Riding of Yorkshire – unfortunately it wasn’t the most popular of locations and it closed in July 1935 (the nearby Pennine Way didn’t open until 1965). Now a private residence again, the house and gardens look stunning from the outside – no doubt the interior is equally impressive.
Week 2 of 50 Weeks Project
Strobist: For this shot I used two small strobes, both at their widest settings and 1/4th power. Main light went through umbrella around 50cm over the camera. Second light came from back left to create the highlight and the flare.
